  • Finite element analysis is used to study the role of interfacial properties on the bond strength of reinforcing steel to concrete. Specifically, the role played by epoxy coatings on the failure of standard beam-end specimens is explored. Experimental results show that epoxy coatings reduce bond strength, but that the effect is dependent on the bar size and the deformation pattern. The finite element model for the beam-end specimen includes representations for the deformed steel bar, the concrete, and the interfacial material. The interface elements can be varied to match the stiffness and friction properties of the interfacial material. Cracking within the concrete is represented using Hillerborg's ficticious crack model. The model is used to study important aspects or behavior observed in the tests and to provide an explanation for the effect of the various test parameters.

  • A 3D discrete element model integrating the rough surface contact concept with the flat-joint model is suggested to examine the mechanical characteristics of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in concrete. The essential components of our DEM procedure include the calculation of the actual contact area in an element contact-pair related to the bonded factor using a Gaussian probability distribution of asperity height, as well as the determination of the contact probability-relative displacement form using the least square method for further computing the force-displacement of ITZs. The present formulations are implemented in MUSEN, an open source development environment for discrete element analysis that is optimized for high performance computation. The model's meso-parameters are calibrated by using uniaxial compression and splitting tensile simulations, as well as laboratory tests of concrete from the literature. The present model's DEM predictions accord well with laboratory experimental tests of pull-out concrete specimens published in the literature.

  • A three-point bending test was performed on roll-bonded Mg/Al/STS clad-metal plates under two different testing conditions (Mg layer in tension, or STS in tension) and their mechanical response and fracture behavior were investigated. Bending strength was found to be greater under the condition of Mg layer in tension. Heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ increased the bending formability, suggesting the interfacial strength increased at $200^{\circ}C$. Under the condition of Mg in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ fractured in two steps, with the first step associated with the interfacial fracture between Mg and Al, and the second the fracture of the Mg layer. STS/Al layers were found to be bent without complete fracture. Under the condition of STS in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ exhibited a very small load drop at the displacement, which is similar to that of the first load drop associated with the interfacial fracture under the condition of Mg in tension. In this case, no interfacial cracks were found and the complete cut-through fracture of clad was observed at low temperature heat treatment conditions, suggesting excellent interfacial strength. When the heat treatment temperature was higher than $300^{\circ}C$, interfacial cracks were observed. The local stress condition and the position of the interface with respect to the surface were found to have a great influence on the fracture behaviors of clad metals.

  • The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures by externally bonded GFRP has become increasingly common in resent years. However the analysis and design method for GFRP plate strengthening of RC beams is not well established yet. The purpose of present paper is, therefore, to define the failure mechanism and failure behavior of strengthened RC beam using GFRP and then to propose a resonable method for the calculation of interface debonding load for those beams. From the experimental results of beams strengthened by GFRP, the influence of length and thickness, width of plate on the interfacial debonding failure behavior of beam is studied and, on the basis of test results, the semi-empirical equation to predict debonding load is developed. The proposed theory based on nonlinear analysis and critical flexural crack width, predicts relatively well the debonding failure load of test beams and may be efficiently used in the analysis and design of strengthened RC beams using GFRP.

  • The surface energies and acid-base interaction between the untreated and treated Jute or Hemp fibers and different matrix compositions of polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymers (PP-MAPP) were investigated using dynamic contact angle measurement. The contribution of the acid-base property into the interfacial adhesion of the natural fibers/matrix systems were characterized by calculating the work adhesion coming from the acid-base interaction. On the other hand, microfailure mechanism of both single Jute and Hemp fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and acoustic emission. Distinctly different micro failure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems wet ε observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.

  • Carbon fiber/epoxy composites using electrodeposited monomeric and polymeric coupling agents were compared with the dipping and the untreated cases. Treating conditions such as time, concentration and temperature were optimized. Four-fibers embedded micro-composites were prepared for fragmentation test. Interfacial properties of four-fiber composites with different surface treatments were investigated with simultaneous acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The microfailure mechanisms occurring from fiber break, matrix and interlayer crackings were examined by AE parameters and an optical microscope. It was found that interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of electrodeposited carbon fibers was much higher than the other cases under dry and wet conditions. Well separated and different-shaped AE groups occurs for the untreated and ED treated case, respectively.

  • A plated beam is strengthened by bonding a thin plate to the tension face; it often fails because of premature debonding of the thin plate from the original beam in a brittle manner. A sound understanding of the mechanism of such debonding failure is very important for the effective use of this strengthening technique. This paper presents an improved analytical solution for interfacial stresses that incorporates multiple loading conditions simultaneously, including prestress, mechanical and thermal loads, and the effects of adherend shear deformations and curvature mismatches between the beam and the plate. Simply supported beams bonded with a thin prestressing plate and subjected to both mechanical and thermal loading were considered in the present work. The effects of the curvature mismatch and adherend shear deformations of the beam and plate were investigated and compared. The main mechanisms affecting the distribution of interfacial stresses were analyzed. Both the normal and shear stresses were found to be significantly influenced by the coupled effects of the elastic moduli with the ratios $E_a/E_b$ and $E_a/E_p$.

  • In this paper, the problem of interfacial stresses in damaged reinforced concrete beams strengthened with bonded prestressed functionally graded material plate and subjected to a uniformly distributed load, arbitrarily positioned single point load, or two symmetric point loads is developed using linear elastic theory. The adopted model takes into account the adherend shear deformations by assuming a linear shear stress through the depth of the damaged RC beam. This solution is intended for application to beams made of all kinds of materials bonded with a thin FGM plate. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the functionally graded material plate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. Finally, numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters of the beams on the distributions of the interfacial stresses.

  • The design methods for the steel plate strengthened RC structures are not well established yet because the structural behavior of plated RC beams is more complex than that of regular unplated ones. The main purpose of this paper is to present the premature failure mechanism of steel plate strengthened RC beams. The analytical models of interfacial stress and normal are also proposed in this paper. The comparisons between the analytical results using the proposed theory and experimental ones relatively satisfied.
