With Increasing importance of electroless nickel plating technology in many fields such as electronic and automobile industries, the treatment of the spent baths is becoming a serious problem. These spent baths contain iron and zinc as impurities, organic acids as complexing reagents, and phosphonate ions as oxidized species of tile reducing reagent. as well as several grams per liter of nickel. The spent baths are currently treated by conventional precipitation method. but a mettled with no sludge generation is desired. This work aims at establishing a recycling process of nickel from tile spent baths using solvent extraction. Extraction behaviors of nickel. iron. and zinc in various 쇼pes of real spent baths are investigated as a function of pH using LIX841, di (2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), and PC88A as tile extractants. Nickel is extracted by LIX84I at the equilibrium pH of more than 6 with high efficiency. For the weakly acid baths. iron and zinc are extracted by D2EHPA or PC88A without adjusting the pH of the baths leaving nickel in the aqueous phase. Stripping of nickel from LIX84I with sulfuric acid is also investigated. It is shown that concentrated nickel sulfate solution (> 100 ㎏-Ni/㎥) is obtained. This solution can be reused in the electroless plating process. Based on these findings, flow sheets for recovering nickel from the spent baths are proposed.
The anodic dissolution of electrodeposited iron group elements (Fe, Co, Ni) were studied in phthalate buffer solution. The pH dependence of the corrosion potential, the corrosion current and Tafel slope was measured for each element. Based on the electrochemical parameters including Tafel slopes, we proposed the redox mechanism of the corrosion and the passivation. The adsorption of various phthalate species on the electrodeposited iron group elements seemed to be affected the corrosion mechanisms.
In this study, we prepared Fe-activated carbon fiber(ACF)/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium (VI) n-butoxide (TNB) as the titanium source for ACF pre-treated with iron compounds through the impregnation method. In terms of textural surface properties, the composites demonstrate a slight decrease in the BET surface area of the samples and an increase in the amount of iron compounds treated. The surface morphology of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites was characterized by means of SEM. The composites have a porous texture with homogenous compositions of Fe and titanium dioxide distributed on the sample surfaces. The phase formation and structural transition of the iron compounds and titanium dioxide were observed in X-ray diffraction patterns of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. The chemical composition of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites, which was investigated with EDX shows strong peaks for the C, O, Fe and Ti elements. The photo degradation results confirm that the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites show excellent removal activity for the COD in piggery waste due to photocatalysis of the supported $TiO_2$, radical reaction by Fe species, and the adsorptivity and absorptivity of ACF.
Objective: The objective was to evaluate the impact of different forms of iron including myoglobin, hemin, and ferric chloride on the quality of chicken breast meat. Methods: Chicken breast muscles were subjected to 1, 2, 3 mg/mL of FeCl3, myoglobin and hemin treatment respectively, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde, meat color, tenderness, water holding capacity and morphology of meat was evaluated. Results: Hemin was found to produce more ROS and induce greater extent of lipid oxidation than myoglobin and ferric chloride. However, it showed that hemin could significantly increase the redness and decrease the lightness of the muscle. Hemin was also shown to be prominent in improving water holding capacity of meat, maintaining a relatively higher level of the immobilized water from low-field nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Morphology observation by hematoxylin-eosin staining further confirmed the results that hemin preserved the integrity of the muscle. Conclusion: The results indicated that hemin may have economic benefit for the industry based on its advantage in improving water holding capacity and quality of meat.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is recognized to be carcinogenic and toxic and registered as a contaminant in many drinking water regulations. It occurs naturally and is also produced by industrial processes. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has been a central topic for chromium remediation since Cr(III) is less toxic and less mobile. In this study, fermentative Fe(III)-reducing bacterial strains (Cellu-2a, Cellu-5a, and Cellu-5b) were isolated from a groundwater sample and were phylogenetically related to species of Cellulomonas by 16S rRNA gene analysis. One selected strain, Cellu-2a showed its capacity of reduction of both soluble iron (ferric citrate) and solid iron (hydrous ferric oxide, HFO), as well as aqueous Cr(VI). The strain Cellu-2a was able to reduce 15 μM Cr(VI) directly with glucose or sucrose as a sole carbon source under the anaerobic condition and indirectly with one of the substrates and HFO in the same incubations. The heterogeneous reduction of Cr(VI) by the surface-associated reduced iron from HFO by Cellu-2a likely assisted the Cr(VI) reduction. Fermentative features such as large-scale cell growth may impose advantages on the application of bacterial Cr(VI) reduction over anaerobic respiratory reduction.
Two species belonging to two genera of the Laboulbeniales were collected from species of the Dermaptera of Korea. Among these species, Dimeromyces anisolabis Thaxter parasitic on Anisolabis maritima (Bonelli) is new to Korea and Filariomyces forficulae Shanor parasitic on Labidura riparia japonica (do Haan) was collected newly Iron Jeju island. These specimens were preserved in Mycologlcal Laboratory, Division of Science Education, College of Education, Chosun University.

In a redox transition zone, geochemical reactions are facilitated by active bacteria that mediate reactions involving electrons, and arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) cycles are the major electron transfer reactions occurring at such a site. In this study, the effect of repetitive redox changes on soil bacterial community in As-contaminated soil was investigated. The results revealed that bacterial community changed actively in response to redox changes, and bacterial diversity gradually decreased as the cycle repeated. Proportion of strict aerobes and anaerobes decreased, while microaerophilic species such as Azospirillum oryzae group became the predominant species, accounting for 72.7% of the total counts after four weeks of incubation. Bacterial species capable of reducing Fe or As (e.g., Clostridium, Desulfitobacterium) belonging to diverse phylogenetic groups were detected. Indices representing richness (i.e., Chao 1) and phylogenetic diversity decreased from 1,868 and 1,926 to 848 and 1,121, respectively. Principle component analysis suggests that repetitive redox fluctuation, rather than oxic or anoxic status itself, is an important factor in determining the change of soil bacterial community, which in turn affects the cycling of As and Fe in redox transition zones.

The advanced oxidation treatment using persulfate and zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been evaluated as a very effective technology for remediation of soil and groundwater contamination. However, the high rate of the initial reaction of persulfate with ZVI causes over-consumption of an injected persulfate, and the excessively generated active species show a low transfer rate to the target pollutant. In this study, ZVI was modified using selenium with very low reactivity in the water environment with the aim of controlling the persulfate activation rate by controlling the reactivity of ZVI. Selenium-modified ZVI (Se/ZVI) was confirmed to have a selenium coating on the surface through SEM/EDS analysis, and low reductive reactivity to trichlroethylene (TCE) was observed. As a result of inducing the persulfate activation using the synthesized Se/ZVI, the persulfated consumption rate was greatly reduced, and the decomposition rate of the model contaminant, anisole, was also reduced in proportion. However, the final decomposition efficiency was rather increased, which seems to be the result of preventing persulfate over-consumption. This is because the transfer efficiency of the active species (SO4-∙) of persulfate to the target contaminant has been improved. Selenium on the surface of Se/ZVI was not significantly dissolved even under oxidation conditions by persulfate, and most of it was present in the form of Se/ZVI. It was confirmed that the persulfate activation rate could be controlled by controlling the reactivity of ZVI, which could greatly contribute to the improvement of the persulfate oxidation efficiency.
The antioxidant activity of hawthorn fruit (Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge var. typica Schneider) extracts was investigated by several in vitro antioxidants properties, including DPPH free radical scavenging activity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, reducing power activity, iron-chelating capacity and nitrite scavenging activity. Among the extracts in this study, the 70% EtOH extract showed higher antioxidant activity than the others. The $IC_{50}$ value of DPPH free radical scavenging activity was $99.26\;{\mu}g/mL$. Furthermore, the 70% EtOH extract also showed significantly high total phenolic and flavonoids contents and reducing power activity. However, the MeOH extract exhibited stronger effects on hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, iron-chelating capacity and nitrite scavenging activity. All the results implicated that, the hawthorn fruit may has the available potential to be utilize as a potential source of natural antioxidant.
As IR-sensor for detecting pollution material, the iron silicide has a fit band gap, high physicochemical stability at high temperature and good acid resistance. The growing film was formed with the Fe-Si bond and the organic compound because plasma resolved the injected precursors into various active species. In the Raman scattering spectrum, the Fe-Si vibration mode showed at 250 {TEX}$cm^{-1}${/TEX}. The FT-IR peak indicated that the various organic compounds were deposited on the films. The iron silicide was epitaxially grown to β-phase by the high energy of plasma. The lattice structure of films had [220]/[202] and [115]. The thickness of the films increased with the flow rate of silane. But rf-power increased with decreasing the thickness. The optical gap energy and the band gap were shown about 3.8 eV and 1.182∼1.194 eV. The band gap linearly increased and the formula was below: {TEX}$E_g^{dir}${/TEX}= 8.611×{TEX}$10^{-3}N_{D}${/TEX}+1.1775
