Materials Stabilized Liquid Crystal Molecules on Chemically Modulated Polystyrene Surface Using Various Ion Beam Exposure Time

  • This paper introduces homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) orientations on chemically modulated polystyrene (PS) surfaces using various ion beam (IB) exposure times. Transparent PS was replaced with conventional polyimide material. As a non-contact process, the IB bombardment process induced LC orientation parallel to the IB process. Through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it was shown that the chemical compositional changes of the IB-irradiated PS surfaces were determined as a function of IB exposure time. Using this analysis, the optimal IB bombardment condition was determined at an IB exposure time of up to 15 seconds. Moreover, thermal stability on IB-irradiated PS surfaces were carried out which showed that a relatively high IB exposure time induced a thermally stable LC alignment property.

  • We investigated a solution-derived $Y_2O_3$ film treated by ion beam (IB) irradiation as a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. With IB irradiation, homogeneous LC alignment was achieved irrespective of the annealing temperature. To verify the effect of IB irradiation, we conducted surface analyses such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As $Y_2O_3$ is a high-k material, the electro-optical properties of the twisted nematic (TN) cells were superior to those of conventional TN cells based on a rubbed polymer, with an LC rising time of 4.1ms and falling time of 2.9ms. The IB-irradiated $Y_2O_3$ is a good alternative as an alignment layer for fast-switching TN LC displays.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a-C:H thin film as working gas at 30W rf bias condition. A high pretilt angle of about $5^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a Carbon Nitride (NDLC) thin film. NDLC thin film exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. A high pretilt angle of about $9.9^{\circ}$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the NDLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment is achieved by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • The potential of non-rubbing technology for applying to display devices was demonstrated by irradiating a high density argon ion beam (IB) on a polyimide (PI) as a liquid crystal alignment layer. The superior electro-optical characteristics were obtained, compared to rubbed PI, Although the low pretilt angle was created on the IB irradiated PI.

  • The response surface modeling of the pretilt angle control using ion-beam (IB) alignment on nitrogen doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer is investigated. The response surface model is used to analyze the variation of the pretilt angle under various process conditions IB exposure angle and IB exposure time are considered as Input factors. The analysis of variance technique is used to analyze the statistical significance, and effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationships betweenthe process parameters and the response. The model can allow us to reliably predict the pretilt angle with respect to the varying process conditions.

  • Ion beam (IB)-induced alignment of inorganic materials has been investigated intensively as it provides controllability in a nonstop process for producing high-resolution displays[1][2]. LC orientation via ion-beam (IB) irradiation on the nitrogen doped diamond like carbon (NDLC) thin film deposited by physical deposition method-sputtering was embodied. The NDLC thin film that was deposited by sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200eV of the ion beam intensity. The pretilt angle of LC on NDLC thin films was measured with various IB exposure time and angle. The maximum pretilt angle were showed with IB irradiation angle of $45^{\circ}$ and exposure time of 62.5 sec, respectively. To show NDLC thin film stability in high temperature, thermal stability test was proceeded. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$. In this investigation, the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of LC on NDLC thin film were measured.

The homogenous alignment can be obtain어 using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SIO thin film, when positive type NLC ($Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected However, the homeotropic alignment can be obtained using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SiO thin film, when negative type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected The LC aligning ability on the SiO thin film depends on the dielectric anisotropy type of LC. It will be discussed.

  • Alignment effects for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were studied. A high pretilt angle of 3.5$^{\circ}$ in NLC by ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film layer can be measured. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved.
