Tight sportswear and physiological function - Effect on muscle strength and EMG activity -

  • It has been reported that tight sportswear could have complicated influence on physiological function of human body. The purpose of this present study was to investigate the effect of wearing gradient compression tights (GCT) on muscle strength and EMG activity during repeated isokinetic muscle contractions. Four healthy male undergraduate students performed maximal voluntary isokinetic concentric muscle contractions on biomechanical test and training systems with GCT and loose pants as control (Cont) respectively. During each test, the peak torque of extensor and flexor contractions and the surface electromyography (sEMG) of the rectus femoris and medial gastrocnemius was recorded simultaneously, the peak torque was recorded as an indicator of muscle strength, and the average amplitude and mean power frequency of sEMG were calculated as indicators of EMG activity. The results showed that: the peak torque decreased gradually during continuous muscle contractions both when the Cont and GCT were worn, average sEMG and mean power frequency declined along with the repetitions of muscle contractions for both wearing conditions, and the change tendency was consistence with that of peak torque. There was no obvious difference between the peak torque recorded wearing the Cont or wearing GCT, but when GCT were worn, average sEMG was lower and mean power frequency was higher than the Cont condition. In 24 samples obtained from four subjects, 80% of results showed the same trend. So we could make a conclusion that wearing GCT had no obvious effect on the improvement of muscle strength, but it would affect the EMG activity positivly.

재활프로그램이 슬관절 골관절염 환자의 등속성 근력에 미치는 영향 (The effects on rehabilitative program on isokinetic muscle power of patients with osteoarthritis of Knee joint)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigerate the changes of isokinetic muscular function in elderly people who have been to take from osteoarthritis in both knee joints after 36 weeks' rehabilitative therapy programs. In this study the subjects were 20 women residing in S-Tower(n=10) and H-welfare Town(n=10) respectively. The rehabilitative group(equal to experimental group) had taken part in exercise program 5 days per week. And then was performed by warm up, workout(involving aerobic exercise and weight training), cool down, physical therapy(cryotherapy, TENS, ultrasound). Also its programs were classified in conditioning phase($0{\sim}12$ weeks), improvement phase($13{\sim}24$ weeks), and maintenance phase($25{\sim}36$ weeks) respectively. The results of inspections were as followed: In the isokinetic muscular function, there were significant differences in right leg's flexor and extensor in $60^{\circ}$/sec. And there were significant differences in right leg's flexor and left leg's extensor in $180^{\circ}$/sec. At last, there were significant differences in right leg's flexor and left leg's extensor in $240^{\circ}$/sec. In other words, the rehabilitative programs for 36 weeks could increase the muscular function in elderly with OA. In conclusion, the rehabilitative programs of this paper has shown the positive results, which involved in the muscular function variables in elderly people with OA in both knee.

배구선수들의 극하근 근위축이 어깨 관절 회전근력과 운동범위에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Atrophy of the Inpraspinatus on Strength and ROM in Shoulder Joint of Male Volleyball Players)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 극하근 근위축이 배구선수들의 등속성 최대토크와 운동범위에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자, 극하근의 근위축 소견이 있는 선수 3명, 근위축 소견이 없는 선수 5명을 대상으로 등속성 근력측정기기인 Biodex와 동작분석기기 Simi-Motion을 이용하여 측정분석 하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 극하근의 근위축이 있는 그룹과 없는 그룹 사이에 어깨 관절의 외회전 등속성 최대토크, 내회전에 대한 외회전 등속성 최대토크 비율 그리고 내회전 회전 운동범위가 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 배구선수들의 극하근의 근위축을 예방하기 위해서는 어깨 관절의 기능을 고려한 외회전근의 근력강화 훈련이 중점적으로 시행되어야 하며, 이와 더불어 어깨 관절 후부 조직에 대한 유연성 훈련도 병행되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.

등속성 운동기를 이용한 사상체질별 요부 굴곡 및 신전근의 근력 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Flexor-Extensor Muscle Strength of the Trunk with Isokinetic Equipment according to Sasang Constitution)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate flexor-extensor muscle strength of trunk according to Sasang constitution. Methods : This study was carried out with the data from comprehensive medical testing. People were performed Trunk Extension Flexion(TEF) Program of CYBEX NORM System and QSCC(Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification) II test. And then we made three groups according to Sasang constitution and analyzed isokinetic strength on the TEF. Results : 1. A significant difference(Taeumin>Soeumin>Soyangin) was found in flexor muscle peak torque(PT) of trunk according to Sasang constitution(P<0.05). 2. A significant difference was not found in flexor muscle peak torque%body weight (PT%BW) of trunk according to Sasang constitution. 3. A significant difference(Taeumin>Soeumin>Soyangin) was found in extensor muscle peak torque(PT) of trunk according to Sasang constitution(P<0.05). 4. A significant difference(Soeumin>Taeumin>Soyangin) was found in extensor muscle peak torque%body weight(PT%BW) of trunk according to Sasang constitution(P<0.05). Conclusions : There is a significant difference in isokinetic strength on the TEF according to Sasang constitution.

무용전공 여대생들의 등속성 최대우력에 영향을 미치는 인체계측적 요인 (The Anthropometric Factors in Isokinetic Peak Torque of Young Female Dancers)

  • Dance movements consist of combinations of movements such as jumping, rotation, maintaining balance, leg lifts, and plantar flexion with toe shoes. Dance movements require great muscle strength of lower extremities as well as muscular endurance. The purposes of this study were to investigate correlation between the anthropometric variables and the peak torque in young female dancers and to identify variables that affect isokinetic peak torque. Twenty-six female dancers ($19.7{\pm}1.2$ years of age) performed concentric maximum force efforts on the knee extensors and flexors at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$, the ankle plantar flexors (PF) and dorsiflexors (DF) at $30^{\circ}/sec$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$. Antropometric variables such as age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), thigh girth, calf girth and duration of dance training were measured. To identify antropometric variables related to muscle strength, Pearson correlations were computed and a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed. Pearson correlation coefficients of Knee extensor at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$ revealed moderate positive associations with BMI and thigh girth. Pearson correlation coefficients of ankle PF revealed low-to-moderate positive associations with height. Ankle DF also revealed moderate positive associations with BMI and calf girth. The main predictor variables of knee extensor at 60/sec, were stepwise multiple regression, age, height, thigh and girth.

Comparing the effectiveness of ultrasound guided versus blind genicular nerve block on pain, muscle strength with isokinetic device, physical function and quality of life in chronic knee osteoarthritis: a prospective randomized controlled study

  • Background: The genicular nerve block (GNB) is demonstrated from several reports to alleviate pain and improve knee functionality in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis (OA). Ultrasound (US)-guided GNB has been the most used imaging method. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of US-guided versus blind GNB in the treatment of knee OA. Methods: This prospective, randomized clinical trial included patients with knee OA based on American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria. The patients were evaluated for clinical and dynamometer parameters at the baseline, 4 weeks after treatment, and 12 weeks after treatment. The patients underwent blind injection or US-guided injection. Results: When compared with the baseline, both groups showed significant improvement in pain, physical function, and quality of life parameters. Significant differences were observed between the groups for clinical parameters (30-second chair stand test, 6-minute walk test) in favor of the US-guided group. On the other hand, blind injection was more significantly effective on some parameters of the Nottingham Health Profile. There wasn't any significant improvement in isokinetic muscle strength for either group. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that both US-guided and blind GNB, in the treatment of knee OA, were effective in reducing symptoms and improving physical function. GNB wasn't an effective treatment for isokinetic muscle function. US-guided injections may yield more effective clinical results than blind injections.

3주간의 고지대 스키훈련이 크로스컨트리 스키 선수의 등속성 근기능에 미치는 영향 (The effect of 3 weeks high altitude skiing training on isokinetic muscle function of cross-country skierst)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 3주간의 고지대 스키 트레이닝이 크로스컨트리 스키 선수의 근기능에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 향후 크로스컨트리 스키 선수들의 근기능 향상 및 과학적 훈련프로그램 구성을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하는데 있다. 연구대상자는 크로스컨트리 스키 남자 대학 선수 6명을 대상으로 실시하였으며, 주기별과 고지대 트레이닝이 크로스컨트리 스키 선수들에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위하여 일반선형모델 반복측정(General Linear Model ANOVA with repeated measure)과 대응표본 t 검정(Paired Samples t-test)을 적용하여 분석하였다. 고지대 스키 트레이닝을 3주간 실시한 결과 신체조성은 변화가 나타나지 않았지만, 어깨관절, 허리관절, 무릎관절, 발목관절의 등속성 근기능이 감소되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 SP기간과 같은 스키 트레이닝 기간 중에도 지속적인 근력훈련을 실시하여야 할 것으로 사료되면 이에 대한 추가 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

필라테스 운동이 여중생의 요통과 체간 등속성 근력 및 평형성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Pilates Exercises on Isokinetic Trunk Strength and Balance in Female Middle School Students with Lumbago)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of performing Pilates exercises for eight weeks on the isokinetic trunk strength and balance of female middle school students with lumbago. Methods: Twenty-four female students who met the test requirements were recruited and randomly divided into a control group (CG, n = 16) and a Pilates exercise group (Pilates group; PG, n = 8). The PG performed a Pilates program, which consisted of lumbar muscle strengthening exercises, for 60 minutes three times a week for eight weeks. Data analysis was conducted by two-way repeated ANOVA, and a Bonferroni test was carried out when significant differences appeared. The alpha level was set at 0.05. Results: Following the experimental treatment, the PG showed an increased trunk flexion peak torque of 17% and 13% at angular velocities of 180°/sec and 300°/sec, respectively. The intergroup comparison showed no significant difference at pre-measurement, while the PG increased about 31% (180°/sec) and 15% (300°/sec) higher than the control group at post-measurement. Following the experimental treatment, the PG showed an increased trunk extensor peak torque of approximately 29% and 21% at angular velocities of 180°/sec and 300°/sec, respectively. The intergroup comparison showed no significant difference at pre-measurement, while the PG increased approximately 27% (180°/sec) and 15% (300°/sec) higher than the control group at post-measurement. Both the CG and the PG showed a 20% and 50% decrease in pain index after the experimental treatment, respectively. After the experimental treatment, the PG had about 50% lower pain than the CG. The average error rate of static balance in the PG reduced by 19% from 3.28±0.45 to 2.65±0.36, confirming a significant improvement. Conclusion: Regular Pilates exercise for eight weeks improved the isokinetic trunk muscle strength of female middle school students with lumbago and relieved their pain. Pilates was also shown to be effective in improving balance.

초등학교 남자 축구선수들의 12주간 근파워 및 민첩성 트레이닝이 체력요인, 등속성 근기능에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of 12-week Weight Training with Muscle Strength, Agility Training on Physical Fitness Factors and Isokinetic Muscle Function in of Elementary School Male Soccer Players)

  • 본 연구에서는 초등학교 남자 축구선수들을 대상으로 12주간 근파워 및 민첩성 트레이닝이 체력요인과 등속성근기능에 미치는 효과를 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 초등학교 남자 축구선수 12명을 대상으로 근파워와 민첩성 트레이닝 프로그램 6개를 구성하여 12주간 주 3회 실시하였다. 근파워, 민첩성 트레이닝 전과 후 운동에 대한 체력요인들을 측정하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 근파워의 제자리멀리뛰기에서는 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.001). 둘째, 근파워의 제자리높이뛰기에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.05). 셋째, 민첩성의 사이드스텝에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.01). 이상의 결과로 12주간의 근파워 민첩성 트레이닝은 초등학교 남자 축구선수들의 순발력과 민첩성 향상에 긍정적 효과를 기대할 수 있으며, 상해 예방과 경기력 향상을 위한 트레이닝 기초 자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Effects of branched-chain amino acid supplement on knee peak torque and indicators of muscle damage following isokinetic exercise-induced delayed onset muscle soreness

  • [Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the effects of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) by analyzing the maximum muscle strength and indicators of muscle damage. [Methods] Twelve men with majors in physical education were assigned to the BCAA group and placebo group in a double-blinded design, and repeated measurements were conducted. DOMS was induced with an isokinetic exercise. Following BCAA administration, the changes in the knee extension peak torque, flexion peak torque, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentrations were analyzed. The maximum knee muscle strength was measured at the baseline (pre-D0) following BCAA administration for 5 days before exercise (-D5, -4D, -3D, -2D, -1D). In contrast, the post-treatment measurements (D3) were recorded after BCAA administration for 3 days (post-D0, D1, D2). Blood samples were obtained before (pre-D0), immediately after (post-D0), 24 h (D1), 48 h (D2), and 72 h (D3) after the exercise to analyze the indicators of muscle strength. BCAA was administered twice daily for 8 days (5 days and 3 days before inducing DOMS and during the experimental period, respectively). [Results] There was no difference in the flexion peak torque between the groups. However, the BCAA group showed a significantly higher extension peak torque at D3 (second isokinetic exercise), compared to the placebo group (p<.05). There was no difference in AST changes between the groups. Nonetheless, the CK and LDH were significantly reduced in the BCAA group, compared to the placebo group. There was no correlation between the extension peak torque and flexion peak torque. However, the CK and LDH increased proportionately in DOMS. Moreover, their concentrations significantly increased with a decreasing peak torque (p<.01). [Conclusion] An exercise-induced DOMS results in a decrease in the peak torque and a proportional increase in the CK and LDH concentrations. Moreover, the administration of BCAA inhibits the reduction of the extension peak torque and elevation of CK and LDH concentrations. Therefore, BCAA might be administered as a supplement to maintain the muscle strength and prevent muscle damage during vigorous exercises that may induce DOMS in sports settings.
