The use of beamforming is effective for users in limited power environments. However, when it is applied to the downlink of a cellular system with universal frequency reuse, users near the sector boundary may experience significant interference from more than one sector. The use of a minimum mean square error (MMSE)-type receiver may not sufficiently cancel out the interference unless a sufficient number of receive antennas are used. In this paper, we consider the use of inter-sector beamforming that cooperates with a neighboring sector in the same cell to mitigate this interference problem in time-division duplex (TDD) environments. The proposed scheme can avoid interference from an adjacent sector in the same cell, while enhancing the transmit array gain by using the TDD reciprocity. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) and the output capacity when applied to an MMSE-type receiver. The beamforming mode can be analytically switched between the inter-sector and the single-sector mode based on the long-term channel information. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by computer simulation.

In this paper, the author presents the MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) receiver algorithm with the capability of inter-cell or inter-sector interference cancellation over multi-antenna OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems. As contrast with the previous research dealing with the filtering scheme at the time domain, the proposed algorithm is presented as the pre-filtering scheme which can be applicable to the frequency domain. Note that the proposed one can be implemented only by pilot symbols which are used in the channel estimation. In addition, it is analytically confirmed that the proposed scheme can be applied for either MIMO( C-SM(Collaborative-Spatial Multiplexing)) interference or SIMO(Single-Input Multi-Out) interference. The proposed receiver algorithm is verified by simulations over UL-PUSC SR off in IEEE 802.16e standard. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed one can be applicable regardless of the kind of interference. Furthermore, it is verified that the performance is guaranteed even under Ole severe effect of interference and the improvement of system throughput is guaranteed.

A cellular system with fixed relays is considered to be a technology that can support high data transmission service to wide areas. However, either inter-cell interference or inter-sector interference that can be produced by adding relays to the cellular system with fixed relays does not guarantee high link performance to deteriorate function, so that resource allocation for avoidance of interference is very much important. In the paper, the cellular system performance with repeater relay has been compared with the cellular system performance with relay, and cell coverage expansion at the use of relay repeater has been compared. To compare, this paper has suggested resource allocation method to avoid inter-cell interference and inter-sector interference at installation of fixed relay on the cellular system. The proposed method can allocate different frequency resources on adjacent base stations and relays to reduce interference and to expand high data transmission area, and all of frequency bands are used at each sector to elevate efficiency of the frequency when base stations and relays operate simultaneously.

In this paper, an intercell interference (ICI) reduction technique is proposed for OFDM-based cellular systems using the concept of virtual multiple antenna where multiple antenna techniques are performed on a set of subcarriers, not on the actual antenna array. The proposed technique is especially effective for user terminals with a single antenna at cell boundary in fully-loaded OFDM cellular systems with a frequency reuse factor equal to 1. Proposed ICI reduction techniques developed for SISO and MISO environments are shown to be robust to symbol timing offsets and efficient for various cell environments by adjusting group size depending on the number of adjacent cells. Also, the concept of a virtual signature randomizer (VSR) is introduced to improve channel separability in the virtual MIMO approach. It is shown by simulation that the proposed techniques are effective in reducing ICI and inter-sector interference compared with the conventional methods.

In this paper, we propose UCA algorithms that are applied to the unified inter-cell interference mitigation through frequency plannings in OFDMA cellular systems. Under three frequency plannings, UCA algorithms allocate frequency channels to UEs(User Equipments). Proposed UCA algorithms require the information of received signal power from home sector and neighbor sectors respectively. We compare all possible combinations of UCA algorithms and frequency plannings through compute simulation. A primary performance measure is the low 5th percentile of SINR at UEs. The proposed UCA algorithms can avoid the interference to neighbor cells by allocating relatively low transmit power to centrally-located UEs and cancel inter-cell interference at cell-edge UEs by a coordinated symbol repetition. We show that UCA algorithm 2 applied in frequency planning 1 is promising among other combinations of UCA algorithms and frequency palnnings in terms of the low 5th percentile of SINR at UEs.

To cope with recently increasing demand for data traffics, heterogeneous networks have been actively studied, where small cells are deployed within a macro cell coverage with the same frequency band. To mitigate the interference from the macro cell to small cells, an enhanced Inter-cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) technique has been proposed, where ABS (Almost Blank Subframe) is used in time domain. However, there is a waste of resource since no data is transmitted in a macro-cell in ABS. In this paper, we propose a new interference management method by using a 3D sector beam based on Active Antenna System (AAS), where Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to reduce the antenna gain toward a small-cell. With the proposed scheme, the macro-cell and small cells can transmit data at the same time with the AAS antenna pattern generating reduced interference to small cells. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by using an LTE-Advanced system level simulator.

In LTE-Advanced systems, every sector uses the entire range of the frequency resource, and when the UEs are located at a cell edge, user throughputs degrade due to the interferences from the adjacent cells. In this paper, we propose a combined scheme for inter-cell interference avoidance and power control. In the proposed algorithm, the sectors consist of the right edge, the left edge and the center for resource allocation and we control the transmission power to improve the user throughputs at the edge of each cell. Using a system level simulation, we analyze low 5th percentile and average user throughputs of the UEs who are located the cell, center and edge when the inter-cell interference avoidance and the power control are combined.

In order to accommodate huge number of antennas in a limited antenna size, a large scale antenna array is expected to have a three dimensional (3D) array structure. By using the Active Antenna Systems (AAS), the weights of the antenna elements arranged vertically could be configured adaptively. Then, a degree of freedom (DOF) in the vertical plane is provided for system design. So the three-dimension MIMO (3D MIMO) could be realized to solve the actual implementation problem of the massive MIMO. However, in 3D massive MIMO systems, the pilot contamination problem studied in 2D massive MIMO systems and the inter-cell interference as well as inter-vertical sector interference in 3D MIMO systems with vertical sectorization exist simultaneously, when the number of antenna is not large enough. This paper investigates the interference management towards the above challenges in 3D massive MIMO systems. Here, vertical sectorization based on vertical beamforming is included in the concerned systems. Firstly, a cooperative joint vertical beams adjustment and pilot assignment scheme is developed to improve the channel estimation precision of the uplink with pilots being reused across the vertical sectors. Secondly, a downlink interference coordination scheme by jointly controlling weight vectors and power of vertical beams is proposed, where the estimated channel state information is used in the optimization modelling, and the performance loss induced by pilot contamination could be compensated in some degree. Simulation results show that the proposed joint optimization algorithm with controllable vertical beams' weight vectors outperforms the method combining downtilts adjustment and power allocation.

Even though extensive research results have been applied to wireless cellular systems to improve their capacity and coverage, severe performance degradation experienced in cell boundary areas still remains as a major limiting factor to prohibit further improvement of user equipment (UE) throughput. In the Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) standard of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Some advanced techniques have been introduced to overcome this "cell-edge problem", including coordinated multipoint transmission and reception (CoMP) and inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). In this paper, we propose yet another strategy to improve the performance of low-tier UEs by using the concept of multiple beam direction patterns (BDPs). Such multiple BDPs can be implemented using multi-layer antenna arrays stacked vertically at base station (BS) sites to transmit signals in different main beam directions. In comparison to conventional three-sector antennas with a fixed beam pattern, the proposed methods makes signal transmission in a rotational fashion to significantly enhance the reception quality of UEs located near sector (or cell) edge areas, preventing the situation where certain UEs are marginally covered by the BS for the whole transmission time. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional three-sector transmission by 171% in low 5% UEs in terms of the UE throughput.
