A comparative analysis of domestir vs. overseas postgraduate education in science and technology

  • Domestic versus overseas postgraduate education in science and engineering has its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the issues involved in developing countries is the problem of brain drain. This study deals with the cost and benefit of domestic and foreign education, problems in brain drain and the social and private rate of return analysis in postgraduate science and technology education in Korea.

  • In the present paper we give a brief account of importance and necessity of pre and in-service education for professional development of mathematics teachers. We discuss some critical issues and new strategies for enhancing professional development. A few new strategies for professional learning are also explained.   • Here we analyze a case of redesigned course named "Prospect of Nuclear Engineering" as an example of student-entered education which came to the fore of university education innovation. This course was reformed from lecture-based to student-centered class by changing the context as follows: Stimulating students by addressing various problems or episodes behind scientific and mathematical concepts in the history; Offering experimental project to perceive the importance of differential equations; Exploring the research status and issues of nuclear engineering and the ways of attacking them by discipline; Discussing the public acceptance of nuclear power plants. Small group activities using 'small group discussion' and 'peer-learning' have been applied in this course to enhance students' critical and creative ability. In the survey, students rated highly in the fact that they could actively interact with the peers and that they could think for themselves through 'small group discussion' and 'peer-learning' which is not just the way of conveying knowledge.

지식기반사회 공학교육의 발전방향 탐색: EAC를 넘어 EAL로 (A Search for Directions in Engineering Education Development in a Knowledge-Based Society in Terms of Engineering Ethics Education: An Exploration of Ethics Across the Living Beyond Ethics Across the Curriculum)

  • The purpose of this research is to search for directions in engineering education development in a knowledge-based society in terms of 'engineering ethics educatio'. Engineering ethics education, having been recognized as an inter-disciplinary research field between engineering and philosophy, is a field that has been a major issue in countries that execute engineering education accreditation. And engineering ethics education has been a peculiar research field focused on EAC(Ethics across the Curriculum). Therefore, this study has deduced several results by critically reviewing the extant EAC-related literatures. First, accomplishments by various researchers that may well quoted as the leader of engineering ethics study and education or the educational achievements of Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan are considerably substantial. However, the EAC discussions thus far still raise numerous barriers and unsolved issues. Second, the discussion of EAC thus far comprehends limitations such as a shortage of the recognition of inter-disciplinary study in the field of education and insufficient participation by education majors. Third, the engineering and philosophy field experts who have been leading EAC discussions have been pursuing integrated education courses either consciously or unconsciously. Fourth, EAC discussions may expand by again illuminating the intent of integrated education courses in terms of 'education and the study of education', and this new facet can be summed up with a new term, EAL, which stands for 'Ethics across the Living.'

메이커 교육 운동의 이론적 기초: 메이커 운동의 학습 이론과 교육 사상 (Theoretical Foundation of the Maker Movement for Education: Learning Theories and Pedagogy of the Maker Movement)

  • The author investigated the momentum of the maker movement and its educational implications with the following four research questions: 1. What is the maker movement? 2. What is the nature of our societal interest in the maker movement? 3. Which learning theories are associated with the maker movement? 4. What are the educational implications of the maker movement? The author reviewed the history of education in terms of the maker movement and concluded that Papert's learning-by-making approach provided a theoretical foundation of the maker movement. The maker movement aims to engage participants in Do-It-Yourself(DIY) activities, the spirit of tinkering, and a hands-on approach. Also, the maker movement meets the educational demands of fostering students' 21st-century abilities and technological literacy. Lastly, the author anticipated the issues that may arise following the introduction of the maker movement in K-12 schools. In conclusion, the author discussed the challenges of the school maker education movement and suggested the bottom-up approach to utilize the school resources of technology and engineering education.

다면적 평가를 통한 교육성과 평가도구 개발 및 분석연구 (Practical Measurement on Education Outcome Through Multi-Evaluations)

  • This paper diagnose subjects and measures the learning ability of students based on the goal of developing an assessment tool for education productivity based on multi-aspect evaluation conducted by ICEE at Honam University. Furthermore, develop an assessment tool for education productivity that provides a motive to bring detailed improvements in teaching methods through the diagnosis. In addition, a method for compensating the issues and improving the quality of subject is suggested to develop learning ability of students through applying the assessment tool. An integrated operated system of CQI is desired to be built along with quality improvement of education through measuring academic quality by studying the methods for enhancing academic and learning ability achievement from analysis of the curriculum provided in the "ABEEK program". Through this study the current state of education productivity is presented through analyzing the difference between students who participated in the "ABEEK program" and who did not participate, and operating a comparison between the student's comprehension on their majors and liberal arts by the multi-aspect evaluation that has been conducted for 2 years.

공학소양교육 사례로서의 DNA 구조 발견 (Discovery of the DNA double helix structure as a model of Liberal Education for Engineers)

  • This study is an analysis of the process of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure from an engineering literacy education perspective. The explanation of the DNA double helix structure by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1952 is a well-known scientific episode. The process is also a combination of various incidents that can frequently happen in competitive engineering research and development situations. Therefore, the process of the discovery of the DNA structure is a remarkable event that can cover all subjects, such as engineering and ethics, research ethics, communication between researchers, engineering and leadership, engineering and teamwork, and engineering and women. This paper focuses on analyzing the research ethics issues associated with Rosalind Franklin and comparing and analyzing the three teams that were very close to the discovery of the DNA structure. By looking at why the Watson and Crick team got the final answer instead of the Linus Pauling's team or the Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin's team, the virtues of the technology development process that should be taught in engineering literacy education will be naturally presented.

  • 본 논문은 공학교육과정에 기술사업화 교육이 본격적으로 도입되고 있는 최근 추세 하에 국내 공학교육 환경을 고려한 효과적인 기술사업화 교육시스템 모델을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 특히 기존 논문에서 제시하고 있는 국내 기술사업화의 한계를 정리하고 이에대한 개선방안을 제시하는데 큰 의의가 있다. 이를 위해 첫째, 문헌연구를 통해 국내 공학교육 과정에서 전개되고 있는 기술사업화 교육의 주요 이슈들에 대해 진단하고 효과적인 기술사업화 교육시스템의 구축 방향을 분석하였다. 둘째, 문헌연구와 해외사례연구를 통해 공학교육과정에서 도입해야 하는 효과적인 기술사업화 교육시스템 모델을 정의하였다. 셋째, 국내 공학과정에 이미 도입된 기술사업화 교육시스템과 효과적인 기술사업화 교육 시스템 모델간의 비교연구를 통해 현재 국내 공학교육에서 이루어지고 있는 국내 기술사업화 교육시스템의 문제점을 진단하고 합리적인 개선방안을 제시하였다.

빅 데이터 분석을 통한 해외건설 빅 이슈 개발 (Development of Overseas Construction Big Issues based on Analysis of Big Data)

  • 본 연구는 빅 데이터 분석을 통한 해외건설 빅 이슈를 도출하였다. 해외건설 Big 이슈 도출을 위하여 2016년 10월 1일부터 2017년 9월 30일 동안 주요 포털사이트 39,436건, 종합일간지 10,387건, 건설전문지 3,36건을 포함해 총 53,759건 대상으로 분석하였고, 그 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지난 1년간 해외건설 주요 이슈를 살펴보면, 여전히 중동 지역에 편중되고 저가 수주 위주의 플랜트 사업이 한계점이 두드러지게 나타났다. 전년 대비 2017년 상반기, 해외건설 수주가 다소 상승하는 추세를 보이기도 했으나 대외 정세의 불확실성과 국제유가의 하락 등으로 여전히 수주 불안정성을 보인다. 둘째, 최근 1년 해외건설 관련 이슈 중 해외건설 8대 핵심 키워드 기준으로 관심사를 분석한 결과, 지역(29.9%), 기업환경(22.0%), 수익성(17.0%), 단체(15.1%), 사업(5.2%), 시장환경(3.6%), 정책 및 제도(3.6%), 교육(3.5%) 순으로 나타났다. 셋째, 8개 키워드에 대한 총 30개의 이슈 후보 중 담론의 확산성과 지속성이 있는 10대 핵심 이슈를 추출하였다. 이를 토대로 해외건설 핵심 이슈별 상세분석 및 시사점을 도출하였다. 빅 데이터 분석을 통한 해외건설 빅 이슈를 도출한 결과 4차 산업혁명 시대의 도래에 대응하고 국내 건설업계의 위기 상황을 극복할 새로운 산업 패러다임의 대전환점을 맞이해야 하며 건설산업에 고부가가치 기술을 육성하여 수익 창출을 견인해 글로벌 건설경쟁력을 키워야 한다는 시사점이 도출되었다.

Practical issues in signal processing for structural flexibility identification

  • Compared to ambient vibration testing, impact testing has the merit to extract not only structural modal parameters but also structural flexibility. Therefore, structural deflections under any static load can be predicted from the identified results of the impact test data. In this article, a signal processing procedure for structural flexibility identification is first presented. Especially, practical issues in applying the proposed procedure for structural flexibility identification are investigated, which include sensitivity analyses of three pre-defined parameters required in the data pre-processing stage to investigate how they affect the accuracy of the identified structural flexibility. Finally, multiple-reference impact test data of a three-span reinforced concrete T-beam bridge are simulated by the FE analysis, and they are used as a benchmark structure to investigate the practical issues in the proposed signal processing procedure for structural flexibility identification.
