A low pressure DC plasma jet has been used to obtain diamond films from a mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ with high deposition rate (>1$\mu\textrm{m}$/min). The effects of the deposition conditions such as torch geometry, substrate temperature, gas mixing ratio, chamber pressure, axial magnetic field on the diamond film properties such as morphology, purity, uniformity of the film and deposition rate, etc. have been examined with the aid of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy. Both the growth rate and particle size increased rapidly for low methane concentrations but saturated and the morphology changed from octahedral to cubic structure when the concentration exceeded 1.0 %. Higher growth rates (>1.5${\mu}m$/min) can be obtained by applying an axial magnetic field to the DC plasma jet. Diamond obtained from the magnetized plasma jet also shows a sharp peak at 1332.5$cm^{-1}$ in the Raman Spectra and this result implies that higher growth rate with a good quality diamond films can he obtained by applying an external magnetic field to the plasma jet.
An experimental study on heat transfer and flow characteristics of a circular impinging jet on a flat plate has been carried out. Of particular interests are the effects of nozzle wall thickness and nozzle exit pressure. Experimental apparatus has been designed to view heating plate coated by TLC from the opposite side of the nozzle in order to measure heat transfer rates for cases of very small nozzle to plate spacings. A visualization study of jet flows has also been performed. As the nozzle wall thickness increases at small nozzle to plate spacings, the effect of mixing is inhibited due to the confinement caused by the finite nozzle wall, consequently, heat transfer rates have been decreased. At small nozzle to plate spacings, heat transfer rates and nozzle exit pressures are increased together, therefore, enhancement of heat transfer at small nozzle to plate spacings should be considered in conjunction with the need of more fan power to generate the same Reynolds numbers.
An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, we present a 2-D edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle, using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). We use a modified version of the lattice BGK compressible fluid model, adding an additional term and allowing for longer time increments, compared to a conventional FDLBM, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates system. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}$ = 23. At a stand-off distance, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave, with real frequency, is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and propagates towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations, resulting from periodical oscillations of a jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Its interaction with the wedge produces an non-rotational feedback field, which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow, producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.
This paper concentrates on the development of a computational design program to determine nozzle size in water jet, combing the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. To achieve the above objective, a two-dimensional model was developed for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard ${k}-\varepsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermo fluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.
Space and time resolved discharge images from an atmospheric pressure non-thermal Ar plasma jet have been observed by a ICCD camera to investigate the electron temperatures. Plasma jet device consisting of a syringe electrode inserted into a glass tube has been introduced. A high voltage is applied to the syringe electrode. The syringe needle has an outer diameter of 1.8 mm, an inner diameter of 1.3 mm, and a total length of 39.0 mm. The needle is inserted into a glass tube of outer diameter 2.4 mm and inner diameter 2.0 mm, and a total length of 80.0 mm. The Ar plasma propagation speed on the cathode has been shown to be about 2.1 km/s at input discharge voltage of 3.6 kV, discharge current of 19.9 mA and driving frequency of about 45 kHz. Particularly, the electron temperature in plasma jet were found to be about 1.8 eV at input discharge voltage of 3.6 kV and driving frequency of 45 kHz, respectively.
An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper we present a two-dimensional edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. We use a new lattice BGK compressible fluid model that has an additional term and allow larger time increment comparing a conventional FDLB model, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}=23^{\circ}$ . At a stand-off distance ${\omega}$ , the edge is inserted along the centreline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency f is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and to propagate towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations result from periodically oscillation of jet around the edge. That pressure fluctuations propagate with the sound speed. Its interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.
The objective of the present study is to investigate experimentally the mean flow characteristics of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer over a rotating disk with an impinging jet at the center of the disk, which may be regarded as one of the simplest models for the flow in turbomachinery. A relatively strong radial outflow (crossflow) generated from the impinging jet is added to the radial outflow (crossflow) induced by the centrifugal force in order to create the three-dimensional boundary layer. A new calibration technique has been introduced to determine the velocity direction and magnitude using an I-wire probe, where the uncertainties are ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}$ and ${\pm}0.35\;m/s$, respectively, in the laminar boundary layer region, compared with the known exact solutions. The flow in the tangential direction is of similar type to that associated with a favorable pressure gradient, considering that no wake region appears in wall coordinate velocity profiles and the Clauser shape factor is between 4.0 and 5.3. The flow angle is significantly changed by the crossflow generated by the impinging jet.
An edgetone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, 2-dimensional edgetone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle is presented using lattice Boltmznan model with 21 bits, which is introduced a flexible specific heat ratio y to simulate diatomic gases like air. The blown jet is given a parabolic inflow profile for the velocity, and the edges consist of wedges with angle 20 degree (for symmetric wedge) and 23 degree (for inclined wedge), respectively. At a stand-off distance w, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and to propagate towards the downward. Present results presented have shown in capturing small pressure fluctuating resulting from periodic oscillation of the jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Their interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips. It is found that, as the numerical example, satisfactory simulation results on the edgetone can be obtained for the complex flow-edge interaction mechanism, demonstrating the capability of the lattice Boltzmann model with flexible specific heat ratio to predict flow-induced noises in the ventilating systems of ship.

As a research to develop a SCRAM jet engine is actively conducted, a necessity to produce a high-enthalpy flow in a laboratory is increasing. In order to develop the SCRAM-jet engine, stabilized combustion in a supersonic flow-field should be attained, in which a duration time of flow is extremely short. Therefore, a mixing process of breathed air and fuel, which is injected into supersonic flow-fields is one of the most important problem. Since, the flow inside SCRAM jet engine has high-enthalpy, an experimental facility is required to produce such high-enthalpy flow-field. In this study, a detonation-driven shock tunnel was built and was used to produce high-enthalpy flow. Further-more, SCRAM jet engine model equipped backward-facing step was installed at test section and flow-fields were visualized using color-schlieren technique and high speed video camera. The fuel was injected perpendicular to the flow of Mach number three behind backward-facing step. The height of the step, distance of injection and injection pressure were changed to investigate the effects of step on a mixing characteristic between air and fuel. The schlieren photograph and pressure histories show that the fuel was ignited behind the step.
Eco-friendly policies proposed by the government of The Republic of Korea have encouraged the use of eco-friendly vehicles. Hydrogen vehicles have exhibited the highest growth rate, although the current number of registered vehicles is low. In hydrogen vehicles, a thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) is installed to prevent explosions in the hydrogen gas cylinder. When discharged due to low ignition energy, hydrogen gas readily forms a jet flame. The risks induced by such jet flames were analyzed through a numerical analysis. Jet flames can activate TPRDs installed in nearby hydrogen gas cylinders. As a result, high-voltage cables exposed in the lower area of a vehicle can ignite within seconds. There was a 9.5-kW/m2 area around the vehicle (which can result in casualties) at a distance of ~5 m from the hydrogen gas cylinder, and a 37.5-kW/m2 area (which can cause significant damage) in the form of an inverted triangle toward the lower section of the vehicle. We believe that the risk factors analyzed herein should be considered for addressing accidents in hydrogen vehicles.
