  • This study is aimed to evaluate the embedment effect of foundation as compared to the surface foundation on the response of a base-isolated nuclear power plant structure. For this purpose, the boundary reaction method (BRM), which is a two-step frequency domain and time domain technique, is used for the nonlinear SSI analysis considering nonlinear behavior of base isolators. The numerical model of the BRM is verified by comparing the numerical results obtained by the BRM and the conventional frequency-domain SSI analysis for an equivalent linear SSI system. Finally, the displacement response of the base isolation and the horizontal response of the structure obtained by the nonlinear SSI analysis using the moat foundation model are compared with those using the surface foundation model. The comparison showed that the displacement response of the base isolation can be reduced by considering the embedment effect of foundation.

  • Shaking table tests are carried out on a single-degree-of-freedom mass that is equipped with a hybrid base isolation system. The isolator consists of a set of four specially-designed friction pendulum systems (FPS) and a magnetorheological (MR) damper. The structure and its hybrid isolation system are subjected to various intensities of near- and far-fault earthquakes on a large shake table. The proposed fuzzy controller uses feedback from displacement or acceleration transducers attached to the structure to modulate resistance of the semi-active damper to motion. Results from several types of passive and semi-active control strategies are summarized and compared. The study shows that a combination of FPS isolators and an adjustable MR damper can effectively provide robust control of vibration for a large full-scale structure undergoing a wide variety of seismic loads.

  • Reaction Wheel Assembly (RWA) is one of the major disturbance sources that have influence upon the Line of Sight (LOS) of payload. A micro-vibration induced by RWA is propagated through the satellite structure and decrease the LOS stability performance of payload. This effect shall be analyzed through the jitter analysis. If a requirement or specification of payload jitter level is found to be not satisfied according to the jitter analysis campaign, some modification or redesign should be done on the satellite structure or a couple of isolator should be attached on the RWA interface in order to reduce the transmitted vibration level of RWA. The purpose of ???RWA isolator test? is to roughly evaluate the performance of vibration suppression level with a passive RWA isolator made of rubber. For this test, actual RWA is used as a vibration source and a couple of cube-shaped rubber mount designed for satellite is used as a passive isolator. There may be several considerations in order to accommodate RWA isolator to spacecraft such as not only vibration reduction performance but also thermal conduction problem, mechanical size, RWA alignment problem, etc. But in this report the feasibility of RWA isolator is analyzed only in a vibration suppression point of view. As a result, high frequency vibration of RWA above 50Hz is perfectly attenuated with isolators, however, first harmonic components below 50Hz became larger due to the additional low frequency resonance modes of roll, pitch, yaw rigid body motion of RWA+bracket.

  • The vibrations caused by metro operation propagate through surrounding soil, further induce secondary vibrations of the nearby underground structures and adjacent buildings. In order to investigate the effects of vibrations caused by metro on use performance of buildings, vibration experiment of Chengdu museum was carried out firstly. Then, the coupling tunnel-soil-structure finite element model was established with software ANSYS detailedly, providing a useful tool for investigating the vibration performances of structures. Furthermore, the dynamic responses and vibration predictions of museum building were obtained respectively by the whole process time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis, which were compared with the vibration reference values of museum. Quantitative analyses of the museum building performance were carried out, and the possible tendency and changing laws of vibration level with floors were proposed. Finally, the related vibration isolation measures were compared and discussed. The tests and analysis results show that: The vertical vibration responses almost increased with the increasing of building floors, while weak floors existed for the curve of horizontal vibration; The vertical vibrations were larger than the horizontal vibrations, indicating the vibration performances of building caused by metro were characterized with vertical vibrations; The frequencies of the museum corresponding to the peak vibration levels were around 6~17Hz; The damping effect of structure with 33m-span cantilever on vertical vibration was obvious, however, the damping effect of structure with foundation vibration isolators was not obvious.

  • In this paper, a power amplifier module for WCDMA base-station applications is designed and implemented using GaN field-effect transistors (FETs), which uses an envelope tracking bias system. The designed module consists of an high gain MMIC amplifier, a driver amplifier, a power amplifier, and bias circuits for envelope tracking applications. Especially, a FET bias sequencing circuit and two isolators are integrated for stable RF operations. All circuits are assembled within a single housing, so its dimension is just $17.8{\times}9.8{\times}2.0\;cm3$. Measured results show that the developed power amplifier module has good envelope tracking capability: the power-added efficiency of 35% at the output power range from 30dBm to 40dBm over a wide range of drain bias.

  • The scale and nature of the recent earthquakes in the world and the related earthquake disaster index coerce the concerned community to become anxious about it. Therefore, it is crucial that seismic lateral load effect will be appropriately considered in structural design. Application of seismic isolation system stands as a consistent alternative against this hazard. The objective of the study is to evaluate the structural and economic feasibility of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings with base isolation located in medium risk seismic region. Linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses as well as linear static analysis under site-specific bi-directional seismic excitation have been carried out for both fixed based (FB) and base isolated (BI) buildings in the present study. The superstructure and base of buildings are modeled in a 3D finite element model by consistent mass approach having six degrees of freedom at each node. The floor slabs are simulated as rigid diaphragms. Lead rubber bearing (LRB) and High damping rubber bearing (HDRB) are used as isolation device. Change of structural behaviors and savings in construction costing are evaluated. The study shows that for low to medium rise buildings, isolators can reduce muscular amount of base shears, base moments and floor accelerations for building at soft to medium stiff soil. Allowable higher horizontal displacement induces structural flexibility. Though incorporating isolator increases the outlay, overall structural cost may be reduced. The application of base isolation system confirms a potential to be used as a viable solution in economic building design.

  • Bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet(Bi:YIG) films, which show excellent magnetic and magneto-optical properties as well as low optical losses by optimizing their deposition and post-annealing condition, have been attracting great attention in optical device research area. In this study, the Bi:YIG thick films were deposited with the aerosol deposition method for the final purpose of applying them to optical isolators. Since the aerosol deposition is based on the impact adhesion of sub-micrometer particles accelerated by a carrier gas to a substrate, the flow rate of carrier gas, which is in proportion to mechanically collision energy, should be treated as an important parameter. The Bi:YIG($Bi_{0.5}Y_{2.5}Fe_5O_{12}$) particles with $100{\sim}500$ nm in average diameter were carried and accelerated by nitrogen gas with the flow rate of 0.5 l/min${\sim}$10 l/min. The coercive force decreased from 51 Oe to 37 Oe exponentially with increasing gas flow rate. This is presumably due to the fact that the optimal collision energy results in reduction of impurity and pore, which makes the film to be soft magnetically. The saturation magnetization decreased due to crystallographical distortion of the film with increasing gas flow rate.

  • In this paper, a simple seismic analysis model of the KALIMER-600 sodium-cooled fast reactor selected to be the candidate of the GEN-IV reactor is developed. By using this model, the seismic time history analysis is carried out to investigate the feasibilities of a seismic isolation design. The developed simple seismic analysis model includes the reactor building, reactor system,, IHTS piping system, steam generator, and seismic isolators. The dynamic characteristics of the simple seismic model are verified with the detailed 3-dimensional finite element analysis for each part of the KALIMER-600 system. By using the developed simple seismic model, the seismic time history analyses for both cases of a seismic isolation and non-isolation design are performed for the artificial time history of a SSE (Safe Shutdown Earthquake) 0.3g. From the comparison of the calculated floor response spectrum, it is verified that the seismically isolated KALIMER-600 reactor building shows a great performance of a seismic isolation and assures a seismic integrity.

  • Recently, high-rise base isolated building structures with shear keys are often constructed in Japan which frequently occurs earthquakes. High-rise buildings are less damaged because those buildings have longer natural period than md or low rise buildings. The shear key is device that prevents the base isolators operating by the wind loads not by the earthquake loads. In case of big base shear force acts on the shear keys by earthquake, this device is broken and base isolator is operated. Therefore, seismic intensities play a role in acting on the shear keys. If wind loads are hither than the earthquake loads, the shear keys designed by wind loads are not operated in earthquakes. So, the requirements of shear keys in high-rise base isolated building structures must be examined in Korea with moderate seismic legions. In this study shear keys are applied with 5 and 15 stories base isolated building structures and investigated their dynamic responses to original and 1/2 scale downed El Centre NS(1940) ground motions. The results show that the yield shear forces of the shear keys affect significantly the dynamic behavior of base isolated building structures

  • In general, pyroshock is generated from the actuation of separation devices for several stage, fairing, and satellite separation in the flight of a launch vehicle. During these events, transient vibration phenomenon called pyroshock, which shows large acceleration in the high frequency range, occurs and it can result in the malfunction of electronic components which is equipped inside the launch vehicle or satellite. In this paper, mesh washer isolators made out of SMA were introduced for the isolation of pyroshock. One type of isolator primarily used pseudoelastic characteristics of SMA and the other type of isolator used shape memory effect of SMA. For the study of basic load-displacement relationship of each SMA isolator, compressive loading tests were performed and the results showed the capability of the isolator itself. Pyroshock isolation tests were followed and verified the outstanding isolation performance of isolator. In addition, random vibration tests were also performed and checked the dynamic characteristics of each SMA isolator.
