The aim of the present study was to determine the changes in mineral retention of broiler chicks fed diets based on wheat, sorghum or maize during the first two weeks post-hatch. The retention of five major minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and magnesium) and four trace minerals (iron, manganese, zinc and copper) was determined on days 3, 5, 7, 9 and 14 of age. The retention coefficients of individual minerals differed widely and the retention coefficients of major minerals were found to be considerably higher than those of trace minerals. Age effects were significant (p<0.05) for all minerals. In general, mineral retention coefficients were highest at day 3, declined to day 7, and remained unchanged to day 14. Decline in mineral retention with age was similar on all three diets. The cereal effect was significant (p<0.05) for several minerals, with a general tendency for the sorghum-based diet to have greater retention than maize- or wheat-based diets.
To determine contents of inorganic elements of Laccaria, the carpophores of Laccaria laccata(Fr.) Berk. et Br., Laccaria amethystina(Fr.) Berk. et Br., Laccaria tortilis(S.P. Gray) Cooke and Laccaria vinaceoavellanea Hongo were incinerated and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Total contents of determined inorganic elements(except Cd) were highst in Laccaria tortilis than the other three mushrooms, and Laccaria vinaceoavellanea, Laccaria laccata and Laccaria amethystina in that order. The four species mushrooms contained potassium, iron, zinc, sodium, copper, manganese, and calsium in that order, and the content of potassium was the highst than the other inorganic components. The content of cadmium was Laccaria tortilis, Laccaria laccata, Laccaria vinaceoavellanea and Laccaria amethystina in that order.
Experiments were performed to estimate the organic release from the aquifer soil in riverbank and/or riverbed filtration via a kinetic approach. Organic release was assumed as a reaction of first order regarding concentrations in both soil and water phases. The reaction rate constants were obtained by comparing the model predictions with the experimental data of organic release reaction and the equilibrium distribution of organic matter between water and soil phases. Results show that the organic release from the aquifer soil was not negligible under normal conditions in Korea reaching 4.7mg-COD/L-day. This indicates that manganese and iron start to be released from aquifer soil in the riverbank filtration in the middle reach of the Nakdong river if the travel time of the filtrate exceeds about 5 days. It was also seen that the COD of the soil organic matter was 0.89mg-COD/mg-OM and that 65% of the COD was BOD5.

In this study, the anti-oxidative effects and components of sprout serum were investigated. In the buds, high levels of zinc, iron and manganese were analyzed in addition to copper, magnesium, and potassium. The free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity of sprout serum was evaluated with $IC_{50}$. $IC_{50}$ of sprout serum was $58.0\;mgmL^{-1}$, and that of vitamin C was $3.7\;mgmL^{-1}$. In the test of superoxide scavenging activity of sprout serum, the activity was dependent on the concentration of serum. In this case, the $IC_{50}$ was 2.0 wt%. Cell viability was detected by using the MTT method. Cultured human fibroblast was treated with 15 mM $H_2O_2$ and cell viability was 70% in case of control. However, the effect of treating 0.5% of sprout serum was similar to that of 0.0001% of vitamin C.
Minerals are individual of the components of foods and are not produced in the body but essential for best possible health. Several essential metals are vital for the appropriate performance of various enzymes, transcriptional factors and proteins that are essential in various biochemical paths. Metals like zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) are cofactors of hundreds of enzymes. Zn is involved in the synthesis and secretion of insulin from the pancreatic ${\beta}-cells$. Chromium (Cr) increases the insulin receptors activity on target tissues, mainly in muscle cells. Insulin hormone is required to maintain the blood glucose amount in normal range. Continual increase of blood serum glucose level leads to marked chronic hyperglycemia or diabetes mellitus. Deficiency of insulin or its resistance, blood glucose level exceeds the upper limit of the common range of 126 mg/dl. Poor glucose control and diabetes changes the levels of essential trace elements such as Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, iron etc. by rising urinary excretion and their related decrease in the blood. The aim of this article to discusses the important roles of essential trace elements in particular perspective of type 2 diabetes.
Essential metabolic functions have been identified for seven macrominerals (calcirum, phosprorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur), and eight microminerals (cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc). Major functions for each of these minerals are summarized. Considerable research suggests that chromium is also essential and that it functions by facilitating insulin activity. Studies are reviewed which indicate that chromium supplementation of animal diets may: 1) increase glucose removal from blood, 2) reduce carcass fat and increase lean in nonruminants, 3) alter egg cholesterol content, and 4) enhance immunity and disease resistance in ruminants. A number of other minerals including nickel, boron, vanadium, arsenic, silicon, lithum, and lead have been reported to be essential, but specific metabolic functions have not been defined for any of these elements. Limited research in poultry suggests that boron may be of practical significance in some instances.
The effects of the alloying elements and cooling rates on the formation of phosphide eutectics of compacted vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin, molybdenum for producing pearlitic matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The liquidus phosphide eutectic was found to solidify as a pseudo-binary phosphide eutectic, but with increasing of the cooling rate non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with needle type carbide could be formed. However, the liquidus phosphide eutectic containing both phosphorus and carbide-forming boron was found to solidify always as a non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with coarse carbide, independent from the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the tiny isolated phase observed by SEM was gamma iron solid solution with phosphorus, silicon, molybdenum and the matrix containing these tiny islands was phosphide phase containing manganese and molybdenum. The addition of copper was found to decrease the tendency of forming ledeburitic carbides in the phosphide eutectic.

Free amino acids and mineral substance in radix of Polygonum cuspidatum, Polygonum elliptica, and Polygonum sachalinense were analyzed by amino acid autoanalyzer and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Gross contents of free amino acids in root of P. cuspidatum and P. elliptica are 12.99mg/g and 9.58mg/g respectively. The analysis of inorganic constituents of Polygonum sp. showed that it generally contains copper, iron, manganese, zinc, potassium and potassium salt.
Jeju Eoseungsaeng lake which is a main water resource of Eoseungsaeng water treatment plant($Q=15,000m^3/d$) experienced high chromaticity(40 CU) and pH(9.46) in 2013. This could decline customer's confidence on drinking water quality unless proper identification and removal of chromaticity were implemented. To find cause of chromaticity, water monitoring on various water parameters including TOC, algal cell count, Chl-a, turbidity, SS, conductivity, etc. were implemented. Iron and manganese were excluded from the cause of chromaticity due to its low concentration (i.e., < 0.02 mg/L). Correlation among water parameters showed that relationship between algal cell count and chromaticity was the highest(R=0.43), which suggested that presumably the main reason of chromaticity occurrence in Jeju Eoseungsaeng lake was algae.
Some metallic ions such as copper, manganese, iron, zinc and cadmium in ginseng extract, originated from white ginseng, were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The extracts were prepared with water, 35% ethanol, 50% ethanol or 75% ethanol solution followed by filtration or centrifugation. Greater amounts of metallic ions were found in the solution filtrated by filter paper (Toyo No. 5A) or by filter cloth than in that of centrifugation. The residual amount of metallic ions in the extract decreased with increasing concentration of ethanol. The percentages of each metallic ion in ginseng extracts on the basis of original amount of metallic ions were as follows: Cu, 10.4-31.9%, Fe,5.1-19.0%, Mn,3.0-12.2% Zn,7.4-12.0%, Cd,5.9-11.8%.
