Change reaction of fatigue recovery material before and after taping during isokinetic exercise

  • This study examined the effects of kinesio taping on recovery from fatigue induced by an exercise of concentric contraction using an isokinetic machine. The fatigue was introduced by a mode of exercise at 60°/sec, 50 repetitions for three sessions. The changes of blood ammonia, lactate, LDH, and CK as a marker of fatigue were monitored. Eight healthy collegiate students participated in two experiments; 1) kinesio taping application condition and 2) no kinesio taping application condition. Before experiments, their physical characteristics were measured. For the experiment, blood samples were taken before and immediately after exercise, and 24hr as well as 72hr of recovery period. Window SPSS package 12.0 version was used and one-way ANOVA with repeated measures were employed. The results were as follows. 1) Blood ammonia tended to reduce along the recovery, but no differences between conditions were noticed. 2) Blood lactate tended to reduce during the recovery period, but differences between conditions were not noticed. 3) The LDH was not different between conditions and CK tended to reduce during the recovery period, but differences between conditions were not noticed. Based on the results, kinesio taping did not influence on recovery phase of blood ammonia, lactate concentration, LDH, and CK.

Effects of Kinematics and Kinetics of the Lower Extremities Joint during Drop Landing in Adult Women with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (슬개대퇴동통증후가 성인 여성의 드롭랜딩 시 하지 주요관절의 운동역학적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: This study investigated the different in isokinetic peak strength of the knee joint, and kinetics and kinematics in drop landing pattern of lower limb between the patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) patients and normal. Method: 30 adult females were divided into the PFPS (age: 23.13±2.77 yrs; height: 160.97±3.79 cm, weight: 51.19±4.86 kg) and normal group (age: 22.80±2.54 yrs, height: 164.40±5.77 cm, weight: 56.14±8.16 kg), with 15 subjects in each group. To examine the knee isokinetic peak strength, kinematics and kinetics in peak vertical ground reaction force during drop landing. Results: The knee peak torque (Nm) and relative strength (%) were significantly weaker PFPS group than normal group. In addition, PFPS group had significantly greater hip flexion angle (°) than normal group. Moreover, normal group had significantly greater moment of hip abduction, hip internal rotation, and left ankle eversion than PFPS group, and PFPS group had significantly greater moment of knee internal rotation. Finally, there was significant differences between the groups at anteroposterior center of pressure. Conclusion: The PFPS patients had weakened knee strength, and which can result in an unstable landing pattern and cause of more stress in the knee joints despite to effort of reduce vertical ground reaction force.

Effects of Different Frequency on Muscle Function of the Thigh in Patients with Degenerative Knee Arthritis during the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES 치료 시 자극 주파수 차이가 퇴행성 슬관절염 환자의 대퇴근 기능에 미치는 영향 )

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different frequency on muscle function of the thigh in patients with degenerative knee arthritis during the functional electrical stimulation (FES). Method: For this study, 16 male participants over 65 who patients with degenerative knee arthritis were recruited as research participants. In this research, isokinetic muscular function, EMG, and joint position sensation were performed after FES treatment was applied for three conditions (FES 20, FES 50, and Without FES). For each dependent variable, one-way ANOVA with repeated measures was to determine whether there were significant differences among three different conditions (p<.05). When a significant difference was found, post hoc analyses were performed by using the contrast procedure. Results: When compared to FES 50 and without FES, FES 20 causes significant increase in isometric knee extension strength. No significant differences were found in EMG values across different EMS conditions. Conclusion: The present study examined isokinetic muscular function, EMG, and joint position sensation in order to investigate the effects of different frequency muscle function of knee extensors during the functional electrical stimulation. The results of this study showed that FES with 20 Hz frequency had positive effect on knee extensor. Based on the findings of the present study, FES with lower frequency may help the performer to focus on developing strength in knee extensor muscles.

  • The purpose of this review was to introduce a new training concept as pneumatic training method and how to apply the principles. Uses the new resistance, especially air powered that invisible, intangible, along with training on how to contribute to broadening their horizons, while attempts have been passed. Provide transition training methods in accordance with the trend of the times, and why these changes may be in the form of outside-free for theoretical consideration. From weight resistance, hydraulic, isokinetic exercise, and to pneumatic training why justification should apply for these training methods are presented also suggested the superiority of pneumatic training. In the near future, newly developed training method will be appear. In conclusion, it will be contribute to sports by concerning and applications to cutting edge training

Effects of 8-Week Elastic Resistance Exercise on Knee Isokinetic Rate of Velocity Development and Balance by Age

  • Ten women in their 20s and 10 women in their 50s were selected to investigate the effect of an elastic band exercise program for 8 weeks according to age on women's knee speed expression rate and balance. Knee isokinetic muscle strength measurement, single-legged standing with eyes closed, and YBT were performed 1 week before and after the exercise program. The measured data were analyzed through a mixed design two-way ANOVA, and if there was a significant difference, post hoc verification was performed using the bonferoni method. In our study, as a result of an 8-week elastic band exercise program, there was no difference in the speed development rate according to the measurement period, and the speed development rate according to age was found to be higher in people in their 50s than in their 20s. In our study, there was no difference in balance ability depending on the measurement period, and there was also no difference in balance ability depending on age. Discussing the results of our study, we found that 8 weeks of elastic band exercise cannot bring about significant changes in speed development ability and balance ability, which become more accurate with age.

Comparison of Rotational Strength in Shoulders with Anterior Instability and Normal Shoulders Using Isokinetic Testing (등속성 검사를 통한 견관절 전방 불안정 환자와 정상인의 회전력 비교)

  • Objective: It has been expected that patient with posttraumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation might have limited daily life activity because of pain and apprehension of dislocation. But there have been only a small number of investigations regarding the rotator strength in this patient. The aim of this study is to find the characteristics about rotator strength of patient with posttraumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation using an isokinetic testing. Method: We enrolled thirteen patients with posttraumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation and fifteen sex, age-matched healthy nonathletic subjects in this controlled study. All participants were male and there were no significant differences between the two groups in age, height, weight, BMI. Isokinetic internal rotator and external rotator strength was evaluated with a Biodex Isokinetic Testing machine (Biodex Medical Systems, Shirley, NY, USA), tests were performed at 60 deg/sec and 180 deg/sec for both sides. Peak torque normalized to body weight, external rotator to internal rotator ratio, total work and fatigue were calculated for each angular velocity. The association between internal rotator and external rotator strength and shoulder instability was analyzed by comparisons with a control group. Results: Any notable differences could not be found between the two groups given all data from no symptomatic left shoulder. There were no significant differences between the two groups statistically in internal rotation strength of right shoulder. However, there has been a tendency that at all angular velocities, external rotator peak torque to body weight, total work and external rotator to internal rotator ratio were significantly lower in the anterior instability group than the control group at all angular velocities. There was no substantial difference between those groups with respect to the fatigue of external rotator and internal rotator in our study. Conclusion: The prominent characteristics of posttraumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation are external rotator weakness and loss of balance with external rotator and internal rotator. Therefore selective training using this information rotator might be helpful in conservative treatment and rehabilitation.

Effect of joint mobilization on improvement of knee pain, isokinetic strength, muscle tone, muscle stiffness in an elite volleyball player with knee injury (무릎손상 엘리트 배구선수에 관절가동운동이 무릎통증, 등속성 근력, 근긴장도, 근경직 개선에 미치는 효과)

  • This case study identified the effects of joint mobilization on knee pain, isokinetic strength, muscle tone, and muscle stiffness in an elite volleyball player with a knee injury. The subject had experienced cartilage defects of the left knee joint and underwent surgery to correct the condition. The patient complained of continuous pain in the left knee joint in daily life in addition to pain during exercise. The study was conducted from August 5 to 12, 2015 and joint mobilization was applied to the left knee joint for 15 minutes once a day for 8 days. Knee pain was measured using a visual analogue scale, and the concentric peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles was measured using an isokinetic muscular strength measurement device. The muscle tone and stiffness of the rectus femoris muscle, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis on the injured side were measured using a myotonometer. All the measurements were conducted before and after the intervention. Joint mobilization was effective in reducing knee pain on the injured side, increasing the concentric peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles on both sides, and increasing the muscle stiffness of the quadriceps muscle on the injured side. Concentric peak torque of the quadriceps muscle on the injured side increased a great deal as the number of joint mobilizations was increased, largely diminishing the difference in concentric peak torque between the normal side and injured side. On the other hand, joint mobilization was ineffective in improving the hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio on the injured side. While this study suggests that joint mobilization can be an effective intervention to improve the knee pain, isokinetic strength, and muscle stiffness of elite volleyball players, it should be performed alongside training for an appropriate strength ratio.

The Effects of High-intensity Combined Training Program on Cardiorespiratory Function, Isokinetic Trunk Strength and Anaerobic Power of Canoe Athletes (고강도 복합 훈련 프로그램이 카누선수의 심폐기능, 체간 등속성 근력과 무산소성 파워에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of a 6-week high-intensity combined training program on canoe athletes' cardiorespiratory function, isokinetic trunk strength, and anaerobic power. For the purpose of this study, the high-intensity combined training program was applied to 9 high-school canoe athletes. The high-intensity combined training program consists of aerobic exercise performed 2 times a week (Tuesday and Thursday), anaerobic exercise performed 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), and flexibility exercise performed 5 times a week. The core of the high-intensity combined training program was the anaerobic training program performed with 100% weight for repetition; otherwise, the existing training method was divided into the percentage (%) of the 1RM. The aerobic exercise and the gym ball exercise are performed subsidiarily. Results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in height and muscle mass, whereas there was no statistically significant difference in weight, body fat percentage, and BMI followed by the high-intensity combined training program. There were statistically significant differences in maximum oxygen uptake and total exercise time. The angular velocity of 30°/sec showed a statistically significant difference in the peak torque item of flexors only. Also, the angular velocity of 120°/sec showed a statistically significant difference in the total work item of extensors only; however, there was no statistically significant difference in all the items of peak power, average power, and peak drop. In conclusion, it seems that the high-intensity combined training program may be applied as a training program for enhancing canoe athletes' performance. For further studies, more than 6 weeks training program with more participants would show improved results of isokinetic strength and anaerobic power in athlets.

Isikinetic evaluation of the knee flexors and extensors on muscle strength in 100 men and women aged 21 - 68yr (21-68세 남녀 100명의 슬관절 굴근과 신근의 근력에 대한 등속성 평가)

  • The purpose of the present study was to the investigate the effect of aging in men and women on muscle strength of knee extensor and flexors by using the cybex 6000 isokinetic dynamometer. A total of 100 volunteers participated in this study and were divided into five groups according to their chronological age as follows: 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 10 men and 10 women in each decade respectively. Isokinetic ($60^{\circ}{\cdot}s-l$) knee extensor and flexor peak torque, peak torque to body weight ratio, opposing muscles(flexor/extensor) peak torque ratio, deficit of peak torque between dominant and non-dominant were measured. The results obtained were as follows: 1) In men, While the aged increased. the peak torque of the knee flexor and extensor statistically sig nificant decreased in the dominant and non-dominant side. 2) In women, Statistically significant difference of knee extensor peak torque was found as the aged increased in the dominant and non-dominant side, but significant difference of knee flexor peak torque did not that. 3) In men, No significant difference in the peak torque of knee flexor to body weight ratio was found as the aged increased in the non-dominant side, but statistically significant difference in the peak torque of knee flexor to body weight weight ratio was found as the aged increased in the dominant side. 4) In women. No significant difference in the peak torque of knee flexor to body weight ratio was found as the aged increased in the dominant side, but statistically significant difference in the peak torque of knee flexor to body weight ratio was found as the aged increased in the non-dominant side. 5) In men and women, While the aged increased, statistically significant difference was found the dominant and non-dominant side in the peak torque of knee extensor to body weight ratio. 6) Peak torque of hamstring to quadriceps ratio of dominant and non-dominant side in men and women were not significantly different as the age increases. 7) Mean deficit of peak torque between dominant and non-dominant side in men and women were not significantly different as the age increases. From these results we conclude a proper exercise program is need before 50s decade to preserve in muscle strength of knee flexors and extensors.

Effects of Energy System Contribution on Isokinetic Muscle Strength in Various Sport Events Athletes (무산소, 유산소 운동종목별 엘리트선수의 등속성 근기능에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to compare the muscle strength, muscle power, and H/Q ratio according to energy system contribution in athletes participating in various sports. Subjects of the study were assigned into an Anaerobic Exercise Group (AEG, n=60; Short-Distance, Weight Lifting, Jumping, Throwing, Bowling, Golf) and an Endurance Exercise Group (EEG, n=60; Modern Pentathlon, Field Hockey, Handball, Cycle, Boxing, Rowing) groups. Isokinetic peak torque/body weight% and flexor/extensor ratio at 60, 180 deg/sec of knee extension and flexion were measured using an cybex 770. Data analysis was conducted using an independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. Based on the results of this study, there was higher extension, flexion strength and flexion power in the AEG than the EEG (p<0.05). We also confirmed higher muscle strength and muscle power in short distance and jumping athletes than other athletes participating in other events (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference within the endurance exercise group. The HS ratio was within a stable range of 50% to 60% in all events. Collectively, the outcomes of this study indicate that routine physiological and performance testing can provide measurable benefits for elite athletes and their coaches.
