This study was carried out to analyze the social interests and demands in health-concerned editorials and to help formulate the public opinions in proper ways. The analysis covered the editorials of five leading news papers such as Chosun Ilbo, Han Kook Ilbo. Han Kyu Re, Joongang Ilbo, Donga Ilbo for the past three years from. June 1, 1987 to May 31, 1990. The major findings are as follows. 1. The total number of health-concerned editorials in the five daily newspapers for the period was 414. occupying $4.6\%$, of the total editorials. 2. The main concerned areas of editorial topics was environmental pollution, which was followed by medical affairs, environmental sanitation, health behavior, social-welfare, demography and so on. 3. The $42.5\%$ of the total number of editorials were appeared in dealing with the outbreak of relevant events in social matters. The distribution of motives to dealing the editorials shows no significant difference by news papers and topics. 4. The $66.4\%$ of the total editorials were addressed toward the government policies. Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly transforming medical writing and publishing. This review article focuses on experimental evidence to provide a comprehensive overview of the current applications, challenges, and future implications of LLMs in various stages of academic research and publishing process. Global surveys reveal a high prevalence of LLM usage in scientific writing, with both potential benefits and challenges associated with its adoption. LLMs have been successfully applied in literature search, research design, writing assistance, quality assessment, citation generation, and data analysis. LLMs have also been used in peer review and publication processes, including manuscript screening, generating review comments, and identifying potential biases. To ensure the integrity and quality of scholarly work in the era of LLM-assisted research, responsible artificial intelligence (AI) use is crucial. Researchers should prioritize verifying the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain transparency in the use of LLMs, and develop collaborative human-AI workflows. Reviewers should focus on higher-order reviewing skills and be aware of the potential use of LLMs in manuscripts. Editorial offices should develop clear policies and guidelines on AI use and foster open dialogue within the academic community. Future directions include addressing the limitations and biases of current LLMs, exploring innovative applications, and continuously updating policies and practices in response to technological advancements. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders are necessary to harness the transformative potential of LLMs while maintaining the integrity of medical writing and publishing.
Experimental results obtained from research using only one sex are sometimes extrapolated to both sexes without thorough justification. However, this might cause enormous economic loss and unintended fatalities. Between years 1997 and 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration suspended ten prescription drugs producing severe adverse effects on the market. Eight of the ten drugs caused greater health risks in women. Serious male biases in basic, preclinical, and clinical research were the main reason for the problem. This mini-review will describe why and how funding organizations such as the European Commission, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the US National Institutes of Health have tried to influence researchers to integrate sex/gender not only in clinical research, but also in basic and preclinical research. Editorial policies of prominent journals for sex-specific reporting will also be introduced, and some considerations in integrating sex as a biological variable will be pointed out. To produce precise and reproducible results applicable for both men and women, sex should be considered as an important biological variable from basic and preclinical research.
The ethical environment in academic research is rapidly changing at a global level. Further, social expectations and public interest toward research ethics are also escalating in Korea. Understanding and applying ethical issues in academic research has become increasingly important. To conform to such changes in the ethical environment, the official journal of the Korean Academy of Health Policy and Management has been consistently establishing and modifying rules and principles regarding research ethics. For instance, we amended the submission guidelines to further address the policies for gendered innovations. For this editorial of the current issue, we would like to organize and share several ethical concerns, which recently gained considerable attention. We hope this review provides scholars with practical guidelines to comprehend and incorporate critical ethical issues into academic research.
To determine the problems with the apartment management system in Korea and to make recommendations for its development, a review and content analysis of the 2010 and 2011 editorials of two newspapers, The APT News and The Korea Apartment News, was conducted. Apartment management is divided into four areas: maintenance management, operations management, community management, and synthetic management. More than 50 percent of the editorials were concerned with the problems of operations management. There were two management subjects: the apartment manager and the apartment management company. Interest in the apartment management system varied between apartment managers and apartment management companies, so more positive policies and more interest are needed for apartment management.
Authors, editors and reviewers, publishers, and subscribers all play their role in scientific journals. These 5 stakeholders are essential to journals. In this paper, firstly, I briefly summarize the role of each journal stakeholder and their respective goals. Secondly, the status of each participant in the Archives of Plastic Surgery is described. Finally, I propose an appropriate role and plan for each of them. Specific roles and responsibilities include the following: subscribers should welcome and submit the critiques of published papers in letters to the editor. Publishers should trust editors and provide them with adequate financial support for ongoing quality improvement of the journal. The editor-in-chief should be given a sufficient period of time-several years-to build up journal quality and train the incoming editor. The editors, including section editors, are also responsible for increasing the author pool. One editor might be designated a 'devil's referee', that is, a kind of devil's advocate with the responsibility of examining the originality of the manuscript, taking a skeptical view of the manuscript, and looking for holes in the methods and results of reported experiments. Authors' responsibilities include submitting manuscripts with scientific integrity and being ready to take responsibility for their articles even long after publication. Finally, reviewers' responsibilities include identifying similar articles not cited. Reviewers are also welcome to write a discussion on the article they review.
During the Obama administration, America made a shift in its foreign policies to re-focus on Asia. The strategy, known as 'Pivot to Asia', was used to contain a rising China. In this editorial note, I appropriate the geopolitical term to call for a scholarly refocus on Asia (and the broader Asia Pacific region). JCEA started as an area journal. While it has become more technology-focused and less geographically-bounded in its coverage of topics, the journal recognizes the centrality of the region's political economy and technological forces in setting (and upsetting) global norms and rules. The Asia Pacific contains the world's freest economies as well as the most oppressive regimes. It breeds both technology giants and laggards. As new geopolitical tensions loom, it is where the digital iron curtain is drawn, and where the vice and virtue of innovations debated. Social scientists in the English world, who lend extensively on European and American cases, can benefit from studying the Asia Pacific by testing whether and how local experience conforms to or confronts with universal theories. Very likely, western-centric norms and models become morphed and entangled in the grounded local particularity, reflecting many shades of this diverse place. In my arguments below, I highlight the Asia Pacific as a site of contradiction, as well as a site of contention and negotiation. My emphasis is that regional particularity holds the key to answer concurrent debates in the West concerning governance and accountability in the digital age.
Notice: This article has been retracted as a result of the review (on May 14, 2024) by the Research Ethics Committee of the Korean Society of Remote Sensing, which confirmed research misconduct (plagiarism).
The Korean Journal of Remote Sensing (KJRS) Editorial Office received a report alleging plagiarism in a paper published in KJRS authored by Zong and Kohani (2021). Following a thorough investigation by our Research Ethics Committee, we found significant similarities between the original paper (Lee and Mortari, 2017) and the paper (Zong and Kohani, 2021) published in KJRS. The scope of the plagiarism included a number of identical figures, tables, and equations, as well as textual content. As a result, the Research Ethics Committee of the Korean Society of Remote Sensing has decided to retract the paper (Zong and Kohani. 2021) for deliberately using the ideas, research content, and results of others without proper approval or citation. To preserve academic integrity, we take responsibility for enforcing ethical policies and proceeding with the follow-up actions: 1. Disclosure and preservation of the facts and reasons for the retraction of the plagiarized paper, 2. Prohibition of submissions for the next three years for the authors of the plagiarized paper, 3. Notification to the authors’ affiliated institution of the retraction of the plagiarized paper. We deeply regret to report for retraction of the article and apologize to the readers of KJRS and to the authors of the original work for any inconvenience caused.
