  • Since the translocator protein (TSPO) is involved in neurodegeneration diseases, many scientists' interest has been focused on the development of a ligand targeting TSPO. A novel compound based on pyrazolo[1,5 -a] pyrimidine structure, DPA-714, has been studied and considered as a TSPO ligand with high affinity. In this highlight review, several researches for the novel radioligand for the translocator protein are illustrated.

  • The study empirically examines the classic hypothesis on resource-based view(RBV) theory, which is the possible relationship between competitive advantage and performance. For the study, we have surveyed 198 hospital administrators in Korea. By testing the hypotheses at conceptual level, a more robust approach, we found that (1) if a hospital possesses and exploits resources and capabilities that are both valuable and rare, it will attain a competitive advantage, and (2) the attaintment of such advantage will enable the hospital to improve its performance. The results may be interest to both academics and practitioners. From an academic standpoint, the study more accurately captures the dynamics of the theory by pairing resources-capabilities as opposed to individual resources or capabilities. From a practitioner perspective, it is suggested that hospital managers need no necessarily seek out novel resources and capabilities, but rather develop novel ways in which to combine those resources and capabilities to which they do have access.

  • In the development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) power machines, HTS bushing is one of core technologies. In particular, the insulation body with sheds and electrical insulation at cryogenic temperature have attracted a great deal of interest from the view point of the size, weight and efficiency of bushing. In this study, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of various insulators for body in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) were investigated. And the surface discharge distance, collar length of GFRP sheds were studied. To emit bubbles between sheds, the shape and arrangement of shed were studied. The shed structure for 60 kV class HTS bushing were designed with regular arrangement.

  • Landscape ecology is an emerging interdisciplinary ecology field to understand the holistic human and natural systems on the basis of concept and database obtained from pure ecology. Landscape ecology is an integrated ecology widely available for environmental science such as nature conservation and sustainable land-use planning. It is also a practical study as an applied ecology to restore and to manage local environment. Landscape ecological study is realized by embodiment of human disturbance system which is rigorously extending on natural system. Considering Korean status without landscape ecological studies, we briefly reviewed establishing process, study goal and methodology of landscape ecology as well as the related several concepts through current landscape ecological studies in the world. We hope that this paper will be helpful to ecologists having interest in landscape ecology.

  • Recently, the public interest for infrastructure safety has been growing, but the process of data acquisition and management system for safety is being carried out in an inefficient manner. The data obtained during the inspection for the safety of infrastructure tends to be documented using papers, which is not efficient in the stage of post analyses. The information technology (IT), which is rapidly being developed, is applied to the new system as a solution. Information technology provides valuable tools for converting and generating digital data, handling the history of defects, and assessing the condition and estimating the service life of infrastructure. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Infrastructure Management System(IMS). It is expected that the IMS would minimize the manpower, time and maintenance cost, and improve the safety of infrastructure.

  • Large welded structures, including ships and offshore structures, are normally in operation under cyclic fatigue loadings. These structures include many geometric discontinuities, as well as material discontinuities due to weld joints. The fatigue strength at these hot spots is very important for the structural performance. In the past, various Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques have been developed to detect fatigue cracks and to estimate their location and size. However, an important limitation of most of the existing NDE methods is that they are off line; the normal operation of the structure has to be interrupted, and the device often has to be disassembled. This study explores the development of a structural health monitoring system, with a special interest in applying the technique to welded structural members in ship and offshore structures. In particular, the impedance based structural health monitoring technique that employs the coupling effect of piezoceramic (PZT) materials and structures is investigated.

  • Carbon nanomaterials in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells have attracted a great deal of interest for the development of high-efficiency, flexible, and low-cost solar cells. Due to the complicated structure of OPV devices, the electrical properties and dispersion behavior of the carbon nanomaterials should be controlled carefully in order for them to be used as materials in OPV devices. In this paper, a fundamental theory of the electrical properties and dispersion behavior of carbon nanomaterials is reviewed. Based on this review, a state-of-the-art OPV device composed of carbon nanomaterials, along with issues related to such devices, are discussed.

  • Antimicrobial cationic peptides have attracted increasing research and clinical interest as a natural antibiotics due to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activites and the rapid development of multidrug-resistant pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, first, we synthesized artificial fusion partner and cationic peptide genes (lactoferricin, magainin, protegrin-1, and indolicidin). Second, we constructed recombinant expression vectors and then transformed Pichia pastoris. Finally, expressed cationic peptides were purified and tested for their antimicrobial activites. Antimicrobial activity has been tested upon the appearance of clearing zone on the plate with the lawn of gram negative E.coli XL- I blue and garm positive Staphylococcus aureus. Protegrin-1 and Indolicidin have apparant activity of cationic peotides. This fusion technique may lead to a general and suitable tool for production of pure antimicrobial cationic peptides in Pichia pastoris.

  • The often raised arguments against allowing Chaebol's ownership of banks, that is, 1) the banks may virtually be transformed into private cash vaults of owners, and 2) conflicts of interests may develop and be possibly abused by chaebols, do not hold under ordinary free market circumstances. Only under some special circumstances in which government imposes artificial regulations on banks such as interest rate ceilings, or provides preferential protection like guaranteeing bank's liabilities, the aforementioned worries can be materialized.

  • Recently, construction materials have been quickly advancing. Especially, the rate of development of cement based construction materials is much quicker than steel or composite materials. In order to optimize the ductility and strength of cement based materials, Micro-Mechanics based fiber concrete called Engineered Cement Composite (ECC) has been developed and studied extensively by many researchers in the field due to ECC's remarkable flexural strain and strength capacities, many leading nation (i.e., US, Japan and European countries have reached the point of being able to use ECC in actual constructions. But, due to the belated interest in the field, Korea is lagging behind the leading countries. ECC's ability to use its short fibers to bridge micro-cracks (50-80㎛ in width) allows great ductility and strength. In this study, it is confirmed excellency of ECC through the test of tensile strength.
