Synthetic data augmentation for pixel-wise steel fatigue crack identification using fully convolutional networks

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) plays an important role in ensuring the safety and functionality of critical civil infrastructure. In recent years, numerous researchers have conducted studies to develop computer vision and machine learning techniques for SHM purposes, offering the potential to reduce the laborious nature and improve the effectiveness of field inspections. However, high-quality vision data from various types of damaged structures is relatively difficult to obtain, because of the rare occurrence of damaged structures. The lack of data is particularly acute for fatigue crack in steel bridge girder. As a result, the lack of data for training purposes is one of the main issues that hinders wider application of these powerful techniques for SHM. To address this problem, the use of synthetic data is proposed in this article to augment real-world datasets used for training neural networks that can identify fatigue cracks in steel structures. First, random textures representing the surface of steel structures with fatigue cracks are created and mapped onto a 3D graphics model. Subsequently, this model is used to generate synthetic images for various lighting conditions and camera angles. A fully convolutional network is then trained for two cases: (1) using only real-word data, and (2) using both synthetic and real-word data. By employing synthetic data augmentation in the training process, the crack identification performance of the neural network for the test dataset is seen to improve from 35% to 40% and 49% to 62% for intersection over union (IoU) and precision, respectively, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach.

  • Passive source depth estimation has been studied for decades since the source depth can be used for target classification, target tracking, etc. The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem of ambiguity in the previous paper [S.-il. Cho et al. (in Korean), J. Acoust. Soc. Kr. 38, 120-127 (2019)] that source depth is estimated in two points. The patterns of phase shift of Channel Impulse Response(CIR) reflected in ocean surface and bottom is used for removing ambiguity of the source depth estimation, and after removing ambiguity, source depth is estimated at one point through the intersection of CIR. In order to extract CIR in case of unknown source signal and continuous signal or noise, Ray-based blind deconvolution is used. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulation in ocean waveguide.

An Experimental Study on Punching Shear at the Connection of RC Column Constrained by H-Beam with 井 Shape (정(井)자형 H형강으로 구속된 철근콘크리트 기둥접합부의 뚫림전단에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Two parallel wide flange built-up beams are widely used as struts in resisting lateral earth pressure because of the effectiveness in structure and construction. In a certain structural system, the reinforced concrete columns are to be placed at the intersection where two perpendicular beams cross each other, the square part of the joint being filled with concrete. In the punching shear mechanism of the beam-column joint, the radial deformation caused due to shear cracking will be constrained by the spring action of the squarely encompassed beam flanges. As a result, the punching shear strength of the joint concrete can be expected to be increased. To verify this phenomenon experiments have been performed for various constraining elements and distances between columns and constraints. Test results are compared with the approximation analysis formula which has been proposed in this study, based on the code formula. The results calculated by the proposed equation show comparatively close agreement with the punching shear strength detected from the test.

  • The continuous deployment of Urban Traffic Information System (UTIS) in Korea has increased the need for developing more practical applications utilizing the standard functions of UTIS facilities installed on urban arterials beyond its basic applications like gathering traffic data and providing traffic information. The UTIS-based bus signal priority may be one of UTIS-based applications meeting such demands. However, the studies on BSP have not been sufficient for actual field deployment in terms of theories and algorithms so that there have been few actual installations on real urban arterials. Thus, this study was aimed at developing a UTIS-based bus priority signal system and evaluating its effectiveness through a field study. To this end, this study presents the system development processes by dividing the UTIS-based bus priority signal system into hardware and software. In addition, the positive effectiveness of the UTIS-based bus priority signal system was verified through a field application test which was conducted at Gyeonggi Global Trade High School intersection.

Development of the Traffic Signal Control Strategy and Signal Controller for Tram (트램 운영을 위한 신호제어 전략 및 신호제어기의 개발)

  • In recent years, tram has been the focus of a new mode of public transportation that can solve traffic jams and decrease public transit usage and environmental problem. This research is in the works to develop a tram signal controller and signal control strategies, and aim to resolve the problem of what could happen if a tram system was installed in general road. We developed the hierarchical signal control strategies to obtain a minimum tram bandwidth and to minimize vehicle delay, in order to perform a priority control to include passive and active signal priority control strategies. The strategies was produced for S/W and H/W, it is based in standard traffic signal controller. We conducted a micro simulation test to evaluate the hierarchical signal control strategies, which showed that the developed optimization model is effective to prevent a tram's stop in intersection, to reduce a tram's travel time and vehicle's delay.

An Effectiveness Analysis of pedestrian crosswalk signal on roundabout (회전교차로의 보행신호 설치효과 분석)

  • Roundabouts have been operated in Europe, America and Australia since the 1970s, and many relevant researches continually was carried out. Though many studies regarding roundabout have been recently conducted in korea, most of them have focused on its operational safety and efficiency. Moreover, roundabout design guideline did not define a clear criteria related to pedestrian in roundabout, but seldom investigate the influences of pedestrian on crosswalk. In this study, we seek ways to operate the pedestrian crosswalk signal on roundabout maximizing their operational effects in exceptional case such as rush hour or intersection near the special facilities. We proved that roundabout signal operation is effective under certain circumstances in according to the number of pedestrian, and suggested the optimal signal timing plan for signalized roundabouts. For pursuing the above, we conducted the simulation test using the VISSIM model. The results show that the operational effectiveness of signalized roundabout was evaluated to be better than non-signalized roundabout in specific pedestrian volume condition. In addition, those results are confirmed using simulation analysis conducted on the real roundabout.

Improvement of the HCM Delay Estimation Model for Exclusive Permitted Left Turns (비보호 좌회전 지체도 추정모형의 개선)

  • Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) provides an analytical delay estimation model to assist the evaluation of traffic at a signalized intersection. The model revised and included in the HCM published in the year 2000 reflects the results of recent studies and is utilized in various fields of transportation studies. For the implementation of the model in the case of permitted left turns, the HCM supplement provides a computational procedure to adjust the saturation flow rate of permitted left toms. The model however, is originally designed for a protected movement and thus underestimates the delay of permitted left turns due to its difference right-of-way nature. This document describes (1) a review of the theoretical background of the HCM delay estimation model, (2) problems embedded in the model for the delay estimation of permitted left turns, (3) a proposed model developed in this study to improve the delay estimation for permitted left turns and (4) a set of verification tests. In order to reflect various traffic and control conditions in the test, simulation studies were performed to by using the field data based on 120 different permitted left-turn scenarios. Comparison studies conducted between sets of delays estimated by the HCM and the proposed models against a set of the CORSIM delays and showed that the proposed model improved the estimation of the permitted left-turn delays. The explanatory variable of the relationship between the HCM delay and the simulation delay was 0.47 and the one between the delay estimated by the proposed model and the simulation delay was 0.77.

Geographically Weighted Regression on the Characteristics of Land Use and Spatial Patterns of Floating Population in Seoul City (서울시 유동인구 분포의 공간 패턴과 토지이용 특성에 관한 지리가중 회귀분석)

  • The key objective of this research is to review the effectiveness of spatial regression to identify the influencing factors of spatial distribution patterns of floating population. To this end, global and local spatial autocorrelation test were performed using seoul floating population survey(2014) data. The result of Moran's I and Getis-Ord $Gi^*$ as used in the analysis derived spatial heterogeneity and spatial similarities of floating population patterns in a statistically significant range. Accordingly, Geographically Weighted Regression was applied to identify the relationship between land use attributes and population floating. Urbanization area, green tract of land of micro land cover data were aggregated in to $400m{\times}400m$ grid boundary of Seoul. Additionally public transportation variables such as intersection density transit accessibility, road density and pedestrian passage density were adopted as transit environmental factors. As a result, the GWR model derived more improved results than Ordinary Least Square(OLS) regression model. Furthermore, the spatial variation of applied local effect of independent variables for the floating population distributions.

Prediction of Evacuation Time for Emergency Planning Zone of Uljin Nuclear Site (울진원전 방사선비상계획구역에 대한 소개시간 예측)

  • The time for evacuation of residents in emergency planning zone(EPZ) of Uljin nuclear site in case of a radiological emergency was estimated with traffic analysis. Evacuees were classified into 4 groups by considering population density, local jurisdictions, and whether they ate residents or transients. The survey to investigate the behavioral characteristics of the residents was made for 200 households and included a hypothetical scenario explaining the accident situation and questions such as dwelling place, time demand for evacuation preparation transportation means for evacuation, sheltering place, and evacuation direction. The microscopic traffic simulation model, CORSIM, was used to simulate the behavior of evacuating vehicles on networks. The results showed that the evacuation time required for total vehicles to move out from EPZ took longer in the daytime than at night in spite that the delay times at intersections were longer at night than in the daytime. This was analyzed due to the differences of the trip generation time distribution. To validate whether the CORSIM model fan appropriately simulate the congested traffic phenomena assumable in case of emergency, a benchmark study was conducted at an intersection without an actuated traffic signal near Uljin site during the traffic peak-time in the morning. This study indicated that the predicted output by the CORSIM model was in good agreement with the observed data. satisfying the purpose of this study.

Cross Calibration of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Equipment for Diagnosis of Osteoporosis: between Domestic Manufacturers and Global Manufacturers (골밀도 장치의 교차분석 ; 국내 제조사와 해외 제조사 비교)

  • Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry is mainly used as an X-ray test method. For equipment manufactured GE and Hologic, cross-calibration analyses (CCA) of machines from the same manufacturer and between units from different manufacturers have been conducted, but the CCA of equipment manufactured in Korea are inadequate. Through CCA, we present a formula of the intersections between the Korean medical equipment company (KEC) with GE and Hologic manufactured DXA, and among the KEC DXA. The CCA was conducted for the European Spine Phantom on DXA from four KEC and three global medical equipment company (GEC) manufacturers. We compared bone mineral density (BMD) values and calculated the CCA equation by linear regression analysis. The standard-deviations (SD) of the BMD values were highest for the Dexxum T for the low, medium, and high spine, which were 0.030, 0.029, and 0.037, respectively. The smallest SD in the low and medium vertebrae were 0.005 and 0.004 for the Horizon Ci, respectively, and 0.005 for the Osteo Pro Max in the high vertebrae. Based on the intersection equations of the KEC DXA established in this study, CCA of various KEC DXA should be established for more accurate follow-up of BMD tests in clinical environments.
