The effect of temperature distributions on soot volume fraction in double-concentric diffusion flames have been investigated experimentally. Using fine thermocouple wires and a rapid insertion mechanism, we have measured temperature without the effect of soot particles attached to the thermocouple junction, which can lower the temperature signal about 100 K by increasing the heat loss from the junction by radiation. The temperature at the flame axis is higher in the double-concentric diffusion flames than in normal co-flow diffusion flames because of the inverse diffusion flame. However, it is almost the same as that at the periphery of normal flames, on which the inverse flame does not have an effect. Thus, the lower soot concentration found in the double-concentric diffusion flame can be explained by the effect of nitrogen diffusion from the central air jet.
High efficient and environment friendly combustion technologies are used to be operated an extreme condition, which results in unintended flame instability such as extinction and oscillation. The use of electromagnetic energy is one of methods to enhance the combustion stability and a microwave as electromagnetic wave is receiving increased attention recently because of its high performance and low-cost system. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by microwave. Micro jet was introduced to simulate the high velocity of industrial combustor. The results show that micro jet flames had three different modes with increasing oxidizer velocity; attached yellow flame, lifted flame, and lifted partially premixed flame. As a microwave was induced to flames, the overall flame stability and blowout limit were extended with the higher microwave power. Especially the interaction between a flame and a microwave was shown clearly in the partially premixed flame, in which the lift-off height decreased and NOx emission measured in post flame region increased with increasing microwave power. It might be attributed to increase of reactivity due to the abundance of radical pool and the enhanced absorption to thermal energy.
To reveal the newly found liftoff height behavior of hydrogen jet, we have experimentally studied the stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition. The objectives of the present research are to report the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity, to analyse the flame structure and behavior of the lifted jet, and to explain the mechanisms of flame stability in hydrogen turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The velocity of hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone. PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. As results, it has been found that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means that combustion occurs where the local flow velocity is valanced with the turbulent flame propagation velocity.
Extinguishing limits of laminar ethylene/oxygen flames in both normal and inverse co-flow jet burner have been determined experimentally and computationally. An inert gas($N_2$, Ar, $CO_2$) was added into the oxidizer to find the critical concentration and the effectiveness of the agents on flame extinction. The experimental results showed that the physical aspect of inert gases was main mechanism for flame blow-out as same as cup burner test, but the flow effect should be considered to determine the extinction concentration. The numerical prediction was performed with modified WSR model and the result was in good agreement with the measurements. The experimental and numerical methods could be used for the assessment of various flame suppression agents such as minimum extinguishing concentration.

The experimental study is carried out to identify the combustion generated noise mechanism in free turbulent jet diffusion flames. Axial mean fluctuating velocities in cold and reacting flow fields were measured using hot-wire anemometer and LDv.The overall sound pressure level and their spectral distribution in far field with and without combustion were also measured in an anechoic chamber. The axial mean velocity is 10-25% faster and turbulent intensities are about 10 to 15% smaller near active reacting zone than those in nonreacting flow fields. And sound pressure level is about 10-20% higher in reacting flow fields. It is also shown that the spectra of the combustion noise has lower frequency characteristics over a broadband spectrum. These results indicate that the combustion noise characteristics in jet diffusion flames are dominated by energy containing large scale eddies and the combusting flow field itself. Scaling laws correlating the gas velocity and heat of combustion show that the acoustic power of the combustion noise is linearly proportional to the 3.8th power of the mean axial velocity rather than 8th power in nonreacting flow fields, and the SPL increases linearly with logarithmic 1/2th power of the heat of combustion.

Experiments on corresponding jet flames with stagnant point diffusion flames have been carried out in initial injection periods. A compensated measurement of maximum flame temperature, which is based on the ion signal, has been employed to inspect flame responses to time-varying strain rates. The flame responses are obtained at two conditions for the slowly time-varying strain rate and the case of flame extinction, and analyzed to confirm similarity between a stagnant point diffusion flame and an evolving jet diffusion flame. Nonsteady effects are addressed via the comparison between several time scales. The time variation with low strain rates, in which illustrates the flame behavior of the upper branch far from extinction in the well-known S-curve, is confirmed to produce a quasi-steady flame response through the nonsteady experiments. The time variation with strain rates in the case of flame extinction indicates an unsteady effect of flame response. It is therefore found that the flame responses near jet tip depend on time histories of characterized strain rates in the developing process.
Flame characteristics in a double concentric burner has been studied experimentally. Air is supplied through a central nozzle, methane/air premixture is supplied in a inner annular part, and coflowing shield air is supplied to minimize outside disturbances. Depending on flow rate and concentration, various flame shapes can be observed. As the flow rate difference between central air jet and annular premixed jet is varied, several distinctive flames are observed. Conditions of partially premixed flames are further investigated; nozzle attached rich premixed flame, inner lifted flame, and outer lifted flame. Using the Abel transformation of digitized images of flames, cross- sectional images of flames can be obtained, from which overall structure of flames can be identified. PLIF measurement of OR radical was also conducted. OR radicals were mainly distributed in diffusion flame region. From the difference of OR distribution between nozzle attached and lifted flames, similarity of OR distribution between tribrachial flame and lifted flames in this study are observed.
Dynamic structures of unsteady $CH_4$/Air jet diffusion flames with flame-vortex interaction were numerically investigated. A time-dependent, axisymmetric computational model was adopted for this calculation. Two step global reaction mechanism which considers 6 species, was used to calculate the reaction rates. The predicted results including gravitational effect show that the large outer vortices and the small inner vortex street can be well simulated without any additional disturbances in the downstream of nozzle tip. It was found that the temperature and species concentrations had various values for the same mixture fraction in flame-vortex interaction region. This unsteady jet flame configuration accompanying flame-vortex interaction is expected to give good implications for the structure of turbulent flames.
The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the l/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.
The effect of carbon dioxide addition on soot formation was investigated in jet diffusion flames in coflow. Flame temperature were measured with R-type thermocouple and the boundary temperature between blue and yellow flame was confirmed. Light-extinction method was introduced for the relative soot density (1-I/$I_0$) in the in-flame region. He-Ne laser with wave length at 632.8 nm was used for the light source, and the signal attenuated by absorption and scattering was detected directly. Oxidizer velocity effect on soot formation was studied to know that the thermal influence for soot formation. The results showed that the temperature of both blue and yellow flame were decreased according to the dilution of carbon dioxide but boundary temperature was nearly constant. The relative soot density was lower when carbon dioxide was added in oxidizer stream and oxidizer velocity increased. These were caused by the reduction of flame temperature and shorter residence time for soot growth. Also carbon dioxide addition enhanced the instability of jet flames like flickering, so the flame length was a little longer than pure ethylene/air flame.
