방전 침전극의 곡률반경이 이온풍 발생에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Radius of Curvature of a Corona Needle on Ionic Wind Generation)

  • An electric fan for cooling high density electronic devices is limited and operated in very low efficiency. The corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for an ionic gas pump, which allows for air flow control and generation with low noise and no moving parts. These ideal characteristics of ionic pump give rise to variety applications. However, all of these applications would benefit from maximizing the flow velocities and yields of the ionic pump. In this study, a needle-mesh type ionic pump has been investigated by focusing on the radius of curvature of corona needle points elevating the ionic wind velocity and efficiency. It is found that the radius of curvature of the corona discharge needle point influences significantly to produce the ionic wind and efficiency. As a result, an elevated ionic wind velocity and increased ionic wind generation yield can be obtained by optimized the radius of curvature of the corona needle electrode.

  • This study presents preparation and characterization of composite membranes based on ionic liquids. The ionic liquids act as water in sulfonated membranes. On the behalf of ionic conduction through ionic liquid inside the membranes, non-aqueous membranes showed Arrenhius dependence on temperature with no external humidification. It was implied that hopping mechanism of proton was dominant in the ionic liquid based membranes. In addition, small angle X-ray (SAXS) studies provided the information on morphology of ionic clusters formed by the interaction between sulfonic acid groups of the polymers and ionic liquids. The SAXS spectra showed matrix peaks, ionomer peaks and Prodo's law for Nafion based composite membranes and only matrix peaks for hydrocarbon based ones. However, ionic conductivity and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed the clear formation of ionic clusters of the hydrocarbon based composite membranes. It implies for ionic liquid based high temperature membranes that it is important to use sulfonated polymers as solid matrix of ionic liquid which can form clear ionic clusters in SAXS spectra.

These ideal characteristics of ionic pump give rise to variety applications. However, all of these applications would benefit from maximizing the flow velocities and efficiencies of the pumps. In this study a needle-mesh type ionic pump, with a ring type third electrode installed just near the needle point, has been investigated by focusing on elevating the ionic wind velocity and efficiency. As a result, the enhanced ionic wind velocity and increased power yield can be obtained with the proposed ionic pump with the third electrode.

이온성 액체를 이용한 생물분자의 추출 (Extraction of Biomolcules by Ionic Liquids)

  • As an effective separation method for biomolecules, aqueous two-phase systems based on ionic liquids were suggested. Hydrophobic ionic liquids are more expensive and viscous in spite of their usage in the ionic liquid/water biphasic extraction compared with hydrophilic ionic liquids. In case of aqueous two-phase systems using hydrophilic ionic liquids, they can be diluted in aqueous phase. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of ionic liquids to aqueous salts solutions. The viscosity of ionic liquid aqueous phase is proportional to the cation chain length in ionic liquids. It is founded that the ionic liquid based aqueous two phase systems are effective for the separation of biomolecules such as acrylic acid.

  • Unlike non-ionic clathrate hydrates stably formed by van der Waals interaction between a guest molecule and a surrounding host framework, ionic clathrate hydrates are stabilized by ionic interaction between an ionic guest molecule and the host water-framework. Here, we firstly described the stable entrapment of the superoxide ions in ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate. Owing to peculiar direct guest-guest ionic interaction, the lattice structure of ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate shows significant change of lattice contraction behavior even at relatively high temperature(120K). Particularly, we note that ionic-induced dimensional change is much greater than thermal-induced change. Such findings are expected to provide useful information for a better understanding of unrevealed nature of clathrate hydrate fields.

Significant Improvement of Catalytic Efficiencies in Ionic Liquids

  • The use of ionic liquids as reaction media can confer many advantages upon catalytic reactions over reactions in organic solvents. In ionic liquids, catalysts having polar or ionic character can easily be immobilized without additional structural modification and thus the ionic solutions containing the catalyst can easily be separated from the reagents and reaction products, and then, be reused. More interestingly, switching from an organic solvent to an ionic liquid often results in a significant improvement in catalytic performance (e.g., rate acceleration, (enantio)selectivity improvement and an increase in catalyst stability). In this review, some recent interesting results which can nicely demonstrate these positive “ionic liquid effect” on catalysis are discussed.

실리카의 이온성 액체 기능화가 메탈로센 담지촉매의 에틸렌 중합 거동에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Functionalization of Silica with Ionic Liquid on Ethylene Polymerization Behavior of Supported Metallocene)

  • Ionic liquid 기능화 및 메탈로센 촉매 담지를 위해 세 종류의 무정형 실리카와 SBA-15를 담체로 사용하였다. Ionic liquid가 표면 기능화된 실리카는 1,3-bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride의 염소 음이온과 실리카 표면의 OH 그룹 사이의 상호작용에 의해 합성되었다. 에틸렌 중합을 위해 ionic liquid가 기능화된 실리카에 메탈로센과 조촉매 methylaluminoxane(MAO)을 담지하였다. SBA-15와 비교하여 큰 기공 크기를 갖는 ionic liquid가 표면 기능화된 XPO-2412와 XPO-2410에 담지된 촉매는 기능화되지 않은 실리카에 담지된 촉매보다 높은 활성을 보였다. 그러나 SBA-15에 담지된 촉매는 ionic liquid의 표면 기능화 후에 활성이 감소하였다. 이는 ionic liquid와 메탈로센 촉매, 조촉매 MAO가 담지되면 기공의 크기가 크게 줄어들기 때문에 중합 시 에틸렌 모노머와 조촉매가 기공 내 촉매 활성점으로 확산하는데 제한을 받기 때문이다. 또한 실리카 표면의 OH 그룹의 농도 변화에 따른 촉매의 중합 활성에 대한 영향을 연구하였다. 무정형 실리카의 OH 그룹의 농도가 증가할수록 중합 활성도 증가하였으며 실리카에 담지된 촉매의 중합 활성은 ionic liquid 표면처리 후에도 유사한 경향을 보였다.

아이오노머 필름에 흡수된 비이온계 염료의 분자간 상호작용에 관한 연구 (Molecular Interactions of Soaked Nonionic Dye in Ionomer Films)

  • Sodium 또는 zinc로 중화된 poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid)의 아이오노머는 ethylene 사슬 부분들로만 이루어진 결정상, acid 그룹이 존재하는 amorphous 영역, 그리고 ionic aggregate의 세 가지 상으로 나누어진다. Soaking에 의하여 흡수된 nonionic dye 분자들은 결정상을 제외한 amorphous 부분이나 ionic aggregate 분근에 존재하는데, 주위 사슬의 극성에 따라 dispersion force (ethylene 사슬 부분), polar force (acid 부분), ionic dipole (ionic aggregate 부분)의 세 가지 다른 힘의 영향 아래 놓이게 된다. 극성이 적은 ethylene 사슬부분의 dispersion force 영향 아래에 존재하는 Nile Red의 UV/Vis 흡수피크는 500nm 부근에서, polar한 acid 그룹의 영향을 받는 dye 피크는 525 nm, 그리고 ionic aggregate의 영향에 의한 dye는 Na+-아이오노머의 경우 550 nm, divalent이어서 더 큰 ionic dipole을 가지는 $Zn^{2+}$-아이오노머의 경우 610nm에서 각각 피크가 나타났다.

Effects of Structural Difference of Ionic Liquids on the Catalysis of Horseradish Peroxidase

  • The dependence of the catalytic properties of horseradish peroxidase on the structural changes of ionic liquids was investigated with two water-miscible ionic liquids, N-butyl-3methypyridinium tetraftuoroborate ([$BMP_y$][$BF_4$]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([BMIM][$MeSO_4$]), each of which shares an anion ($BF_4^-$) or a cation ($BMIM^+$) with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetraftuoroborate ([BMIM][$BF_4$]), respectively. The oxidation of guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) with $H_2O_2$was used as a model reaction. In order to minimize the effect of solution viscosity on the kinetic constants of the enzymatic catalysis, the enzymatic reactions for the kinetic study were performed in water-ionic liquid mixtures containing 25% (v/v) ionic liquid at maximum. Similarly to the previously reported results for [BMIM][$BF_4$], as the concentration of [$BMP_y$][$BF_4$] increased, the $K_m$value increased with a decrease in the $k_{cat}$value: the $K_m$value increased markedly from 2.8 mM in 100% water to 12.6 mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid, indicating that ionic liquid significantly weakens the binding affinity of guaiacol to the enzyme. On the contrary, [BMIM][$MeSO_4$] decreased the Km value to 1.4 mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid. [BMIM][$MeSO_4$] also decreased $k_{cat}$more than 3-folds [from 13.8 $s^{-1}$in 100% water to 4.1 $s^{-1}$in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid]. These results indicate that the ionic liquids interact with the enzyme at the molecular level as well as at a macroscopic thermodynamic scale. Specifically, the anionic component of the ionic liquids influenced the catalysis of horseradish peroxidase in different ways.

이온성 액체와 고분자 기반의 이차전지용 고체 전해질의 제조 (Fabrication of ionic liquid and polymer based solid-state electrolyte for secondary battery)

  • 고분자를 기반으로 하는 고체전해질은 용이한 가공성, 재료의 유연성뿐만 아니라 배터리, 슈퍼커패시터를 포함하는 이차전지 등 다양한 전기화학 소자에 응용이 가능한 소재로서, 기존 전해질의 낮은 이온전도도 및 전기화학적 안정성을 향상시키기 위하여 다양한 이온성 액체 기반의 고체 전해질에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행 중에 있다. 이온성 액체의 높은 이온전도성, 넓은 전기화학 안정성, 열적 안정성을 활용한 고분자 전해질은 다양한 전자소자에 활용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이온성 액체의 종류와 비율의 최적화를 통하여 고분자 기반의 고체 전해질을 제조하고 전기화학적 성능을 분석하여 이차전지를 포함한 다양한 전자 소자에 응용이 가능한 이온성 액체 기반의 전해질을 개발하고자 하였다. 이온성 액체의 비율을 최적화를 통하여 제조된 고분자 기반 고체 전해질의 이온 전도도는 1.46-2 S/cm로 확인되었다. 이온전도도가 향상된 이온성 액체와 고분자 기반의 고체 전해질은 다양한 이차전지에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
