  • The purpose of this study is to report the effect of korean medicine treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in adults. A patient diagnosed with DDH had been treated with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, cupping therapy and chuna manual therapy for 8 weeks. The patient was evaluated by using range of motion (ROM) of hip joint, muscle strength of lower extremity, leg length, numeric rating scale (NRS) and Korean version of hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (K-HOOS). After the treatment, the patient had an improvement in the symptoms, pain, and activities of daily living of K-HOOS, especially the quality of life. In addition, NRS decreased from 7 to 4 points, and ROM and muscle strength also improved. The results of this study show that korean medicine treatment is effective and meaningful as one of the conservative treatment for DDH in adults.

  • In this Case Report, a patient with Buerger's disease who had a leg amputation below his lower right knee and a vascular bypass of right leg, developed a wound caused by his prosthetic leg and subjective discomfort. The patient received skin flap surgery but the wound did not heal properly. He was admitted to the Korean Medicine Hospital where his wound, right leg coldness, and phantom pain were treated with combined Korean medicine. The patient was hospitalized again where he underwent micro-drilling surgery. The patient was re-admitted to the Korean Medicine Hospital where he received combined Korean medicine treatment (CKMT) and carbon arc light treatment (CALT) for his wound, leg coldness, stiffness, and hypoplasia. The temperature of his right leg increased, the numeric rating scale score for assessing pain fell from 5 to 1.5, and subjective discomfort was reduced (< 20%) suggesting this may be an effective treatment.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this review is to investigate the trends of traditional korean medicine treatments on frozen shoulder. Methods : We investigated the studies on traditional korean medicine treatments for frozen shoulder via searching 6 Korean web databases. As a result, 32 research papers were found to be analyzed according to their published year, the titles of journals, published institution, the types of study, the number of cases, the types of treatments, the instruments for assessment and ethical approvals. Results : 32 papers were published since 1989. The studies on traditional korean medicine treatments about frozen shoulder were mainly published in The journal of korean acupuncture & moxibustion medicine. 10 case series, 7 reviews, 6 non-randomized controlled trials, 5 randomized controlled trials and 4 case reports had been under research. In most of the research, the number of the cases were not enough. In 15 cases of the studies, various traditional korean medicine treatments were used to treat the symptoms. In 8 cases of the studies, one method was used to treat the symptoms. Range of motion(ROM) and visual analogue scale(VAS) were used as primary assessments. Among the 25 clinical studies, 5 of them were accepted by institutional review board(IRB). Conclusion : In this study, we analyzed the trends of traditional korean medicine treatments on frozen shoulder. Reviewing the domestic trends of studies on traditional korean medicine treatments for frozen shoulder and examining the strong and weak points of those treatments are essential for the future studies.

Methods A thoroughly reviewed questionnaire was distributed by e-mail to 21,719 Korean Medicine doctors between March 26 and April 30, 2021. All raw data were arranged and analyzed systematically. Results The response rate among the doctors was 4%. Of the respondents, 82.1% responded that it is necessary to develop the CTS Korean Medicine CPG. We also obtained data related to the specific diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis management methods used at various treatment sites for patients with CTS. Conclusions This online survey will be helpful in developing the CTS CPG, which will contribute to the standardization of guidelines and improvements in the reliability of Korean Medicine. Our findings will provide valuable data and resources for future clinical studies on CTS.

  • This study presents a case of facial nerve injury that occurred after parotidectomy for a benign tumor of the parotid gland that improved with integrated Korean medicine (IKM). On June 24, 2023, the patient presented with facial nerve injury based on a facial nerve conduction study after parotidectomy, with a score of five on Yanagihara's unweighted grading system (Y-system) and a grade of five on the House-Brackmann facial grading scale (H-B scale). During the 15 days of admission, IKM treatments, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, herbal steam therapy, physiotherapy, herbal medicine, and thread embedding acupuncture treatment, were performed. After treatment, the strength of the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and masticatory muscles improved, with a Y-system score of 17 and an H-B scale of III. In conclusion, the findings of this study confirm the applicability and effectiveness of IKM in the treatment of facial paralysis following parotidectomy.
