  • In this presentation, a leaching experiment which is followed the pH changes(pH=4, pH=7) and the mixing rates(1%, 3%, 5%, 7%) was carried out to examine the arsenic reduction effects and the leaching characteristics on arsenic contaminated soil after stabilization treatment in which 5 materials were used as stabilization agencies, i.e. ZVI(zero valent iron), blast furnace slag, steel refining slag, quick lime, and oyster shell meal. Except for blast furnace slag, the arsenic removal rate increased as the mixing rate increases of stabilization agencies. Arsenic leaching concentration was indicated that pH=7 condition is higher than pH=4 condition. This result shows because arsenic immobilization reaction increases as pH decreases, and arsenic adsorption takes place as pH decreases.

  • In steel-making processes of iron and steel industry, the purity and quality of steel can be dependent on the amount of CO contained in the molten metal. Recently, the supersonic oxygen jet is being applied to the molten metal in the electric furnace and thus reduces the CO amount through the chemical reactions between the oxygen jet and molten metal, leading to a better quality of steel. In this application, the supersonic oxygen jet is limited in the distance over which the supersonic velocity is maintained. In order to get longer supersonic jet propagation into the molten metal, a supersonic coherent jet is suggested as one of the alternatives which are applicable to the electric furnace system. It has a flame around the conventional supersonic jet and thus the entrainment effect of the surrounding gas into the supersonic jet is reduced, leading to a longer propagation of the supersonic jet. The objective of the present study is to investigate the supersonic coherent jet flow. A computational study is carried out to solve the compressible, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The computational results of the supersonic coherent jet are compared with the conventional supersonic jet.

  • Converter has been slag produced 10 million tons per year in Japan. It is a steel making by product produced in the same way as the blast-furnace slag. Though blast-furnace slag is being used effectively as a concrete admixture, the converter stag has never been used effectively because of the expansion action of contained free lime and iron oxide. This is an important environmental problem in the steel industry. Beta-2CaOSiO$_2$(beta-C$_2$S) is contained 40 percent in converter slag, therefore it is very promising as a concrete admixture. We proposed an accelerated aging processes capable of stabilizing the converter slag in a short time. The converter slag is dipped into alkali aqueous solution after heating at low temperature. It was subsequently ground to a grain size of 75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , inner 30 percent of OPC. The properties of mortar and concrete using the blended cement were determined. As a result, it has become apparent that the expansion was reduced and long term compressive strength was increased while that at early ages was not so remarkable. The hydration exotherm rate was lower than that of the OPC.

In this regard, gasdynamics mechanism about why the combustion phenomenon surrounding the supersonic jet causes the jet core length to be longer is not yet clarified. The present study investigates the major characteristics of the supersonic coherent jet, compared with the conventional supersonic jet. A computational study is carried out to solve the compressible, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The computational results of the supersonic coherent jet are compared with the conventional supersonic jets.

  • EAF (Electric arc furnace) dust is an important secondary resource such as zinc, lead, and iron. Recycling of EAF dust is benefit to solving disposal and environmental problems caused by the heavy metals entrained in the dust. In this study, pyrometallurgical treatment technology of EAF dust reviewed for the improvement of conventional process and development of new process. The existing technologies categorized into four groups: those by rotary kiln process, rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process, shaft type process, and reduction smelting process. The product of these processes are ZnO and Fe or slag as a waste. Their mechanisms for the production of ZnO from EAF dust were carbothermic reduction and oxidation of zinc gas with air.

  • This paper estimates the structural performance of spirally confined concrete having electric arc furnace (EAF) oxidizing slag aggregates. The EAF oxidizing slag is a by-product generated from iron and steel industry. The EAF oxidizing slag have been largely put to low-value-added uses due to its expansive properties of the free-CaO and free-MgO. Recently, this problem has been solved by the advances in steelmaking technology and thereby stabilizing EAF oxidizing slag aggregate. To verify the application of the EAF oxidizing slag aggregate to the structural concrete usage, a total of 27 cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 150 mm and a height of 300 mm were cast and tested. The test parameters were aggregate type and spiral reinforcement yield strength. Experimental results showed that the structural performance of specimens with EAF oxidizing slag aggregates was equivalent to that of confined concrete with natural aggregates.

  • Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a solid waste generated by the steel-scrap recycling process. It mainly consists of zinc oxides (ZnO), alumina ($Al_2O_3$), iron oxides ($Fe_2O_3$), and silica ($SiO_2$). Here we report the preparation and characterization of blue ceramic pigments using EAFD powder as a starting material. $(Zn(EAFD),Co)Al_2O_4$ blue ceramic pigment was prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The color characteristics of the pigment obtained were compared with those of pure $CoAl_2O_4$. The new pigment was characterized using XRD, CIE-$L^*a^*b^*$ color-measurements, SEM, and EDX. The XRD analysis revealed that the $(Zn(EAFD),Co)Al_2O_4$ pigment was composed of mainly the spinel phase of $(Zn,Co)Al_2O_4$. The $Zn(EAFD)_{0.25}Co_{0.75}Al_2O_4$ pigments showed a vivid blue color with a $b^*$ value of -28.64 and a good glaze stability with a transparent glaze.

  • The purpsoe of this study was to produce domestic stamping materials; sling mass which could be used as unburned refractory for iron melt'ladle. Batch compositions were based on Belgian Ladelite; mineral compositions were composed of 84 wt% of quartz and 16 wt% of clay, and particle sizes were divided into 12 wt% of 1410/297㎛, 18wt% 297/149㎛, 20wt% of 149/74㎛, 11wt% 74/44㎛ and 39wt% 44㎛ under. The effect of variable batch compositions were also investigated such as substitution of pyrophylite or industrial grade alumina for quartz and of zircon for portion of quartz and clay, increase of clay and addition on sericite. Samples were pressed at 100kg/㎠ with 7.4wt% of water or 7.4wt% of 4 wt% PVA solution. Dried and Fired properties of samples such as linear shrinkage, apparent porosity, modulus of rupture, refractoriness and corrosion resistance to blast furnace slag were investigated. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Dried samples are shrinked, but fired at 700-1400℃ expanded. Samples fired at 700-1000℃ and 1200-1400℃ tended to expand with incresing of firing temperature, but fired at 1000-1200℃ tended to shrink with increase of firing temperature. 2. Apparent porosity of samples fired at 700℃ is increased, but fired at 1200-1400℃ decreased with increasing of firing temperature. 3. Modulus of rupture of samples fired at 700℃ is decreased, but fired at above 700℃ increased with increasment of firing temperature. 4. Dried samples with 7.4 wt% of 4 wt% PVA solution better improve modulus of rupture than with 7.4 wt% of water, but the firing strength of the sampels fired at 700-1000℃ is showed reversely. 5. In quartz-clay system, mineral phases of samples fired at above 1200℃ are consisted of α-quartz, α-cristobalite and mullite. Respectively as firing temperature was rising up, intensity of α-cristobalite and mullite is in creased. 6. Quartz-Kibushi clay system, Kimcheun quartz(substitutuion of portion of industrial grade alumina for quartz) Hampyeung clay system and pyrophyllite-clay system are better in corrosion resistance to blast furnace slag than burned pyrophyllite brick. 7. 84 wt% of pyrophyllite-16wt% of clay system is superior in modulus of rupture and corrosion resistance to blast furnace slag to 84 wt% of quartz-16 wt% of clay system.

  • Studies on ancient iron production technologies still have challenges to overcome, although there have been many results that have enabled us to understand these old technologies. The purpose of this study is to propose a suitable temperature condition for smelting experiments. The target for reconstruction is a smelting-smithing process in the ancient Jungwon area, and the experiment was designed on the basis of published research, such as archaeological evidence. Experiment A was performed at a low temperature to produce low-carbon iron, while Experiment B was conducted at a relatively high temperature to synthesize high-carbon iron. In addition, the low-carbon iron proved to be suitable for the smithing process. Moreover, aspects such as the microstructure and chemical composition of the slag and the surface condition of the furnace wall showed that the low-temperature smelting process was closer to the ancient method. It is important to mention the premise that the reconstruction of ancient technology can be achieved when the results of an experiment replicate the conditions of a real site. The results show that direct smelting, which produces low-carbon iron bloom under a low-temperature condition, should be the subject of smelting experiments concerning the iron production technologies of the ancient Jungwon area.

  • This study produced smelting slag through the reproduction of an ancient iron manufacturing technique, with the aim of facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the process by analyzing the slag components. The research suggests an interpretation method using the ratio of the subcomponents relative to the main slag components as an alternative to existing methods. We investigated the component source within the smelting furnace from which the slag is derived by developing an understanding of the tendency between slags. Based on bivariate graph and triangular coordinate data analysis, it was found that a slag can be categorized according to its components. The groups were identified as the ore slag group(centered on the ore), and the clay slag group(centered on clay and granite soil). This research determined that it is possible to estimate the components derived from the slag, depending on which group they belong to or resemble, as shown in Figure 4~7. It was found that a comprehensive understanding of the ratio between the components was more accurate than a simple analysis of the contents, for the interpretation of ancient iron manufacturing processes. This is based on the fact that a higher ratio of $TiO_2$ was detected by the components analysis, and an analysis of all the slag showed that the value of $CaO/SiO_2$ ratio was lower than 0.4, which corresponds to the reproduction experiment condition in which flux was not used.
