Three different white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their transformation behavior of matrix structures in heat-treated conditions. The specimens were produced using a 15kg-capacity high frequency induction furnace. Melts were super-heated to $1600^{\circ}C$, and poured at $1550^{\circ}C$ into Y-block pepset molds. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides and matrix structures : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 1), 3%C-10%V-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2) and 3%C-17%Cr-3%V(alloy No. 3). The heat-treatments were conducted as follows: frist of all, as-cast specimens were homogenized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 5h under the vacuum atmosphere. Then, they were austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2h and followed by air-hardening in air. The air-hardened specimens were tempered at $300^{\circ}C$ for 3h. The observation of morphology of the matrix structures was carried out in the states of as-cast(AS), air-hardened(AHF) and tempered(AHFT). The matrix structures of each alloy were almost fully pearlitic in the as-cast state but it was transformed to martensite, tempered martensite and retained austenite by the heat-treatments such as air-hardening and tempering.

Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the emissions characteristics of total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gaseous pollutants (SOx, NOx) in iron and steel manufacturing facilities in order to investigate emissions factors suitable for domestic conditions. Methods: Total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gas phase materials were investigated at the outlet of electric arc furnace facilities using a cyclone sampling machine and a gas analyzer. Results: The concentrations of TPM ranged from 1.64 to 3.14 mg/Sm3 and the average was 2.47 mg/Sm3. Particulate matter 10 (PM10) averaged 1.49 mg/Sm3 with a range of 0.92 to 1.99 mg/Sm3, and the resulting ratio of PM10 to TPM was around 60 percent. PM2.5/PM10 ranged from 33.7 to 47.9% and averaged 41.6%. Sulfur oxides (SOx) were not detected, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) averaged 6.8 ppm in the range of 5.50 to 8.67 ppm. TPM emission coefficients per product output were in the range of 0.60 to 1.26 g/kg, 0.13 to 0.79 g/kg for PM10 and 0.12 to 0.36 g/kg for PM2.5, and showed many differences from the emissions coefficients previously announced. An emissions coefficient for NOx is not currently included in the domestic notices, but the results were calculated to be 0.42 g/kg per product output. Conclusions: Investigation and research on emissions coefficients that can reflect the characteristics of various facilities in Korea should be conducted continuously, and the determination and application of unique emissions coefficients that are more suitable for domestic conditions are needed.
The relationship between grain size and number of magnetic domain walls for tertiary recrystallized ultra thin 3 % Si-Fe strips was investigated. It was found that the strips with different grain size can be produced by controlling the inserting speed of sample in annealing furnace. Though grain size of the stirip became smaller than 1mm, $B_{8}$ of high value above 1.95T was obtained. But $H_{c}$ increased with decaying the grain size. The magnetic domains and losses of the ultra thin grain oriented silicon steel with smaller grian size were observed. The eddy current losses of the strips were decreased with decreasing the grain size in high frequency range because strips with smaller grain have narrower magnetic domain wall spacings. But Hysteresis losses of the strips with smaller grain have high value in low frequency range. Therefore the iron loss of ultra thin grain oriented silicon steel could be controlled by the grain size. It was clarified that the minumum tatal loses depended on the exciting frequency and grain size.
Since it was developed by Joseph Aspdin, cement has been a common construction materials up to the present time. However, there are trace constituents in cement clinker. One of the trace constituents included in cement clinker, chromium, has become prominent and highly noticed lately as a social issue both inside and outside of this country because it affects the human body negatively. The aim of the present study was to investigate the concentration of water-soluble hexavalent chromium in cement clinker by using industrial by-products. For that reason, raw materials were prepared to add different $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Fe_2O_3$ sources. After the raw materials such as the limestone, the sand and the clay, iron ore was pulverized and mixed, and the raw meal was burnt at about $1450^{\circ}C$ in a furnace with an oxidizing atmosphere. The part in the raw materials of the clinker was substituted with slag, sludge, etc. and this was used to manufacturing cement clinker. To investigate the water-soluble hexavalent chromium content in clinker, raw meal was prepared by changing the modulus, the type, and the content of clinker materials and tested concentrations of hexavalent chromium in the clinkers. To determine $Cr^{+6}$ formation of the clinker, tests were done with raw meals adding chromium by using different industrial by-products. Consequently because the chromium was to be included in the raw materials of the clinker, production of Portland cement clinker was included with the chromium. Also, the chromium was converted into hexavalent chromium in the burning process.
The greenhouse hulk curing and drying system utilizing the direct solar energy was tested to see how much fuel could be saved for curing flue-cured tobacco at the Daegu Experiment Station, Korea Tobacco Research Institute (North latitute: 35$^{\circ}$49'), in 1979. The structure consists of transparent fiberglass exterior, polyurethan boards covered with galvanized iron as the heat absorbers and insulation boards, air duct in which the air is introduced to the furnace room of bulk curing barn, and gravel heat storage system. All exterior surface of heat absorbers, air duct, and gravels were coated with black paint. The air temperature and total radiation were 20.5 to 35.5$^{\circ}C$ and 1004.2 to 1436.2 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ during the 3 replicated curing tests, respectively. The greenhouse bulk curing and drying system was able to cut fuel consumption by 25 percent compared with the conventional bulk curing barn. The maximum temperatures for the top absorber and the inlet air of the system were 89$^{\circ}C$ and 64$^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the average temperature of inlet air was higher than that of conventional one by 18$^{\circ}C$.
In order to investigate the microstructural morphology of the sulfide expected from the Fe-FeS phase diagram, a vacuum-sealed quartz tube where pure iron (99.9%) and sulfur (99.99%) powders were charged was heated upto $1000^{\circ}C$ in the electric resistance furnace, held for 96 hours and quenched in cold water and then, rod specimen was produced. Compositional difference of the sulfur between upper and lower parts of the rod was 7.5wt.% and segregation of the sulfur was gradually increased from the lower part to the upper one of the rod. The rod specimen was divided into three parts by the microstructural morphology of the sulfide. The upper part of the rod specimen revealed single phase FeS intermetallic. In the middle part of the specimen, hyper-eutectic microstructure where primary FeS was precipitated first and then, eutectic of $\alpha$-Fe and FeS was formed in the inter-dendritic region of the FeS. Especially, hypo-eutectic microstructure was appeared in the lower part of the specimen. After primary dendrite of $\alpha$-Fe solidified, FeS dendrite which included small amount of $\alpha$-Fe and FeS eutectic in the inter-dendritic region was formed.
In a study of the optimum operational condition for a melting decontamination, the effects of the basicity, slag type and slag composition on the distribution of depleted uranium were investigated for radioactively contaminated metallic wastes of iron-based metals such as stainless steel (SUS 304L) in a direct current graphite arc furnace. Most of the depleted uranium was easily moved into the slag from the radioactive metal waste. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was influenced by the amount of added slag former and the slag basicity. The composition of the slag former used to capture contaminants such as depleted uranium during the melt decontamination process generally consists of silica ($SiO_2$), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$). Furthermore, calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$), magnesium oxide (MgO), and ferric oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) were added to increase the slag fluidity and oxidative potential. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was increased as the amount of slag former was increased. Up to 97% of the depleted uranium was captured between the ingot phase and the slag phase. The partitioning ratio of the uranium was considerably dependent on the basicity and composition of the slag. The optimum condition for the removal of the depleted uranium was a basicity level of about 1.5. The partitioning ratio of uranium was high, exceeding $5.5{\times}10^3$. The slag formers containing calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$) and a high amount of silica proved to be more effective for a melt decontamination of stainless steel wastes contaminated with depleted uranium.

In this study, effects of micropores on the freezing-thawing resistance of high volume slag concrete are reviewed. Concrete was made with slag which contains the ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) and the pig iron preliminary treatment slag(PS) by replacing 0, 40, 70 %, then compressive strength, freezing-thawing resistance, micropores were reviewed. Also, specified design strength, target air contents were set. Deterioration was induced by using 14-day-age specimen which has low compressive strength for evaluating deterioration by freeze-thawing action. As results of the experiment, despite of specified design strength which has been set similarly and ensured target air contents, the pore size distribution of the concrete showed different results. Micropores in GGBS70 specimen have small amount of water which is likely to freeze because there is small amount of pore volume of 10~100 nm size at 0 cycle which has not been influenced by freezing-thawing. For these reasons, it was confirmed that the freezing-thawing resistance performance of GGBS70 is significantly superior than other specimens because relatively small expansion pressure is generated compared to the other specimens.

In order to investigate stabilization effect and sustainability on As-contaminated farmland soils which were affected the abandoned mine site and stabilized by zerovalent iron(ZVI) and industrial by-products, batch-scale and pilot-scale tests were carried out. In batch tests, ZVI and industrial by-products(blast furnace slag, steel refining slag and oyster shell powder) were used in treatment materials to reduce the As leaching. Industrial by-products were mixed with As-contaminated soils, in the ratio of 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% on the weight base of dried soil. The results of batch-scale tests was shown that the reduction of As concentration was observed in all samples and it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag were more effective than other treatment materials to stabilize As compounds. In pilot-scale tests, columns were filled with untreated soils and treated soils mixed with ZVI and steel refining slag in the same mixing ratio of 3%. Distilled water was discharged into the columns with the velocity of 0.3 pore volume/day. During the test, pH, EC, Eh and As concentration were measured in the regular term(1pore volume). after six months, pilot-scale tests were retested to investigate sustainability of treatment materials. As a result, It was shown that the leachate from control column was continuously released during the test period and its concentration was greater than $100ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which was exceeded the national regulation of water discharged to river or stream ($50ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$). On the other hand, soil treated with ZVI and steel refining slag showed that the concentrations of leachate were lower than national regulation of water discharged to river or stream. Therefore it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag could be applied to the farmland site as the alternative treatment materials.

The study is to evaluate the effect of bank protection concrete block products to streams and soils. The effect on three types of bank protection concrete blocks was evaluated.. The first type was manufactured using fly ash, and the second and third type products used fine blast furnace slag powder. The laboratory and field Experiments test results showed the pHs of 9 or less. Also, any heavy metals were not detected in the heavy metal leaching tests. Although some iron (Fe) was partially detected, it still met the water quality standards. In addition, heavy metal was detected from all blocks by the US drinking water evaluation standards method. An on-site water quality and soil contamination tests were performed at the places that the blocks were implemented in practice. The test results showed that the application of the bank protection concrete block product did not lead to the water and soil quality degradation. Therefore, it was found that the hardened bank protection concrete block product did not elute harmful substances such as heavy metals that affect water and soil quality degradation.
