  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effects of health science majors' communication skills on their adjustment to college life. Methods : The subjects were 336 college students majoring in health science at colleges located in Busan. The survey's questionnaire comprised 38 items, including 15 items for communication skills and 19 items for adjustment to college life. Results : In the gender-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, female students had better communication skills, with overall higher scores than male students for the understanding others and communication. In the age-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, students aged 21 to 22 showed the best communication skills, while students aged 18 to 20 exhibited the least communication skills. In terms of adjustment to college life, those aged 25 or older scored the highest, and those aged 21 to 22 scored the lowest. In the school-year-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, third- and first-year students showed the best and least communication skills, respectively. Overall, third- and fourth-year students were more adjusted at adjusting to college life than first- and second-year students. Third-year students also scored the highest in academic adjustment, whereas second-year students scored the lowest. In terms of relationships between the students' communication skills and their adjustment to college life, communication skills were positively correlated with the following subdomains: understanding of others, self-expression, and communication. Communication skills also showed a positive correlation with adjustment to the college environment, including personal-emotional adjustment. Conclusions : The present study found that communication skills did not significantly affect health science majors' adjustment to college life. However, given that communication skills are an essential factor for effective work performance and greater job satisfaction, it is recommended that colleges provide students with relevant education and experiences to help them enhance communication skills while in school.

Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental one using a nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design. The experimental group consisted of 30 members who participated in one of the two hospitals, and the control group consisted of 31 members who participated in the other hospital. These two groups were randomly assigned to one of two mental hospitals in a local area. The experimental group participated in six sessions of the NVC program. Results: As a result, empathy (F=5.29, p=.025) and social anhedonia (F=6.92, p=.011) has showed significant effects. However, interpersonal relationships were not statistically significant (F=0.83, p=.366). Conclusions: This study verified that the NVC program was effective in improving communication skills and the negative symptoms of patients with schizophrenia. Developing a variety of programs and applying interventions will help community rehabilitation and social adjustment for patients with schizophrenia.

The mean score for hospital coordinators' role conflict was 2.82, which was lower than average. Among subfactors for role conflict, personal role conflict had a significant effect on job satisfaction, while role ambiguity had no effect on job satisfaction. 2) The mean score for hospital coordinators' self-efficacy was 3.42, which was slightly higher than average. Other mean scores were as follows: job attitude 3.83, interpersonal skills 3.54, administrative knowledge 3.30, and medical treatment knowledge 3.02. Among subfactors for self-efficacy, job attitude and adminstrative knowledge had significant effects on job satisfaction, while interpersonal skills and medical treatment knowledge had no effect on job satisfaction (p < 0.01). In conclusion various hospital administration techniques, related job training and education needs to be given when introducing a hospital coordinator in order to strengthen the competitiveness of medical institutions. • The present study aimed to examine participants' perception regarding improvements in education for their return to a mountain village, based on "satisfaction, motivation's achievement, and effectiveness." Survey was conducted with 80 participants in 2017, of which 64 valid responses were used for statistical analysis. SPSS 21.0 program was used to conduct descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The major findings were that a higher level of "satisfaction regarding the instructor and teaching materials" resulted in a higher level of motivation's achievement of technology skills, social skills and effectiveness in interpersonal exchange. The findings also revealed that if "the content of education" were satisfactory, there was effective self development. In addition, the higher the motivation's achievement of social skill, the higher the perception in effectiveness of self development and interpersonal exchange. The study can contribute to provide baseline data for improvement of education on return of people to their mountain villages, which are collaborating with civic groups, governments, research institutions and enterprises.

  • Team project learning is a type of Project-Based Learning, which is an effective learning method for developing collaborative competency and interpersonal communication skills, as well as for developing cognitive competency such as critical thinking, creative thinking, and analytical skills. This research, conducted to analyze learning activities, focuses on students' creative thinking and activities in TPBL(Team Project-Based Learning). A qualitative approach including a reflective journal based on the 6 stages of TPBL, was adopted for this purpose. In this study, 69 reflective journals on the three stages (developing a theme, researching, theme-making) of 23 undergraduate students were categorized on the basis of three criteria: divergent thinking factors, convergent thinking factors and affective factors. The results show that the participants' journals demonstrated twenty-eight activities from nine cognitive factors and nine activities from three affective factors were derived from reflect journal. This finding indicates that more appropriate instructional strategies are needed for students to enhance their creative thinking skills and activities

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of TSJ-JSM (Job Stress Management) program, which was developed for improving interpersonal relationship and mitigating job stress among social workers through convergence methods with biomedical and social scientific measurements. In order to achieve the purpose, utilizing quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group design was applied. Participants were recruited among social welfare residential facility workers with volunteer intention, and 21 participants divided into three groups randomly: experimental, comparison, and control groups consisted of 7 workers respectively. TSL-JSM program consisted of 12 sessions were implemented to experimental group, on the other hands, other employee assistant program with 12 stages was applied to comparison group. Data analysis for verification of TSL-JSM program was conducted with SPSS 25.0. Both social scientific and biomedical scientific measures show that TSL-JSM program has most strong effects on enhancing interpersonal relationship skills and allaying level of job stress by levels of increased HRV SDNN and decreased Corisol.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of Person-centered Critical Care Nursing (PCCN) and the factors influencing PCCN for nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Methods: This study was designed by cross-sectional descriptive correlational study. The participants included 147 ICU nurses in two general hospitals in Seoul, Korea. Demographic characteristics, PCCN, communication skills, professionalism, and work environment were measured. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple linear regression with the SPSS/Win 25.0 program. Results: The average age of the participants was 29.6±4.7 years and the mean work experience in the ICU was 4.67±3.52 years. The level of PCCN was 3.70±0.41, which was moderate to high, and it significantly showed a positive correlation with therapeutic communication skills (r=.66, p<.001), global interpersonal communication competence (r=.42, p<.001), professionalism (r=.38, p<.001), and work environment (r=.16, p=.048). The factors influencing PCCN were identified as therapeutic communication skill and global interpersonal communication competence (Adj R2=.45, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study were confirmed that the strategies to promote PCCN are necessary to enhance therapeutic communication skill and global interpersonal communication competence. In addition, they may be particularly meaningful in providing basic data for nursing education and future intervention development research to promote PCCN for the ICU nurses. For improving PCCN for healthcare providers in ICU, further studies should be conducted to develop education and intervention programs.
