  • A $Li_2O-2SiO_2$ ($LS_2$) glass was investigated as a lithium-ion conducting oxide glass, which is applicable to a fast ionic conductor even at low temperature due to its high mechanical strength and chemical stability. The $Li_2O-2SiO_2$ glass is likely to be broken into small pieces when quenched; thus, it is difficult to fabricate a specifically sized sample. The production of properly sized glass samples is necessary for device applications. In this study, we applied spark plasma sintering (SPS) to fabricate $LS_2$ glass samples which have a particular size as well as high transparency. The sintered samples, $15mm\phi{\times}2mmT$ in size, ($LS_2$-s) were produced by SPS between $480^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ at 45MPa for 3~5mim, after which the thermal and dielectric properties of the $LS_2$-s samples were compared with those of quenched glass ($LS_2$-q) samples. Thermal behavior, crystalline structure, and electrical conductivity of both samples were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and an impedance/gain-phase analyzer, respectively. The results showed that the $LS_2$-s had an amorphous structure, like the $LS_2$-q sample, and that both samples took on the lithium disilicate structure after the heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. We observed similar dielectric peaks in both of the samples between room temperature and $700^{\circ}C$. The DC activation energies of the $LS_2$-q and $LS_2$-s samples were $0.48{\pm}0.05eV$ and $0.66{\pm}0.04eV$, while the AC activation energies were $0.48{\pm}0.05eV$ and $0.68{\pm}0.04eV$, respectively.

  • The $Sr_1-_xY_xMnO_3$ (x = 0.0∼1.0) system was synthesized using amorphous citrate process. The stability of various structures and the electronic transport properties of this system were investigated. X-ray diffraction study indicated that the $Sr_1-_xY_xMnO_3$ system has three different structures depending on composition, namely, 4L-hexagonal perovskite (when x is less than 0.3), pseudocubic perovskite (when x is 0.3∼0.7), and hexagonal nonperovskite (when x is larger than 0.7) structures. The structural changes and electronic properties were interpreted based on two factors, i.e., the size of cations and the oxidation state of manganese ion. When the concentration of Y substitution exceeds 30%, the Mn-Mn repulsive interaction dominates over intermetallic attraction, and thus structure changes to pseudocubic perovskite. In perovskite phase the unit cell dimensions increases with increasing $Mn^{3+}$ ions due to yttrium substitution. The band gap of $Sr_{0.9}Y_{0.1}MnO_3$ is greater than that of $Sr_{0.5}Y_{0.5}MnO_3$. The greater band gap of $Sr_{0.9}Y_{0.1}MnO_3$ indicates that the 4L-hexagonal structure is more stabilized than cubic perovskite due to the Mn-Mn bond.

  • Hydrazones of isonicotinic acid hydrazide, viz., N-isonicotinamido-furfuralaldimine (INH-FFL), N-isonicotnamido-cinnamalidine (INH-CIN) and N-isonicotnamido-3',4',5'-trimethoxybenzaldimine (INH-TMB) were prepared by reacting isonicotinic acid hydrazide with respective aromatic aldehydes, i.e., furfural, cinnamaldehyde or 3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzaldehyde. A new series of fifteen complexes of cobalt(II) with these new hydrazones, INH-FFL, INH-CIN and INH-TMB, were synthesized by their reaction with cobalt(II) salts. The infrared spectral data reveal that hydrazone ligands behave as a bidentate ligand with N, O donor sequence towards the $Co^{2+}$ ion. The complexes were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, conductivity, infrared and electronic spectral measurements. Analytical data reveal that the complexes have general composition [Co($L)_2X_2]\;and\;[Co(L)_3](ClO_4)_2$ where L= INH-FFL, INH-CIN or INH-TMB and X = $Cl^-,{NO_3}-,\;NCS^-\;or\;CH_3COO^-.$ The thermal behaviour of the complexes were studied using thermogravimetrictechnique. Electronic spectral results and magnetic susceptibility measurements are consistent with the adoption of a six-coordinate geometry for the cobalt(II) chelates. The antimicrobial properties of cobalt(II) complexes and few standard drugs have revealed that the complexes have very moderate antibacterial activities.

  • Carbon-based nano materials have a significant effect on various fields such as physics, chemistry and material science. Therefore carbon nano materials have been investigated by many scientists and engineers. Especially, since graphene, 2-dimemsonal carbon nanostructure, was experimentally discovered graphene has been tremendously attracted by both theoretical and experimental groups due to their extraordinary electrical, chemical and mechanical properties. Electrical conductivity of graphene is about ten times to that of silicon-based material and independent of temperature. At the same time silicon-based semiconductors encountered to limitation in size reduction, graphene is a strong candidate substituting for silicon-based semiconductor. But there are many limitations on fabricating large-scale graphene sheets (GS) without any defect and controlling chirality of edges. Many scientists applied micromechanical cleavage method from graphite and a SiC decomposition method to the fabrication of GS. However these methods are on the basic stage and have many drawbacks. Thereupon, our group fabricated GS through Thermo-electrical Pulse Induced Evaporation (TPIE) motivated by arc-discharge and field ion microscopy. This method is based on interaction of electrical pulse evaporation and thermal evaporation and is useful to produce not only graphene but also various carbon-based nanostructures with feeble pulse and at low temperature. On fabricating GS procedure, we could recognize distinguishable conditions (electrical pulse, temperature, etc.) to form a variety of carbon nanostructures. In this presentation, we will show the structural properties of OS by synthesized TPIE. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Optical Microscopy (OM) observations were performed to view structural characteristics such as crystallinity. Moreover, we confirmed number of layers of GS by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. Also, we used a probe station, in order to measure the electrical properties such as sheet resistance, resistivity, mobility of OS. We believe our method (TPIE) is a powerful bottom-up approach to synthesize and modify carbon-based nanostructures.

  • This study was carried out to plan the prevention of the generation and discharge of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). The Acid Base Accounting(ABA) test was performed for geological materials such as pit wall, waste rock and stream sediments near the Imgi abandoned pyrophyllite mine in Busan, Korea. In addition, hydraulic characteristics were tested with the disk tension infiltrometer around the waste rock dump. Maximum Potential Acidity(MPA) of geological materials near the Imgi mine was 246.942kg $H_2SO_4/t$, and maximum Acid Neutralising Capacity(ANC) was 8.7kg $H_2SO_4/t$. These results indicate the pit wall and waste rock, except most of stream sediments are acid generating geological materials. These have salt and free hydrogen ion which resulted from oxidation of sulfides. Hence they could be convert rain water to acid rock drainage. Although the waste rock dump of the Imgi mine have very low infiltration rate, slopes of the waste rock dump have many "V" type erosion gullies and multi-layers. These gullies and multi-layers have coarse clastic particle layers which have very large hydraulic conductivity. Through this coarse clastic particle layer a large part of rain flow into ground. And also this layer could function as aeration path which induced oxidation of sulfide minerals and generation of ARD continuously.

  • A direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) generates electricity directly by converting the chemical energy in coal. In particular, a DCFC system with a solid oxide electrolyte and molten carbonate anode media has been proposed by SRI. In this system, however, there are conflicting effects of temperature, which enhances the ion conductivity of the solid electrolyte and reactivity at the electrodes while causing a stability problem for the anode media. In this study, the effect of temperature on the stability of a carbon-carbonate mixture was investigated experimentally. TGA analysis was conducted under either nitrogen or carbon dioxide ambient for $Li_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, and their mixtures with carbon black. The composition of the exit gas was also monitored during temperature elevation. A simplified reaction model was suggested by considering the decomposition of carbonates and the catalyzed Boudouard reactions. The suggested model could well explain both the measured weight loss of the mixture and the gas formation from it.

  • Salt stress in crops in reclaimed tidal lands can be reduced by applying soil amendments. To evaluate the effects of compost, gypsum, and phosphate on the growth of Chinese cabbage in saline-sodic soil conditions, we conducted a pot experiment in 2013 and 2014. The treatments consisted of a standard fertilizer application of a mix of compost and N-P-K fertilizer (S) and standard fertilizer applications with additional compost (S + C), gypsum (S + G), phosphate (S+P), and gypsum and phosphate (S + GP). The mean dry matter yield of cabbage in 2014 was three times as great as that in 2013, although soil EC (Electrical conductivity) in 2014 was not decreased. However, the mean ratio of sodium ion in soil solution ($SAR_{1:5}$) significantly decreased from $17.3{\pm}1.1$ in 2013 to $11.2{\pm}2.7$ in 2014. Application of gypsum had the greatest positive impact on the growth of Chinese cabbage. The S + G treatment increased dry matter yield by 7.0 (48.2) and 7.9 g/plant (16.6%) in 2013 and 2014, respectively, compared to the S treatment. Applying gypsum increased soil EC, but decreased $SAR_{1:5}$ by 14 and 38% in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The application of compost and phosphate had a small effect on the growth of Chinese cabbage. These results suggest that applying gypsum in reclaimed tidal lands can reduce the sodicity of the soil and improve crop growth.

  • We examined the effect of nutrient solution concentration in the second half of growing period on the pre- and postharvest characteristics of two leaf lettuce cultivars, 'Geokchima' and 'Cheongchima'. Plants were grown hydroponically in a deep flow technique (DFT) system at different concentrations of National Horticulture Research Institute hydroponic nutrient solution: 1/2 strength (S), 1S, 2S, and 4S. Lettuce leaf growth, number of leaves, and shoot fresh weight of both cultivars were greatest in plants grown in the 1S treatment. Compared to other treatments, pigment and nutrient ion contents were greater in the 4S treatment. Growth of lettuce was greatest in the 1S treatment, and decreased at higher or lower concentrations of nutrient solution. However, postharvest characteristics such as fresh weight loss, leaf chlorophyll level, and external appearance were better in both cultivars when grown in 2S solution. Variations in weight loss and SPAD values were smallest in the 2S treatment. These results show that the optimal nutrient concentration for growth does not necessarily provide the optimal postharvest storability.

  • We evaluated the aquatic ecosystem of Keum-Ho River through applications of the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) during June-November 1999. Overall IBI values ranged from 13 to 37 with mean of 23 (n=25, Std. error= 1.16), indicating a "Poor" or "Very Poor" condition according to the criteria of Karr (1981) and U.S. EPA (1993). The values of mean IBI declined at the rate of $0.22km^{-1}$(($r^2$=0.91, p< 0.05) along the longitudinal distance from the headwaters to the down-river. Reduced IBI values at down-river (St. 4 and 5) were attributed to the decreases in riffle benthic species and the relative abundance of insectivore and increases in tolerant species, anormalies and exotic species. Spatial pattern in IBI agreed with QHEI values, which showed a linear relation ($r^2$=0.998, p< 0.001) with mean number of species. Field measurements of conductivity and pH, indicators for variation of conservative ions, showed that the river water was diluted up to 30% by summer precipitation and surface run-off from the watershed, resulting in physical and chemical instability during the monsoon. For these reasons, average IBI values during monsoon and postmonsoon decreased more than 20% compared to pre -monsoon. Before the perturbation of the system (i.e., pre-monsoon), values of QHEI were inversely correlated (r=-0.99, p< 0.0001) with realtive abundance of native omnivore and were positively correlated (r=0.87, p=0.05) with relative abundance of native carnivore. These results indicate that spatial degradation of habitat quality modified the species richness and trophic structure, producing decreased IBI values. • In past, dye diffusion and dyeing rate in fibers have been emphasized in dyeing phenomena. However, in the light of the properties of colloids in the surface of disperse phase and dispersion, there exist specific characters such as adsorption or electric double layer, which seems to play important roles in determining the physiochemical properties in the dyeing system. Electrostatic bonding, hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals adsorption are common in dyeing as well as covalent bonding. Particularly, electrostatic bonding is premised on the existance of ionic radicals in fibers. The present study was aimed to clarify the electrokinetic phenomena of dyeing through the role of electric double layer by ion in amphoteric fibers with different ionic effects under different pH. Spectrophotometric analysis method was used to compare dyeing condition of surface, which can be detected by electrokinetic phenomena and the inner of fibers after deceleration of dyed fibers. Nylon and wool, the typical amphoteric fibers were dyed with monoazo acid dyes such as C.I. Acid Orange 20, and C.I. Acid Orange 10. Various combinations were prepared by combining pH, temperature and dye concentration, in order to generate streaming electric potential which were measured by microvolt meter and specific conductivity meter. The results were transformed to zeta potential by Helmholtz-Smoluchowski formular and to surface electric charge density by Suzawa formular, surface dye amount, and effective surface area of fibers. The amount of dyes of inner fibers were also measured by the Lambert-Beer’s law. The main results obtained are as follows. 1. By measuring zeta pontential, it was possible to detect the dyeing mechanism, surface charge density, surface dye amount and effective surface area concerning dye adsorption of the amphoteric fibers. 2. Zeta pontential increases in negative at low pH and high dye concentration in the process of dyeing. This implied that there existed ionic bond formation in the dyeing mechanism between acid dyes and amphoteric fibers. 3. Dibasic acid dye had little changing rate in zeta potential due to the difference in solubility of dye and in number of dissociated ions per dye molecule to bond with amino radicals of amphoteric fibers. The dye adsorption of mono basic acid dye was higher than that of dibasic acid dye. 4. The effective surface areas concerning dyeing were $6.3E+05\;cm^2/g$ in nylon, $1.6E+07\;cm^2/g$ in wool fiber being higher order of wool then nylon.
