Water extracts of rice grasshopper (Oxya japonica japonica Thurnberg) were prepared and their antitumor and immunostimulatory activities were investigated using a flow cytometer. When LCT-CT was ip injected into ICR mice at the dose of 33.3 mg/kg before and after the implantation of $4{\times}10^5$ cells/mouse of sarcoma 180 tumor cells, it inhibited the growth of the tumor cells by 96.6%, showed lymphoblstogenic activities on the splenic lymphocytes and increased the expression of CD25 molecules on the splenic T lymphocytes. When co-cultured with the splenic lymphocytes of a BALB/c mouse, LCT-CT showed strong immunostimulatory activities at the concentration of $25{\sim}100{\mu}g/ml$ by significantly increasing lymphoblasts ratio and CD25 expression.
Tirteen rice varieties of Japonica-Indica briefing type (J-I breeding type) and ten of Japonica type produced in Korea in 1985 were studied on cooking quality of milled rice and texture of cooked rice. The results are as follows: in the Looking quality, water uptake ratio of cooked rice and total solid in residual liquid showed significant $(p<2.172^*\;and\;2.419^*,\;respectively)$ between J-I breeding type and Japonica type The water uptake ratio of cooked rice was higher J-I breeding type than Japonica type but the total solid and intensity of iodine blue value in residual liquid were lower J-I breeding type than Japonica type. Minimum cooking time of milled rice showed significant $(p<2.375^*)$ between J-I breeding type and Japonica type for texture of cooked rice. The cooking time of J-I breeding type shorter than Japonica type. Hardness and cohesiveness in texture of cooked rice appeared to be significant cant $(p<4.370^{***}\;and\;2.371^*,\;respectively)$ between J-I breeding type and Japonica type, and then hardness was higher Japonica type than J-I breeding type, but cohesiveness was lower Japonica type than J-I breeding type. The correlation coefficients between amylose content and adhesiveness of varieties in the same type was $-0.922^{**}$ in J-I breeding type and $-0.915^**}$ in Japonica type. The correlation coefficients between protein content and hardness of the varieties in the same type was $0.954^{**}$ in Japonica type and so denoted as positive correlation. And the scatter diagram between protein and hardness could be divided into J-I breeding type and Japonica type.

E. japonica is a well-known medicinal plant in Japan. The leaves of E. japonica were reported to have a hypoglycemic action. However, seeds of E. japonica are discarded and not used. To elucidate for anti-diabetic effects of E. japonica, Type 2 diabetic mice were allocated to control group, E. japonica leaf, and seed extract group. Animals were fed a 2018S Teklad global 18% protein rodent diet. Animals were received daily oral injections of E. japonica leaf or seed extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight for 6 weeks. Body weight, food intake and water intake, and total adipose tissue weight of animals were significantly reduced by feeding of E. japonica leaf extract. All E. japonica extract groups significantly decreased fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin levels, size of adipocytes and serum adiponectins. However, they did not have a beneficial effect on the serum triglyceride and cholesterol in the diabetic animals. These results suggest that E. japonica seed and leaf extracts have a antidiabetic effect by controlling of blood glucose and decrease of size of adipocytes in db/db mice and seed extract is more effective in hypoglycemic action than leaf extract.
This study was designed to observe the effects of the feeding Callophyllis japonica extracts on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid in the serum of dietary hypercholesterolemic rats(S.D. strain, ?) fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in serum were significantly lower in the Callophylis japonica extracts group than in the choloesterol supplemented diet group. Concentrations of HDL-cholesterol in serum were higher in the Callophyllis japonica extracts group than in the cholesterol supplemented diet group. Concentrations of free cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and blood glucose in serum were significantly lower in the Callophyllis japonica extracts group than in the cholesterol supplemented diet group. The activities of aspatate aminotransferae(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) in serum were lower in the CAllophyllis japonica extracts supplemented group than in the cholesterol diet group. From the above research, the physiological activity substances in Callophylis japonica extracts were effective on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid compositions in serum of dietary hypercholesterolemic rats.
According to the traditional chinese herbal Cuscuta japonica Choisy and C. australis R.Be (original plant of Semen Cuscutae in Korea) have been used to cure pimple. In order to prove their bacteriostatic effects against Propionibacterium acnes, we performed the micro broth dilution method. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of C. japonica juice was 27.3 mg/ml, but C. australis juice showed no effect. The MIC of water extracted C. japonica seed and Wontosa and Bupjetosa were $960\;{\mu}g/ml$. The MIC of both water and ethanol extracts of C. australis seed was $9240\;{\mu}g/ml$. But ethanol extracts of C. japonicaseeds, Wontosa and Bupjetosa had no bacteriostatic activity. We also performed the disk diffusion test, C. japonica juice had prominent effect. Water extracts of C. japonica seed, Wontosa and Bupjetosa showed bacterio-static effect in 10 mg/ml, and C. australis seed in 10 mg/ml. The ethanol extract of C. japonica seed, Wontosa and Bupjetosa, and C. australis seed showed bacteriostatic effect in 20 mg/ml.
BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the impacts of hydrophytes on water quality, so there is a need to research the effects of death of hydrophytes on the worsening of water quality. This study aimed to monitor the effects of Trapa japonica death on reservoir water quality.METHODS AND RESULTS: T.japonica shows the life cycle that highest growth in summer and rapid death in fall decomposing their body in general. T.japonica contains comparatively large portion of nutrients and minerals. Through the field survey using Mesocosm to identify the effects of excessive population of T.japonica on water quality, the water quality of plots planted T.japonica is gradually worse compared with the control plot. And the result of Wilcoxon-test also shows that the negative effect of T.japonica on water quality with significant (p<0.05).CONCLUSION: It is necessary to control the population growth of T.japonica in order to prevention of water pollution in fall.
Radical scavenging and antioxidant activities of Laminaria japonica and fermented its extracts were evaluated. Freeze-dried L. japonica was fermented by Aspergillus oryzae and extracted with distilled water. The extract solution was mixed with ethanol and centrifuged. The supernatant was ethanol soluble fraction, non-polysaccharide fraction (ESF), and residue was ethanol insoluble precipitation, polysaccharide fraction (EIP). ESF was subjected to sequential fractionation with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. To determine the radical scavenging and antioxidant activities of these, DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical scavenging activities and linoleic acid oxidation were tested. Among the extracts, ESF of fermented L. japonica showed the highest radical scavenging activity. The ESF showed DPPH radical scavenging activity of 64.33% at concentration of $50{\mu}g/mL$. It was higher than 57.70% of vit. C. Ethyl acetate and butanol fraction had high value of radical scavenging and antioxidant activities, especially butanol fraction of fermented L. japonica was 79.48 % of hydroxyl radical scavenging activity at concentration of $50{\mu}g/mL$. The fermented L japonica had radical scavenging and antioxidant activities higher than L. japonica. These results suggest that fermented L japonica is healthy food having radical scavenging and antioxidant activities.
This study evaluated the quality characteristics of dried noodles made of wheat flour with different concentrations of Dioscorea japonica flour. Cooking quality, mechanical texture properties and viscosity were measured, and sensory evaluation was performed with the prepared noodles. Water binding capacity, solubility and swelling power of the composite Dioscorea japonica flour-wheat flours were higher than those of pure wheat flour. Gelatinization points of the composite Dioscorea japonica flour-wheat flours were increased and initial viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$, viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$ after 15 minutes and maximum viscosity of these composites were decreased, with increasing Dioscorea japonica flour content, as measured by amylograph. With increasing Dioscorea japonica flour content, L and b values were decreased, but a value was increased, for the color values, while weight and volume of the cooked noodles and turbidity of the soup were increased. For the textural characteristics, the addition of Dioscorea japonica flour increased the hardness and decreased the adhesiveness, cohesiveness and springiness. Overall, the noodles made with 10% Dioscorea japonica flour were preferred more than the other noodles, as tested by sensory evaluation.

Cordyceps is a fungus used as a traditional medicine in China, Japan, and Korea. Paecilomyces (P.) japonica is a new cordyceps that was recently cultivated on silkworm pupae in Korea. The present study evaluated the toxicological effects of P. japonica in rats. Forty rats were treated with oral doses of P. japonica (0, 20, 100, or 500 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks. Twenty additional rats were treated with 0 or 500 mg/kg/day of P. japonica for 4 weeks and then maintained for 2 weeks without treatment. Clinical signs, body weight, food and water consumption, and organ weight as well as hematology, serum biochemistry, and histopathology data were examined. Body weight gain of the group treated with 500 mg/kg/day was significantly reduced. Microscopically, karyomegaly, single cell necrosis, and mitosis were observed in the renal tubular epithelium of all treated groups. In conclusion, P. japonica caused a reduction of body weight and renal injury in rats. The no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of P. japonica was less than 20 mg/kg/day.
This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of Camellia japonica extracts for cosmetic applications. Antimicrobial effects of C. japonica were determined against Bacillus cereus by methanol extract of new leaf, stem and stem-leaf; Malassezia pachydermatis, by methanol extract of new leaf and stem-leaf. A methanol extract of new leaf of C. japonica showed strong antimicrobial effect using paper disc method against most species especially in Staphylococcus aureus. Antioxidative activities of C. japonica seed oils were determined by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. The value of $EC_{50}$ of DPPH scavenging activity was 500 mg/mL and that of ABTS scavenging activity was 96.10 mg/mL. C. japonica oil extracts showed lower antioxidative activities than those of gallic acid and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Electron microscopic observation of damaged virgin hairs of different ages gave a stabilizing effects after C. japonica seed oil treatment. These results indicated that the extracts of stem, leaf and seed of C. japonica could be used as cosmetic ingredient combined with appropriate formula.
