  • Short beam tests of GFRP and CFRP specimens exposed to high temperature were conducted to measure the inter-laminar shear strength. For the phase I test, the exposure time and temperature were varied to measure reduction in the strength due to the applied conditions. As a results, the critical temperature was found to $270^{\circ}C$ for the both FRP reinforcements. The high temperature, which causes 50% loss of inter-laminar shear strength, is defined as the critical temperature in this study. It should be noted that the critical temperature for the inter-laminar shear strength is mainly dependent on resin properties not on fiber type. In the phase II test, the effect of exposure time was investigated at intervals of 0.25hour for the critical temperature. All test results demonstrate that the exposure time effect is not significant compared to the maximum exposure temperature, but it is not negligible and, moreover, is significant at the critical temperature.

  • Mechanical properties of GFRP rebars significantly decrease due to high temperature as well as alkalinity of concrete. This study focuses on the long-term reduction of inter-laminar shear strength of pre-damaged GFRP rebars by high temperature. For this investigation, bare GFRP rebar specimens were exposed to $270^{\circ}C$ for 1hour and then immerged in alkali solution for several months and tested in shear. No thermally conditioned specimens were immerged and tested for the comparisons. In results, the reduction of thermally damaged GFRP rebars was greater than that of no thermally damaged ones. Based on the accelerated experimental test data, an polynomial equation is presented for prediction of long-term residual inter-laminar shear strength of GFRP rebars previously damaged by high temperature.

  • This study compared and evaluated the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer (CFRTP) mixed with nanofillers. After mixing various nanofillers such as Multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), Silicon oxide, Core shell rubber, and Aramid nanofiber with Polyamide 6 (PA6) resin, this is used as a matrix to create a carbon fiber reinforced composite material (CFRP) was manufactured and its physical properties were measured. Depending on the type and mixing ratio of nanofiller, tensile strength, inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS), and Izod impact strength were measured. In terms of tensile strength and impact strength, the highest values were obtained when mixing core shell rubber, however the ILSS was optimal when mixing less than 1 wt.% of silicon oxide.

  • The lightweight industry continuously demands reliable near-net-shape fabrication where the preform just out-of-machine is close to the final shape. In this study, different half-finished preforms are made π-beams. Then the preforms are unfolded to make a 3D shape with integrated structure of fibers, providing easier handling in the further processing of composites. Several 3D textile preforms are made using weaving technique and are examined after resin infusion for mechanical properties such as inter-laminar shear strength, compressive strength and tensile strength. Considering that the time and labor are important parameters in modern production, 3D weaving technique reduces the manufacturing steps and therefore the costs, such as hand-lay up of textile layers, cutting, and converting into preform shape. Hence this 3D weaving technique offers many possibilities for new applications with efficient composite production.

  • Fabrication of carbon fiber reinforced composites was carried out by hand lay-up method. Carbon nanofibers and SiC nanofibers were used as filler in the composites fabrication. Carbon nanofibers, one of the new carbon materials, have 5∼500 nm in diameter and 5-10 nm in length. SiC nanofibers were modified by silicon monoxide vapor with carbon nanofibers. The composites were carbonized at 1000$^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere, and then densified by molten pitches impregnated in vacuum. Multiple cycles of liquid pitch impregnation and carbonization were carried out to obtain a desired density. The composites were characterized by density, microstructure. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) test was performed for mechanical properties. For the new application, the microwave reflective proeprty of composites was investigated. Dielectric constant and permeability spectrum were measured in 12∼18 GHz frequency ranges. On the basis of the wave propagation theory in a lossy media, the reflection loss from the composite inter-layer was predict as a function of frequency.

  • Mechanical test of the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) composite specimen was performed based on the ASTM code at the ambient and low temperature. Tension, compression in-plane shear, and inter-laminar shear properties of the composite laminates were evaluated experimentally using the Universal Testing Machine(UTM) system at the temperature of $24^{\circ}C$,$-76^{\circ}C$ , and $-196^{\circ}C$. From the test results it was found that the CFRP chosen for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research(KSTAR) magnet supporting post had smaller tensile strength and larger compressive strength at the low temperature than those of the ambient temperature because of material ductility.

  • In this paper, two different experiments, namely, salt water spray and salt water immersion, were performed to reproduce the contact of composites with the seawater for three kinds of woven fabric composite material systems which would be used for the WIG(wing in ground effect)craft. After aging 140 days in the salt water environment, material properties of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite such as tensile, compressive and shear stiffness and strength, and inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) were measured. By comparing baseline material properties with degraded ones, the effects of the salt water environment on the composite mechanical properties were evaluated. From the experiments, it was confirmed that the difference in aging conditions had very small influence on composite properties. And it was found that tensile strength of carbon/epoxy composites showed little degradation, but much more degradation was observed in glass/epoxy composites. And large degradations on matrix dominant properties were observed. The salt water could damage the fiber-matrix interface, matrix properties and the glass fiber.

  • In the present work, novel biocomposites made with biodegradable Lyocell woven fabrics and poly (butylene succinate) were successfully fabricated for the first time. Lyocell/poly(butylene succinate) biocomposites with different fiber loadings of 0, 30, 40, 50 and 60 wt% were prepared by compression molding with a sheet interleaving manner. The effect of Lyocell fabric loading on the interlaminar shear strength, tensile and flexural properties, heat deflection temperature, thermal expansion behavior, and thermal stability of the biocomposites was investigated. The properties strongly depended on the fabric loading and the results were consistent with each other. It was demonstrated that the Lyocell fabrics played a remarkable role in improving the properties of poly(butylene succinate) resin by incorporating the fabrics into the resin. The greatest inter-laminar, tensile, flexural and thermal properties of the biocomposites were obtained with Lyocell fabrics of 50% by weight.

  • In this paper, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles were added between the sheets of prepreg, and the effect of on many properties of BN-embedded carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated. The amount of BN particles which corresponds with 0 to 15 wt% of total resin weight was used as an additive material. The tensile strength and the inter-laminar shear strength of BN-embedded CFRP samples were improved by maximally 13.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. The tendency changes of thermal, electrical conductivities and the morphology of cross-section of CFRPs were also observed. This study suggests the possibility of controlling the characteristics of carbon fiber-BN-epoxy composites to use for aerospace applications.
