Comparison of Performance & Jet Fuel Oil Resistance of Joint Sealant Materials for Airside (공항용 조인트 충진재의 성능 및 내유저항특성 비교연구)

  • The joint sealants used in the airside should resist the high temperature of the jet blast and the jet fuel oil spilled when the aircraft is maintained and filled. The material of joint sealant for the airside should be different from that for the road due to these characteristics. Three different kinds of the joint sealant materials were tested in this paper. The materials include the polysulfide, the polyurethane and the silicon. The test results show that the physical properties and the performance of the polysulfide show the high resistance to the jet blast and the jet fuel oil. When the characteristics of the airside considered, the polysulfide may apply in the both of the runway and the apron area, the polyuretane can be applied the taxiway. The use of the silicon sealant is not recommended for the airside.

Measurements on Transient Mixing Concentrations of Two Fuel Oils using a Quantitative Flow Visualization Technique (정량적 유동가시화 기술을 이용한 이종연료유 과도 혼합 농도분포 측정)

  • Transient mixing states of two different fuel oils, dimethylformamide (DMF) oil and JetA1 oil, were investigated by using a color image processing and a neural network. A tank ($D{\times}H$, $310{\times}370mm$) was filled with JetA1 oil. The DMF oil was filled at a top tank, and was mixed with the JetA1 oil in the tank mixing tank via a sudden opening which was performed by nitrogen gas with 1.9 bar. An impeller was rotated with 700 rpm for mixing enhancements of the two fuel oils. To visualize the mixing state of the DMF oil with the JetA1 oil, the DMF oil was coated with Rhodamine B whose color was red. A LCD monitor was used for uniform illumination. The color changes of the DMF oil were captured by a camcoder and the images were transferred to a host computer for quantifying the information of color changes. The color images of two mixed oils were captured with the camcoder. The R, G, B color information of the captured images was used to quantify the concentration of the DMF oil. To quantify the concentration of the DMF oil in the JetA1 oil, a calibration of color-to-concentration was carried out before the main experiment was done. Transient mixing states of DMF oil with the JetA1 oil since after the sudden infiltration were quantified and characterized with the constructed visualization technique.

  • Interest has been increasing worldwide in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (F-T) as a method of producing synthetic liquid fuels from biomass. Hydroisomerization of $C_7-C_{15}$ paraffins applies to production of diesel fuel with high cetane number and improved cold flow properties, such as viscosity, pour point and freezing point. The commercial products such as fuel jet produced from F-T synthesis should have low freezing and pour points. In this study, our major aim is to develop a catalyst for hydroisomerization of synthesis-oil for bio-jet fuel. Effects of zeolites and platinum loading on hydroisomerization of dodecane were investigated as a model reaction in a batch reactor.

The Status of Production and Usage of Bio-Jet Fuel (바이오항공유 생산 및 사용현황)

  • The usage of jet fuel has been increasing with increasing passenger and logistics movements under globalization. CO2, which is the main global warming gas from aircraft, was charged about 3.5% of total global CO2 emissions and 12% of transportation fuel emissions. For these reasons, a lot of governments and the international civil aviation organization (ICAO) are trying to reduce CO2 emissions via the introduction of bio-jet fuel. In this paper, we showed the jet fuel properties, specifications, and presentative production methods of bio-jet fuel such as alcohol to jet (ATJ), oil to jet (OTJ), gas to jet (GTJ) and sugar to jet (STJ). Also, we described the status of global and domestic bio-jet fuel usage and the policy plan for efficient distribution.

  • Thie study presents the biomass-derived jet (bio-jet) fuel production technologies for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in aviation sector. The aviation sector is responsible for the 2% of the world anthropogenic $CO_2$ emissions and the 10% of the fuel consumption: airlines' costs for fuel reach 30% of operating costs. In addition, the aviation traffic is expected to double within 15 years from 2012, while fuel consumption and $CO_2$ emissions should double in 25 years. Biojet fuels have been claimed to be one of the most promising and strategic solutions to mitigate aviation emissions. This jet fuel, additionally, must meet ASTM International specifications and potentially be a100% drop-in replacement for current petroleum jet fuel. In this study, the current technologies for producing renewable jet fuels, categorized by alcohols-to-jet, oil-to-jet, syngas-to-jet, and sugar-to-jet pathways are reviewed for process, economic analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) on conversion pathways to bio-jet fuel.

  • Kerosene (Coal oil) is a particularly attractive fuel because it is widely used to power jet engines of aircraft as jet fuel and some rocket engine. This paper describes the performance and emission characteristics according to the collant temperature of combustion chamber head of spark ignition engine fuelled with kerosene. As a result, the following knowledge is obtained. As the collant temperature of combustion chamber head is decreased, torque, volumetric efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption have been increased. When coolant temperature of combustion chamber lower, THC emission increased but CO and $NO_x$ emission decreased.

  • A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O$_2$combustion region of the real plant.

  • Combustion stability is one of the most important factors that must be considered in burning of heavy fuel oil, especially low-grade oil. This paper describes the combustion characteristics of petrochemical process by- product in the combustion furnace of heavy fuel oil. Main experimental parameters were combustion load, excess 02, fuel preheating temperature and air/fuel ratio. The capacity of CRF(combustion research facility) used in this study was 1.0 ton/hr and the burner is steam jet type suitable far heavy oil combustion and manufactured by UNIGAS in Italy. The fuel used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, petrochemical process by-product and 3 kinds of 0.5 B-C/process by-product mixtures. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and particulates were measured with the excess $O_2$ and combustion load. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether process by-product can be used as a boiler fuel or not in consideration of flame stability and emission properties.

  • Coal oil is widely used as a home heating fuel for portable and installed coal oil heaters. Today, Coal oil is widely used as fuel for jet engines and some rocket engines in several grades. This paper describes the performance characteristics according to the compression ratio of spark ignition engine fuelled with coal oil. As a result, the following knowledge is obtained: As the compression ratio is decreased, there is an increase in torque, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), heat release rate, and brake thermal efficiency. Higher compression ratio of the engine decreases the ignition delay period, combustion period, and cooling loss.

  • Experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion of 7MW-3 air stages combustion system for a heavy oil firing boiler. Several fuel nozzles were developed for the purpose of lowering pollutions in another institute and ${\Phi}$-jet nozzle among them was equipped to the combustion system. A variety of combustion phenomena were observed as air stage ratio, air fuel ratio and load are changed for each nozzle. Main combustion characteristics are shape of flame, NOx and CO generations, smoke scale number. Through lots of adjustments, the combustion system reaches such goals as the low NOx of 160 ppm, CO of 300 ppm corrected at $O_2$ of 4% and dust of 150 mg/Sm3.
