  • This paper proposes a very fast preprocessor for isolated word recognition. The proposed preprocessor has a small computational cost for extracting candidate words. In the preprocessor, we used a feature sorting algorithm instead of vector quantization to reduce the computational cost. In order to show the effectiveness of our preprocessor, we compared it to a speech recognition system based on semi-continuous hidden Markov Model and a VQ-based preprocessor by computing their recognition performances of a speaker independent isolated word recognition. For the experiments, we used the speech database consisting of 244 words which were uttered by 40 male speakers. The set of speech data uttered by 20 male speakers was used for training, and the other set for testing. As the results, the accuracy of the proposed preprocessor was 99.9% with 90% reduction rate for the speech database.

  • In the present study, we have examined the crossability of four species in the A. jaluense complex to provide additional information on their delimitation and levels of differentiation. Crosses between diploid A. chiisanense and the tetraploid species including A. jaluense s. str., A. triphyllum, and A. pseudoproliferum yielded no fruit- or seed-set, indicating that the former species is reproductively completely isolated from the latter three species. In interspecific crosses between the tetraploid species, combinations involving A. jaluense s. str. resulted in much reduced fruit- and seed-set, indicating that A. jaluense s. str. is more or less reproductively isolated from the other tetraploid species. However, crossing data revealed the absence of reproductive isolation between A. triphyllum and A. pseudoproliferum These results strongly support the relationships that have been previously suggested for the A. jaluense complex on the basis of morphology, chromosome number, and flavonoid chemistry.

  • Pseudomonas aerugionsa is a commonly isolated nosocomial pathogen. DNA fingerprinting of P. aerugionsa is examined by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). In this study, P. aeruginosa were isolated from environmental and clinical specimens and the molecular typing of the microorganisms was investigated by RAPD. Thirty strains of P. aeruginosa were selected from the strains isolated formerly and submitted for type identification to the University Hospital. 15 strains of P. aeruginosa were received from Chungnam University Hospital and 14 strains from Gyeongsang University Hospital. DNA of P. aeruginosa was extracted by Qiagen genomic DNA kit. PCR mixtures were set up and incubated, Reactions mixtures were made to be optimal for P. aeruginosa. RAPD typing analysis was carried out by the multivariate statistical program (MVSP) V3.0. RAPD type I was the most common pattern and included 23 strains. Most of strains from Gyeongsang University Hospital belonged to RAPD type lb and 15 strains from Chungnam University Hospital to RAPD type I or II. RAPD typing of P. aeruginosa isolated from the environmental and clinical specimens was very simple and reproducible.

  • This paper suggests a new non-isolated high voltage gain DC-DC converter with two switches. The proposed two-switch converter has the following characteristics: a high voltage gain, a continuous input current with a small ripple, a reduction in the size of the inductor, and a simple circuit with only a few elements. A theoretical analysis, guidelines for parameter selection, and a comparison with conventional non-isolated high step-up converters are presented. A prototype of 250 W is set up to demonstrate the correctness of the proposed converter. Results obtained from simulations and experiments are presented.

  • Let $f\;:\;M\;{\rightarrow}\;M$ be a diffeomorphism on a closed $C^{\infty}$ manifold. Let $\Lambda$ be a transitive set. In this paper, we show that (i) $C^1$-generically, $f$ has the shadowing property on a locally maximal $\Lambda$ if and only if $\Lambda$ is hyperbolic, (ii) f has the $C^1$-stably shadowing property on $\Lambda$ if and only if $\Lambda$ is hyperbolic.

  • In this paper, post-processing step is presented to remove noises and develop a fully automated scheme to segment flowers in natural scene images. The scheme to segment flowers using a level set algorithm in the natural scene images produced unexpected and isolated noises because the level set relies only on the color and edge information. The experimental results shows that the proposed method successfully removes noises in the foreground and background.

  • Superstructures and isolation systems of seismically isolated buildings located close to active faults may observe increased seismic demands resulting from long-period and high-amplitude velocity and displacement pulses existent in near-fault ground motions as their fundamental periods may be close to or coincident with these near-fault pulse periods. In order to take these effects into account, the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC97) has specified near-source factors that scale up the design spectrum depending on the closest distance to the fault, the soil type at the site, and the properties of the seismic source. Although UBC97 has been superseded by the 2015 International Building Code in the U.S.A., UBC97 near-source factors are still frequently referred in the design of seismically isolated buildings around the world. Therefore it is deemed necessary and thus set as the aim of this study to assess the necessity and the adequacy of near-source factors for seismically isolated buildings. Benchmark buildings of different heights with isolation systems of different properties are used in comparing seismic responses obtained via time history analyses using a large number of historical earthquakes with those obtained from spectral analyses using the amplified spectrums established through UBC97 near-source factors. Results show that near-source factors are necessary but inadequate for superstructure responses and somewhat unconservative for base displacement response.

  • The lytic activity of the set of swine and chicken phages which were derived from lysogenic Staphylococcus hyicus strains of swine and chicken origin was compared by means of S. hyicus isolated from swine, chicken and cattle. Of the 80 strains each from swine and chicken, 71 (88.8%) of strains from swine and all the strains of chicken origin were found to be lysogenic. Swine phages showed wider range of lytic activity to the examined strains than that of chicken phages. Using chicken phages at $100{\times}routine$ test dilution (RTD), 25.0%, 85.6% and 50.0% of swine, chicken and bovine strains were lysed, respectively. However, when the set of swine phages was used at $100{\times}RTD$, higher frequency of the typable strains was found in strains of swine and chicken origin (73.8% and 90.2%). Phage F12 and L16 from chicken set were found to be highly active with chicken and bovine strains. On the contrary, all the swine strains were completely resistant to lysis by the two phages at $100{\times}RTD$. Thirteen (12.5%) of 104 S. aureus strains, 1 (1.8%) of 55 S. simudance strains, 31 (58.5%) of 53 S. chromo genes strains, and none of 31 strains of other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species isolated from bovine mastitis were typable with the set of swine phages.

  • In analyzing bivariate date the sample correlation coefficient is often used, and it is quite sensitive to one or few isolated cases. In this article we derive a formula for the effect of $textsc{k}$ observations on the samples correlation coefficient by the deletion method. To give a reference value for the isolated cases the asymptotic distribution fo the formula is derived. Also, we give some interpretations on several types of isolated cases and an example based on a real data set.
