  • The effect of solidification rate on micro-segregation in investment casting of IN738LC superalloy was studied. In Ni-based superalloys, the micro-segregation of solute atoms is formed due to limited diffusion during cast and solidification. The microstructure of cast Ni-based superalloys is largely divided into dendrite core of initial solidification and interdendrite of final solidification. In particular, mosaic shaped eutectic γ/γ' and carbides are formed in the interdendrite of the final solidification region in some cases. The micro-segregation phenomena formed in regions of dendrite core and interdendrite including eutectic γ/γ' and carbides were analyzed using OM, SEM/EDS and micro Vickers hardness. As a result of analysis, the lack of (Cr, W) and the accumulation of Ti were measured in the eutectic γ/γ', and the accumulation of (Cr, Mo) and the lack of Ti were measured in the interdendrite between dendrite and eutectic. Carbides formed in interdendritic region were composed of (Ti, W, Mo, C). The segregation applied to each microstructure is mainly due to the formation of γ' with Ni3(Al,Ti) composition. The Ni accumulation accompanied by Cr depletion, and the Ti accumulated in the eutectic region as a γ' forming elements. The Mo tends to diffuse out from the dendrite core to the interdendrite, and the W diffuse out from the interdendrite to the dendrite core. Therefore, the accumulation of Mo in the interdendrite and the deficiency of W occur in the eutectic region located in the interdendrite. Heat treatment makes the degree of the micro-segregation decrease due to the diffusion during solid solution. This study could be applied to the heat treatment technology for the micro-segregation control in cast Ni-based superalloys.

  • Many research efforts on the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels have been reported, but little research has been conducted on the effect of nitrogen for the weldment of stainless steels by the seal-weld method. Therefore, this work focused on the determining the corrosion resistance of tube/tube sheet mock-up specimen for sea water condensers, and elucidating the effect of shielding nitrogen gas on its resistance. The pitting corrosion of autogenously welded specimen propagated preferentially along the dendritic structure. Regardless of the percent of shielding nitrogen gas, the analyzed nitrogen contents were very much lower than that of the bulk specimen. This can be arisen because the nitrogen in shielding gas may partly dissolve into the weldment, but simultaneously during the welding process, nitrogen in the alloy may escape into the atmosphere. However, the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the dendrite arm, regardless of the shielding gas percent; and the PREN of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the base metal; the PREN of the dendrite arm was lower than that of the base metal because of the formation of (Cr, Mo) rich phases by welding.

  • The influence of solidification condition on the segregation of SiC particles in the $Al-xSi/6wt%SiC_p$(x: 6, 10, 14, 18${\cdot}$wt%) composites was investigated in the study. The results are as follows: 1) During the counter-gravity unidirectional solidification of $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composites melt, most of the SiC particles are pushed to the top of the casting. 2) The SiC particles pushing in the $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composite melts are not observed, when the interface velocity of melts increases more than 1.41 ${\mu}m/sec$. 3) The SiC particles are entrapped in the interdendrite regions, when the sizes of SiC particles in the $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composites are large than ${\varphi}22{\mu}m$.

  • During casting of A390 billet by Hot Top process, bosses were formed on the surface of cast bar. The formation of boss is assumed due to a large amount of latent heat released during the formation of primary Si in A390 alloy. The low melting point elements around primary Si are locally remelted to liquid and interdendrite offers a path by which the liquid can pass through to the surface. Addition of Sr decreases the amount of latent heat by preventing the formation of primary Si near the surface and thus suppresses the formation of boss on the surface of cast bar. Therefore, the formation of boss could be reduced remarkably when the casting condition was selected to extract the latent heat outward easily.

  • Microstructural characteristics and strengthening behavior in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys have been investigated by a combination of optical, secondary electron and transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and hardness and tensile, creep property measurements. The result have been compared with those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys. The as-squeeze cast microstructure consisted of dendrite ${\alpha}-Mg$, interdendrite or intergranular $Mg_7Zn_3$ and fine dispersoids of $ZnZr_2$. The size of secondary solidification phases in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was significantly smaller than that of the Mg-5wt%Zn alloys due to the existence of fine dispersoid of $ZnZr_2$ which also effected the refinement of grain size. TEM study showed that the main cause of age hardening is formation of fine rodlike ${\beta}_1\;'$ precipitates as well as fine $ZnZr_2$ dispersoids. Due to the observed microstructural characteristics mechanical propeties of Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was found to be superior to those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys.

  • The directed energy deposited (DED) alloys show higher hardness values than the welded alloys due to the finer microstructure following the high cooling rate. However, defects such as microcracks, pores, and the residual stress are remained within the DED alloy. These defects deteriorate the wear behavior so post-processing such as heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) are applied to DED alloys to reduce the defects. HIP was chosen in this study because the high pressure and temperature uniformly reduced the defects. The HIP is processed at 1150℃ under 100 MPa for 4 hours. After HIP, microcracks are disappeared and porosity is reduced by 86.9%. Carbides are spherodized due to the interdiffusion of Cr and C between the dendrite and interdendrite region. After HIP, the nanohardness (GPa) of carbides increased from 11.1 to 12, and the Co matrix decreased from 8.8 to 7.9. Vickers hardness (HV) decreased by 18.9 % after HIP. The dislocation density (10-2/m2) decreased from 7.34 to 0.34 and the residual stress (MPa) changed from tensile 79 to a compressive -246 by HIP. This study indicates that HIP is effective in reducing defects, and the HIP DED Stellite 6 exhibits a higher HV than welded Stellite 6.
