  • Electrical characteristics at the p-GaP semiconductor/CsNO3 electrolyte interfaces were investigated. It is found that such interfacial phenomena are well analyzed by semiconductor-semiconductor pn junction diode models and image charge effects of semiconductor-vacuum interfaces. The formation processes of electrical double layers and their potential variations are verified using cyclic voltammetric methods. The interfacial current are influenced by Cs+ ion coverage onto the semiconductor electrode surface and structure of electrical double layer.

  • The aim of this analysis is to verify the electrical compatibility of the interfaces which exist between COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) AOCS(Attitude Orbit Control Subsystem) equipments and external equipments. For each interface, this study checked the compatibility between equipments for the power links, commands, digital telemetry, analog telemetry and failure condition. In addition with this interface compatibility verification, this study outputs the electrical and manufacturing constraints to be applied at harness level.

  • This paper presents a part of micormechanics-based elastic modeling (Lee and Pyo, 2007) of particle-reinforced composites containing slightly weakened interfaces. The Eshelby's tensor for a damaged ellipsoidal inclusion to model particles with slightly weakened interfaces is incorporated into a micormechanical formulation by Ju and Chen (1994). A damage model in accordance with the Weibull's probabilistic function is also developed to simulate the progression of weakened interface in the composites.

  • Charge injection at electrode-organic interfaces is key to the performance, lifetime and stability of organic electronic devices. The link between fundamental material properties and the energy-level alignment at electrode-organic interfaces will be discussed. In addition the impact of the injection barrier height-a parameterization of the energylevel alignment-on device characteristics will also be discussed.

  • The alumina-aluminum solid-liquid interfaces were directly observed at atomic scale by heating the alumina single crystal in high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM) owing to the electron beam damage processes, Atomic ordering in the first several layers of the liquid was clearly resolved adjacent to the alumina surface and its relevance to the single crystal growth was examined with the real-time observations.

  • Adhesion and mechanical reliability of silicon/epoxy/polyimide interfaces are critical issues for flexible electronics. Bonds between these interfaces are mainly hydrogen bonds, so their adhesion is weaker than cohesive fracture toughness and vulnerable to moisture. In order to enhance adhesion and suppress moisture-assisted debonding, UV/Ozone treatment and innovative sol-gel derived hybrid layers were applied to silicon/epoxy/polyimide interfaces. The fracture energy and subcritical crack growth rate were measured by using a double cantilever beam (DCB) fracture mechanics test. Results showed that UV/Ozone treatment increased the adhesion, but was not effective for improving reliability against humidity. However, by applying sol-gel derived hybrid layers, adhesion increase as well as suppresion of moisture-assisted cracking were achieved.

  • This study deals with a numerical investigation of load transfer along interfaces of jacketed columns using finite element models. Appropriate plasticity and constitutive models are used to simulate the response of concrete and steel bars. Experimental data were used to calibrate the simulation of mechanical characteristics. The different compressive strength of core and jacket concrete, the confinement ratio, the dowels' diameter size and the load pattern shapes were considered. The path diagrams along the interfaces elucidate the areas around the dowel bars where due to stress concentration plastic hinges and intense discontinuities are created. The stress flow also depicts the contribution of confinement of the jacketed area to the overall resonant load capacity of the core column. The scope of the research is to identify and quantify the shear transfer along the interfaces of strengthened elements.

  • Discontinuous solutions or interfaces are common in nature, for examples, shock waves or material interfaces. However, their numerical computation is difficult by the feature of discontinuities. In this paper, we summarize the numerical approaches for discontinuities and interfaces appearing mostly in the system of hyperbolic conservation laws, and explain various numerical methods for them. We explain two numerical approaches to handle discontinuities in the solution: shock capturing and shock tracking, and illustrate their underlying algorithms and mathematical problems. The front tracking method is explained in details and the level set method is outlined briefly. The several applications of front tracking are illustrated, and the research issues in this field are discussed.

  • Recently, usability has become very important in voice user interface systems. In this paper, we have designed and implemented a wizard-of-oz (WOZ) usability testing tool for command-and-control voice user interfaces. We have proposed the VUIDML (Voice User Interface Design Markup Language) to design the usability test scenario of command-and-control voice interfaces in the early design stages. For highly satisfactory voice user interfaces, we have to select highly preferred voice commands and prompts. In VUIDML, we can specify possible prompt candidates. The WOZ usability testing tool can also be used to collect user-preferred voice commands and feedback from real users.
