The purpose of this study was to estimate the shear bond strength and observe the fractured and interfacial surfaces of various dentin bonding agents used conjunction with a visible light cured composite. The senentytwo human premolars and molars extracted due to periodontal or orthodontic reasons were used and randomely divided into six groups. All the prepared dentin surfaces were treated with Superbond D-liner, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All-Bond 2 and Prisma Universal Bond 3 accroding to the manufacturer's instructions. Six specimens were then demineralized in 10 % HCl for 24 hours and the other six specimens were not demineralized in order to observe the interfacial surfaces with Hitachi X-450 SEM at 25Kv. Also shear bond strength were obtained using an Instron Testing Machine with a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The following results were obtained : 1. Although shear bond strength of Superbond D-Liner(17.35 MPa) and Scotch-bond Multi-Purpose group(17.29 MPa) were higher than the All-Bond 2(12.80 MPa) and Prisma Universial Bond 3 (13.43 MPa), there were no significant statistic differences in the shear bond strength between 4 groups.(P<0.05) As a result of etching to dentin in Prism a Universial BOND 3 experimentally, the resin tag was formed, but shear bond strength was decreased. 2. The resin tag into the opened dentinal tubule was formed in Superbond D-Liner, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All-Bond 2(etching) and Prisma Universial Bond 3(etching), but not in the All-Bone 2 and Prism a Universial Bond 3(non-etching). 3. Strong, durable bonds between dentin and dentinal bonding agents are essential, not only resin tag into the dentinal tubules, but also hybrid layer.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the interfacial bond strength of repaired composite resins, Lite-Fil P and Bis-Fil II, under different interfacial conditions. The matured composite resin specimen were prepared as Table I and divided into 9 groups. All specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing. The results were as follows; 1. The bond strength of the groups that bonding agent was applicated was greater than that of the groups that bonding agent was not applicated. 2. The bond strength of the saliva contaminated groups was the lowest. 3. The bond strength of the group that chemical cured composite resin bonded to chemical cured composite resin was greater than that of the other groups. 4. The bond strength of the no-treated group was greater than that of saliva contaminated group, and lesser than that of the bonding agent applicated groups.
The Si3N4 composites reinforced with carbon-coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours to examine the effects of carbon-coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced Si3N4 composites. The flexural strength of the Si3N4 composites and Si3N4 monolith respectively. The weak interfacial bond between carbon-coated SiC whiskers and Si3N4 matrix which enhances the crack deflection and whisker pull-out could contribute to the improvement of mechanical properties of the composites.
An Al film deposited on the Kovar alloy substrate was anodically-bonded to the borosilicate glass, and the bond interfaces was closely investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Al oxide was found to form a layer ~l0 nm thick at the bond interface, and fibrous structure of the same oxide was found to grow epitaxially in the glass from the oxide layer. The fibrous structure grew with the bonding time. The mechanism of the formation of this fibrous structure is proposed on the basis of the migration of Al ions under the electric field. Penetration of Al into glass beyond the interfacial Al oxide was not detected. The comparison of the amount of excess oxygen ions generated in the alkali depletion layer with that incorporated in the Al oxide suggests that the growth of the alkali-ion depletion layer is controlled by the consumption of excess oxygen to form the interfacial Al oxide.

A series of reinforced concrete beams was tested to evaluate the flexural performance of the repaired RC beams. The key parameters for this study were the size and location of the patch, and the repair materials, including polymer, polymer-cementitious and cementitious materials. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode with minor interfacial bond failure. Beams repaired with polymer, polymer-cementitious and cementitious materials recover 100%, 91%, and 97% of the flexural strength respectively, while beams with cement mortar lose approximately 30% of the strength. Compared with the pressure injection techniques the specimens repaired with patching techniques show low flexural strength, with significant interfacial bond failure. Location and size of the repaired part do not affect the recovering performance. Interfacial behavior between repair and strengthening materials is the major influencing factor for the composite structures.
Though steel reinforcing bars are the most widely used tensile reinforcement, corrosion problems are encountered due to the exposure to aggressive environments. As an alternative material to steel, the fiber reinforced polymers have been used as reinforcement in concrete structures. However, bond strength of FRP rebar is relatively low compared to steel rebar. It has been reported that fibers in matrix can resist crack growth, propagation and finally result in an increase of toughness. In this study, high-strength concrete reinforced with structural fibers was produced to enhance interfacial bond behavior between FRP rebar and concrete matrix. The interfacial bond-behaviors were investigated from a direct pullout test. The test variables were surface conditions of GFRP bars and fiber types. Total of 54 pullout specimens with three different types of bars were cast for bond strength tests. The bond strength-slip responses and resistance of the bond failure were evaluated. The test results showed that the bond strength and toughness increased according to the increased fiber volume.
This paper describes the concept and the characteristics of hyper interfacial bonding developed as a new concept joining process for UFG (ultra-fine grained) steel. Hyper interfacial bonding process is characterized by instantaneous surface melting bonding which involves a series of steps, namely, surface heating by high frequency induction, the rapid removing of heating coil and joining by pressing specimens. UFG steels used in this study have the average grain size of 1.25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The surface of specimen can be rapidly heated up and melted within 0.2s. Temperature gradient near heated surface is relatively steep, and peak temperature drastically fell down to about 1100K at the depth of 2~3mm away from the heated surface of specimen. Bainite is observed near bond interface, and also M-A (martensite-austenite) islands are observed in HAZ. Grain size increases with increasing heating power, however, the grain size in bonded zone can be restrained under 11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Hardened zone is limited to near bond interface, and the maximum hardness is Hv350~Hv390.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the zirconia surface architecturing technique (ZSAT) on the bond strength between veneering porcelain and zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 20 sintered zirconia ceramic specimens were used to determine the optimal surface treatment time, and were randomly divided into 4 groups based on treatment times of 0, 1, 2, and 3 hours. After etching with a special solution, the surface was observed under scanning electron microscope, and then the porcelain was veneered for scratch testing. Sixty 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal ceramic blocks were used for tensile strength testing; 30 of these blocks were surface treated and the rest were not. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA, the Tukey post-hoc test, and independent t-test, and the level of significance was set at ${\alpha}=.05$. RESULTS. The surface treatment of the zirconia using ZSAT increased the surface roughness, and tensile strength test results showed that the ZSAT group significantly increased the bond strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain compared to the untreated group (36 MPa vs. 30 MPa). Optimal etching time was determined to be 2 hours based on the scratch test results. CONCLUSION. ZSAT increases the surface roughness of zirconia, and this might contribute to the increased interfacial bond strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain.
In order to know the effect of dentin bonding agents on the restoration of cervical abrasion, Scotchbond Multipurpose Single Bond and Clearfil Liner Bond 2 were used in 51 teeth with abrasion lesion and normal teeth. The surface structure and dentinal tubules of acid etched dentin and resin replica were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The interfacial morphology between dentin and adhesives was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Following results were obtained. 1. The hybrid layer and resin tag of the dentin showing cross-sectional surface of dentinal tubules are thicker and longer than those of dentin showing oblique surface of dentinal tubules. 2. The sclerotic cast was frequently observed in dentinal tubule, and the cast looked like cuboidal or rhomboidal-shaped crystals clumped from outer side to inner side. 3. The formation of hybrid layer and resin tag was the most prominent in Scotchbond Multipurpose group, whereas Clearfil Liner Bond 2 group showed very poor formation. The formation of hybrid layer and resin tag in Single Bond group was less than Scotchbond Multipurpose group.
The purpose of this study was to compare shear bond strength and interfacial pattern of composite bond-ed to dentin using self-etching adhesive systems. Sixty extracted human molars with exposed occlusal dentin were divided into four groups and bonded with four adhesives and composites. Single Bond/Filtek Z 350(SB), Tyrian SPE-One-Step Plus/Aelitefil(TY), Prompt L-Pop/Filtek Z 250(LP), and One-Up Bond F/palfique Toughwell(OU). The results of this study were as follows; 1 Shear bond strength for OU was significantly lower than that of other groups(p<0.05). No significant difference was founded among SB, TY, and LP. 2. Failure modes to dentin showed adhesive and mixed for SB TY and LP, but them for OU showed adhesive in all spceimens. 3. Dentin-resin interface showed close adaptation for SB, TY, and LP, but it showed gap for OU. 4. The hybrid layers for TY, LP OU were thinner than that of SB. Adhesive layers were observed between composite and hybrid layer, which were 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick for TY and 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick for OU.
