A Comparative Study on Characters and Effects of the On-Line Social Network in Korea & Japan (한국과 일본의 온라인 관계망의 특성과 효과에 대한 비교연구)

  • This study is an attempt to provide some answers to question about how characteristics and general recognition regarding internet use in Korea and Japan influence fostering and maintaining on-line social network in each of countries. Survey is used to compare Korean internet users and Japanese internet users in terms of characteristics of on-line social network, individual's propensity for internet use, including their recognition on internet. The study's main findings go as follows. First, Korean internet users tend to be more active in using internet than Japanese internet users do, thus having larger on-line social network and more intensive internet use than Japanese internet users do. However, there is a commonality that majority of internet users in both countries use internet to connect them to person with whom they have private relationship but they cannot meet frequently. Second, for Korean internet users, individual's propensity, characteristics, and recognition regarding internet use is not related to how to contact others. To the contrary, for Japanese internet users, how to contact others in on-line setting seems to vary according to whether or not they have relation-oriented internet use and how they recognize the availability of internet. Third, a commonality regarding the size of on-line social network is found between Korea and Japan that the total numbers of people enrolled as network increases if people use internet in order to get information. This confirms previous finding that relationship based on weak tie is instrumental in fostering on-line social relations and likely produces advantage in getting information. Finally, for Japanese internet users, the degree of risk recognized in on-line setting, that is the degree of interpersonal trust, appears to greatly influence overall relationship -building in on-line.

The Nonlinear Association Between Internet Using Time for Non-Educational Purposes and Adolescent Health

  • Objectives: This study was performed to consider the association between Internet using time for non-educational purposes and adolescent health, and to examine how health status differs between Internet users and non-users. Methods: We analyzed 2009 data from the Korea Adolescent Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, conducted on a nationally representative sample of students in grades 7 to 12. A total of 75 066 adolescents were categorized into four groups according to their Internet using time excluding using for educational purposes: non-Internet users (NIUs), occasional Internet users (OIUs) (<1 h/d), moderate Internet users (MIUs) (${\geq}1$ and <2 h/d), and heavy Internet users (HIUs) (${\geq}2$ h/d). Health factors included eight health risk behavior indices, four mental health indices and six physical health indices. Results: The distribution of Internet use was as follows: NIUs 17.4%, OIUs 68.1%, MIUs 12.7%, and HIUs 1.7%. In multivariate analysis, using OIUs as a reference, U- or J-shaped associations were observed for five health risk behavior indices (current smoking, current drinking, drug abuse, sexual intercourse, sedentary behavior on weekdays) and four mental health indices (stressed, depressed, suicidal ideation, attempted suicide) in both genders. After removing confounding effects, including age, region, school type, subjective school record, subjective economic status, presence of parents, living with family, and sedentary behavior, these associations were still observed. Conclusions: Health professionals should consider both Internet non-users (for non-educational purposes) and heavy users to be high-risk groups in terms of health status. Also, more well-designed studies are needed to clarify what factors are working in these nonlinear associations.

The Need for Information Literacy Instruction for Public Library Internet Service Users (공공도서관의 인터넷서비스 이용자를 위한 정보이용능력 지도의 필요성에 관한 연구)

  • This research is a study designed to identify the needs for information literacy instruction for the U.S. public library Internet service users. The levels and needs of Internet service users as well as the development and effectiveness of the Internet services at the U.S. public libraries were investigated. The survey was administered to the Internet service users at four public libraries in the upper Midwest region of the U.S.A total of 386 surveys were collected and analyzed. The result showed that as the years of Internet use experience and the level of expertise increases, user satisfaction decreases. However, the users who had taken any Internet class showed more satisfaction than who had not. This research offers a new direction and need for information literacy instruction for public library Internet service users.

  • The Internet is extremely important to accomplish numerous items, from education to businesses and entertainment. Therefore, the quality of its performance must be efficient. Nowadays, there is a lack of information available for users to choose a suitable Internet service. What information is available might be insufficient, inaccurate, or regularly updated. Accordingly, there is a need to develop an electronic system that enables users to evaluate their current Internet service subscription. Several factors are used as evaluation criteria in the system that affect users' decisions. In this paper, a prototype of a design science research project is proposed to address a few objectives. First, it can help Internet service users in Saudi Arabia to make the best decision for themselves regarding Internet services subscriptions. Second, it can assist the Saudi government to seek one of the 2030 vision goals: the digital transformation that depends on having a good Internet connection. The proposed solution is a promising one that would help Internet service users to make the best decision for themselves and choose the best Internet service that fits their needs. A qualitative method has been used to evaluate the efficiency and the utility of the proposed system prototype. The results showed the extent of participants' acceptance of the Internet Service Evaluation System.

Differences in Privacy-Protective Behaviors by Internet Users in Korea and China (인터넷 사용자의 개인정보보호 행동의 차이에 관한 연구)

  • Privacy-protective behavior can be classified into passive behavior and active behavior. Passive behavior includes refusal, misrepresentation, and removal, while word-of-mouth, complaint, and seeking for help belong to active behavior. Internet users in different countries may take different types of privacy-protective behavior because of cultural and social differences. This study analyzes the differences in Internet users' privacy-protective behavior between Korea and China. Korean Internet users take refusal, complaint, and seeking to protect their privacy information, while misrepresentation is not an option for Korean Internet users. Chinese Internet users take refusal, complaint, seeking, and misrepresentation to protect their privacy information. In Korea, passive behavior (refusal) is chosen more often than active behavior (complaint and seeking for help), while in China active behavior(complaint and seeking for help) is preferred to passive behavior (refusal and misrepresentation). The differences of privacy-protective behavior in the two countries may provide some implications for online companies, if they want to avoid the business risk due to privacy concerns and to take appropriate steps to deal with privacy-protective behavior by Internet users.

  • Until now, most of the studies about the internet service have focused mainly on the adoption of on-line(wired) internet services, while there have relatively been very few studies about the adoption and usage of wireless or mobile internet services. The generic model explaining the adoption behaviors of wireless internet services has not been made yet. Previous studies of that area is not so easy to find. The purposes of this paper are two-folds. The first is to find the factors affecting the users' intention and commitment behavior of mobile internet services. The second is to find the relative importance of the factors in users making decisions about users' usage intention and commitment behavior. In the theoretical part of this paper, the precedent studies concerning the technology acceptance model and the theories of on-line internet services adoption, the theories of the mobile internet services, are reviewed and analyzed.

A Comparative Analysis on the Usage of Internet Banking Users in Korea and China: Based on the UTAUT Theory (UTAUT 이론을 기반으로 한 인터넷뱅킹의 이용에 영향을 미치는 요인: 한국과 중국의 비교연구)

  • This study examined the difference in the usage of internet banking users between Korea and China. This model tests various theoretical research hypotheses relating to internet banking, The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology(UTAUT). The factors influencing on the use intention of Internet banking have been classified as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions. The proposed model was empirically tested using data collected from a survey of internet banking users in Korea and China. The model is used by SPSS 15.0 and AMOS 7.0 for analysis on the sample collected from 272 respondents. The result of hypothesis testing are as follows. First, performance expectancy and social influence positively influence use intention of internet banking user both Korea and China. Second, facilitating conditions only positively influence on the usage of internet banking users in Korea. On the other side, effort expectancy do not influence the use intention of internet banking users in both two countries. The results of study will provide practical implications on the internet banking in Korea and China.

A study on mobile internet users′ lifestyle and service preference (모바일 인터넷 사용자의 유형 및 서비스 선호도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was 1) to examine the usage of mobile internet by cell phone or palm pilot, etc., 2) to analyze mobile users' lifestyles, 3) to examine preferred fashion services according to users' lifestyles and 4) to investigate service satisfaction and preference with the mobile internet. 193 university students in Seoul were randomly selected as subject. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (i.e., percentage, frequency), factor analysis, cluster analysis and ANOVA. The results of the study were as follows: first, most mobile users spent 10 min a day for using the mobile internet (i.e., short message service) mainly in transportation vehicles. Secondly, five factors in the mobile users' lifestyle were named as: 'surfer', 'absorber', 'expert', 'accepter' and 'enthusiast'. Thirdly, two factors in the preferences of fashion service on mobile internet were 'customized information service' and 'ordinary information service'. Fourthly, according to the internet lifestyle, mobile users were classified into three groups: 'mania group', 'follower group', and 'veteran group'. The mania group was the highest group in mobile service satisfaction and service preference. Marketing implications are discussed for the successful mobile business in clothing and textile industry.

The Usage of Nutrition Information on Internet by Users' Occupations (인터넷 이용자의 직업에 따른 영양 정보 이용 현황 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the interests in food and nutrition information of internet users, and find the major problems associated with the use of internet information. Of 660 internet users, including 152 professionals, 127 white-collars, 130 college students, and 29 others, 66.4% had accessed the internet to obtain information. Of the subjects, 71% had used the internet to obtain nutrition information, 91.3% of which answered that they would keep using the internet for this purpose. The area of greatest interest and need of the professional users, in relation to nutrition information from the internet, was 'recipe and menu' (p<0.001). Whereas, the white-collars were most interested in nutrition information for 'diet for weight control' and 'diet'(p<0.001). Students were most interested in nutrition information related to 'diet' and 'diet for weight control'(p<0.001). Due to the variety of interests and applications of different users, there is a need to develop specialized nutrition information sites for internet users to easily obtain reliable and valuable information.

A Study on the Perceived Seriousness of the Consumer Problem between E-commerce Users and Non-Users - Focused on University Consumers - (인터넷상거래 이용자/비이용자의 소비자문제 심각성지각 연구 - 대학생소비자를 중심으로 -)

  • This study was intended to present the plan for preventing and solving the seriousness of the consumer problem perceived in the e-commerce. For this purpose, 723 questionnaires were distributed to university As a result of analysis, the following findings were obtained: 1) It was found that e-commerce users had higher knowledge of the degree of internet un, the ability to use information on the internet, the disposition of computerization, and e-commerce related consumer than e-commerce non-users. 2) It was found that e-commerce non-users had the higher level of perceived seriousness of the consumer problem than e-commerce users. Especially, it was found that e-commerce non-users had the high level of perceived seriousness of the consumer problem related to the problem of exchange, termination and after-sale nice and the leakage of exchange, termination and after-sale service and the leakage of private information e-commerce user. 3) It was found that university consumers' perceived seriousness of the consumer problem in e-commerce over the internet showed a significant difference in the ability to use information on the internet between e-commerce users and non-users.
