The tropane alkaloids hyoscyamine (its racemic form being atropine) and scopolamine are used medicinally as anticholinergic agents that act on the parasympathetic nerve system. Because they differ in their actions on the central nervous system, currently there is a 10-fold higher commercial demand for scopolamine, in the N-butylbromide form, than there is for hyoscyamine and atropine combined. Several solanaceous species have been used as the commercial sources of these alkaloids, but the scopolamine contents in these plants often are much lower than those of hyoscyamine. For this reason there has been long-standing interest in increasing the scopolamine contents of cultivated medicinal plants. Naturally occurring and artificial interspecific hybrids of Duboisia have high scopolamine contents and are cultivated as a commercial source of scopolamine in Australia and other countries. Anther culture combined with conventional interspecific hybridization also has been used to breed high scopolamine-containing plants in the genera Datura and Hyoscyamus, but without much success. The use of recombinant DNA technology for the manipulation of metabolic processes in cells promises to provide important contributions to basic science, agriculture, and medicine. In this review, I introduce on the enzymes and genes involved in tropane alkaloid biosynthesis and current progress in metabolic engineering approaches for tropane alkaloid, especially scopolamine, production.
An interspecific hybrid lily cultivar 'Green Star' was bred in 2005 at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea. The crossing and in vitro embryo rescue was conducted between Lilium FA97-2 (L. ${\times}$ formolongi 'Silky White' ${\times}$ L. Asiatic 'Sunray') and L. Asiatic 'Bomi (Byeongga ${\times}$ Connecticut King)' by cut style pollination method (CSM) at Suwon in 2000. The first selection was done and was tentatively named as 'FA03-5' in 2003. After in vitro multiplication and bulbing production of 'FA03-5' line, growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2003 to 2005. The evaluation of characteristics and consumer preferences were surveyed at a lily flower show of NIHHS in 2005. 'Green Star' flowered in the middle of June and grew more than 120 cm stem in length. Flowers bloomed facing upward, unspotted in petals and greenish yellow (RHS, Y6D). 'Green Star' was male sterile. Year-round flowering can be done by storing the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. It was needed to control the Botrytis disease in wet season.
This study was conducted to identify taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Rhodeus uyekii and Rhodeus ocellatus during their initial life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Hybrids were compared to their parent species, and the findings were used to inform developmental research in commercially useful aquarium fish. The hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 75.9% for cross UO (R. uyekii ♀${\times}$R. ocellatus♂) and 71.9% for cross OU (R. ocellatus♀${\times}$R. uyekii♂), which did not differ greatly from the hatching rates of the normal cross-bred group. Backcross experiments resulted in 100% egg mortality during development. Newly hatched larvae of the original hybrid crosses were similar to those of the maternal line, and the color of the egg yolk was similar to that of the paternal line; therefore, the respective traits of the interspecific parents were identifiable within the cross-bred offspring.

To facilitate the introgression of F. esculentum into the traits of F. homotropicum, several accessions of the hybrids between these two species were pollinated with F. esculentum as the recurrent parent. The embryo in vitro rescue was performed to increase the recovery of backcross progenies. The $F_{2}$ generation was more amenable than $F_{1}$ hybrids to produce backcross progenies. The $F_{1}$ hybrids were backcrossed twice with common buckwheat (pin-type F. esculentum) (recurrent backcrossing). Also, alternate backcrosses with common buckwheat and F. homotropicum (congruity backcrossing) were carried out. Pollen tube growth of BC$F_{1}$${\times}$ F. esculentum (thrum) and F. homotropicum ${\times}$ BC$F_{1}$ was the disturbed penetration exceeded for all initial interspecific hybrids, and its requirement was proportionally lower when the common buckwheat was used as the recurrent parent and as the last parent of congruity hybrids. Effects of both common buckwheat and F. homotropicum on seed success rate for hybridization were observed. Growth of hybrid embryos before rescue, regeneration of mature hybrids all increased recurrent and congruity backcrosses and inter-crosses between $F_{1}$ plants and selected fertile plants of the second congruity backcrosses.
Interspecific hybridization is a beneficial strategy in aquaculture. In this study, diploid hybrids were produced through interspecies hybridization of flounder Platichthys bicoloratus ♀ × starry flounder P. stellatus ♂, which became commercial within a year. These hybrids exhibited an advantage in growth ability, with female hybrids growing twice as large as males at 11 months. Furthermore, hybrid flounders exhibited faster growth rates than starry flounders and reciprocal hybrids. The average growth rate of hybrids was 1.37 and 1.18 times greater than that of starry flounder and reciprocal hybrids at 5.5 months, respectively; Additionally, feed efficiency was 1.21 and 1.10 times higher than that of the experimental groups. The experiments were conducted at five temperatures to determine the optimal fry production method. Six weeks of culture resulted in a significant temperature effect, with maximum growth at 27℃. However, over 90% of the males occurred in the groups at temperatures above 24℃. Therefore, the optimum temperatures for survival, growth, condition factor and frequency of the best-sized fingerling at 13 weeks of age were estimated at 21℃. Thus, hybrid flounders are of great potential for use in the flounder aquaculture industry.
A breeding program in progress at Suweon Livestock Experiment Station, RDA, involves the hybridization of italian ryegrass (Lm) and several leading forage grasses in an effort to combine the nutritive, productivity and palatability qualities of Lm with the adaptive and cold resistance qual; .les of several leading grasses. In order to study the fate of the hybridization between remotely related species, immatured hybrid embryos were cultured on media. The emasculated plants of Lm were Sikem and Tetrone. Reweille, 2n=14, of perennial ryegrass (Lp.), Forager, 2n=42, of tall fescue(Fa), First, 2n=14,of meadow fescue(Fp), Potomac, 2n=28, of orchardgrass(Dg), and Richmond, 2n=42, of timothy(Ph.p) were used as pollinators. Embryos were isolated on 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 days after pollination and cultured them on modified Murashige and Skoog media. Calluses and plantlets have been obtained after 8 days old embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Fa$, after 12 days embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Lp$, Dg, and Ph.p, and after 16 days embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Fp$. Both callus and shoot formation occurred on 6 % or less of the plated embryos of $Lm{\times}Fp$, Dg, and Ph.p. Embryoderived callus forming shoots have been obtained from 4 days old embryo crossing between $Lm{\times}Dg$ which has not successfully been done anywhere as far as we know. It means that hybrid plants of species without crossability can be obtained through the use of immatured embryo culture. Some of plated embryos developed directly shoots from embryos and the others shoot-forming callus. Cross between related species showed a high frequency of directly shoot formation from plated embryos and cross between remotely related species a high frequency of callus formation.
An anthecological study of Tilia in Korea was undertaken for six native and one introduced species. Flowers are protoandrous with anther and stigma opening during the day-time in section(sect) Anastraea and the night-time in sect Astrophilyra. Nectar production was coincided with anther and stigma opening. It is revealed that the primary role of floral bracts was attracting pollinators especially in sect Astrophilyra. The peak of stamen and stigma function, and the production of nectar and odor were closely related with pollinator attraction. Forthy-three species of insects in 30 families were identified for the pollination studies; bees were the most commonly observed visitors in sect Anastraea, while moths were the primary visitors in sect Astrophilyra. Pollination study indicate that it is section specific. But within a section, pollination is not species specific thus interspecific hybridization occurs.
