  • This study explains the GIS database of flood inundation area developed for Samsung-1 Drainage Sector, Seoul, Korea. The XP-SWMM dual drainage model was developed for the study area, and the time series observed at the watershed outlet was used to obtain the watershed time of concentration and to calibrate the XP-SWMM model. The rainfall scenario was developed by dividing the 40 minute watershed time of concentration into two 20-minute time steps and then applying the gradually increasing 5 mm/hr interval rainfall intensity to each of the time step up to 200 mm/hr, which is the probable maximum precipitation of the study area. The developed rainfall scenarios was used as the input of the XP-SWMM model to obtain the database of the flood inundation area. The analysis on the developed GIS database revealed that: (1) For the same increment of the rainfall, the increase of the flooded area can be different, and this was caused by topographic characteristics and spatial formation of pipe network of the study area; (2) For the same flooded area, the spatial extent can be significantly different depending on the temporal distribution of rainfall; and (3) For the same amount of the design rainfall, the flood inundation area and the extent can be significantly different depending on the temporal distribution of rainfall.

  • We performed landslide flume tests to analyze characteristics of landslide occurrence and change in the ground materials due to rainfall infiltration. The test apparatus is composed of flume, rainfall simulator, and measurement sensors and landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall (Intensity=200 mm/hr) sprinkled at the above of an artificial slope. The measurement sensors for matric suction and volumetric water content were installed with 3 sets at shallow (GL-0.2 m), middle (GL-0.4 m), and deep depth (GL-0.6 m) in the slope and the tests were performed with in-situ, loose, and dense condition of each weathered soils of granite, gneiss, and mudstone. The analyses show that surface erosion was dominant in initial time of the test due to heavy rainfall and then landslides occur following locally happened transverse tension cracks. The characteristics of landslide were both shallow failure because of a spread of wetting front induced by the rainfall infiltration and retrogressive failure. While the matric suction was decreased rapidly without any precursor in the soil saturation, the volumetric water content was increased gradually, reached its maximum value, and then decreased rapidly with landslide.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of orographic effect using radar data for the Chungju dam basin. First, independent rainfall events were selected by applying the IETD (Interevent Time Definition) and rainfall threshold. Among those independent rainfall events, rather strong events were selected to decide the occurrence condition of orographic effect. Also, the average reflectivity was calculated for the entire period and for the period of storm center, and the change in reflectivity was analyzed by comparing the average reflectivity to that in the mountain area. Important rainfall factors were selected and applied to the logistic regression model to decide the occurrence condition of orographic effect. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, evaluation of the radar data along the passing line of a storm showed the increase of radar reflectivity in the mountain area. Second, the result of logistic regression analysis showed that the orographic effect in the Chungju Dam Basin mostly occurred when the rainfall intensity was higher than 4 mm/hr, the storm velocity was lower than 4 km/hr, and the approach angle was $90^{\circ}{\pm}5^{\circ}$.

  • I. Title of the Study Studies on the Development of Improved Subsurface Drainage Methods. -Drainage Performance of Various Subsurface Drain Materials- II. Object of the Study Studies were carried out to select the drain material having the highest performance of drainage; And to develop the water budget model which is necessary for the planning of the drainage project and the establishment of water management standards in the water-logged paddy field. III. Content and Scope of the Study 1. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory by using a sand tank model. The drainage performance of various drain materials was compared evaluated. 2. A water budget model was established. Various parameters necessary for the model were investigated by analyzing existing data and measured data from the experimental field. The adaptability of the model was evaluated by comparing the estimated values to the field data. IV. Results and Recommendations 1. A corrugated tube enveloped with gravel or mat showed the highest drainage performance among the eight materials submmitted for the experiment. 2. The drainage performance of the long cement tile(50 cm long) was higher than that of the short cement tile(25 cm long). 3. Rice bran was superior to gravel in its' drain performance. 4. No difference was shown between a grave envelope and a P.V.C. wool mat in their performance of drainage. Continues investigation is needed to clarify the envelope performance. 5. All the results described above were obtained from the laboratory tests. A field test is recommended to confirm the results obtained. 6. As a water balance model of a given soil profile, the soil moisture depletion D, could be represented as follows; $$D=\Sigma\limit_{t=1}^{n}(Et-R_{\ell}-I+W_d)..........(17)$$ 7. Among the various empirical formulae for potential evapotranspiration, Penman's formular was best fit to the data observed with the evaporation pans in Jinju area. High degree of positive correlation between Penman;s predicted data and observed data was confirmed. The regression equation was Y=1.4X-22.86, where Y represents evaporation rate from small pan, in mm/100 days, and X represents potential evapotranspiration rate estimated by Penman's formular. The coefficient of correlation was r=0.94.** 8. To estimate evapotranspiration in the field, the consumptive use coefficient, Kc, was introduced. Kc was defined by the function of the characteristics of the crop soil as follows; $Kc=Kco{\cdot}Ka+Ks..........(20)$ where, Kco, Ka ans Ks represents the crop coefficient, the soil moisture coefficient, and the correction coefficient, respectively. The value of Kco and Ka was obtained from the Fig.16 and the Fig.17, respectively. And, if $Kco{\cdot}Ka{\geq}1.0,$ then Ks=0, otherwise, Ks value was estimated by using the relation; $Ks=1-Kco{\cdot}Ka$. 9. Into type formular, $r_t=\frac{R_{24}}{24}(\frac{b}{\sqrt{t}+a})$, was the best fit one to estimate the probable rainfall intensity when daily rainfall and rainfall durations are given as input data, The coefficient a and b are shown on the Table 16. 10. Japanese type formular, $I_t=\frac{b}{\sqrt{t}+a}$, was the best fit one to estimate the probable rainfall intensity when the rainfall duration only was given. The coefficient a and b are shown on the Table 17. 11. Effective rainfall, Re, was estimated by using following relationships; Re=D, if $R-D\geq}0$, otherwise, Re=R. 12. The difference of rainfall amount from soil moisture depletion was considered as the amount of drainage required. In this case, when Wd=O, Equation 24 was used, otherwise two to three days of lag time was considered and correction was made by use of storage coefficient. 13. To evaluate the model, measured data and estimated data was compared, and relative error was computed. 5.5 percent The relative error was 5.5 percent. 14. By considering the water budget in Jinju area, it was shown that the evaporation amount was greater than the rainfall during period of October to March in next year. This was the behind reasonning that the improvement of surface drainage system is needed in Jinju area.

  • The rainfall intensity-duration curve (I-D curve) was used for selecting the dredging time of sediments behind a debris barrier which is located at the study area in Inje-gun, Kangwon Province. The I-D curve was newly suggested by using the data of rainfall-induced landslides for about 30 years from June to September in Kangwon Province. According to the monitoring results, the landslides have been not occurred during the monitoring period of the dredged sediments management system at the study area, and also all of the rainfall events were located below the I-D curve. The weight of the dredged sediments measured at the management system in the field was increased but the weight increment was small. It means that the increase of the dredged sediments was not the effect of landslide but the effect of soil erosion at the ground surface due to heavy rainfall. The weight of the dredged sediments behind a debris barrier could be known in real time using the rainfall data measured at the management system. Also, when the I-D curve is used with the management system, it is possible to select the optimum dredging time for sediments behind debris barrier.

  • The objectives of this study are to develop the flow nomograph for real-time flood forecasting and to assess its applicability in restored Cheonggye stream. The Cheonggye stream basin has the high impermeability and short concentration time and complicated hydrological characteristics. Therefore, the flood prediction method using runoff model is ineffective due to the limit of forecast. Flow nomograph which is able to forecast flood only with rainfall information. To set the forecast criteria of flow nomograph at selected flood forecast points and calculated criterion flood water level for each point, and in order to reflect various flood events set up simulated rainfall scenario and calculated rainfall intensity and rainfall duration time for each condition of rainfall. Besides, using a rating curve, determined scope of flood discharge following criterion flood water level and using SWMM model calculated flood discharge for each forecasting point. Using rainfall information following rainfall scenario calculated above and flood discharge following criterion flood water level developed flow nomograph and evaluated it by applying it to real flood event. As a result of performing this study, the applicability of flow nomograph to the basin of Cheonggye stream appeared to be high. In the future, it is reckoned to have high applicability as a method of prediction of flood of urban stream basin like Cheonggye stream.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate throughfall, stemflow, interception loss and net rainfall in relation to rainfall interception, and to understand the factors affecting interception process at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand in the Research Forests of Seoul National University, located in Choosan, Kwangyang, Chollanamdo. 1. The gross rainfall during the period of field observation was 3,107.6mm(average 1,035.9mm/year). Most of the daily rainfall intensity was under 30mm, which was 90% in 1992, 81% in 1993 and 88% in 1994. 2. In this study the throughfall, stemflow, interception loss and net rainfall were expressed separately as a function of gross rainfall. The overall throughfall collected during the period of field observation was 2,432.5mm(78.3%) at Pinus taeda stand and 2,699.6mm at Pinus densiflora stand, out of total rainfall of 3107.6mm. The canopy storage capacity, which was determined by the prediction equation between gross rainfall and throughfall was 1.1mm at Pinus taeda stand and 1.3mm at Pinus densiflora stand. 3. The sums of stemflow from measurement of total rainfall at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand was 227.3mm(7.3%) and 62.7mm(2.0%), respectively. The minimum rainfall causing stemflow was estimated as 7.2mm at Pinus taeda stand and 1.9mm at Pinus densiflora stand. 4. Interception loss accounted for 447.8mm(14.4%) at Pinus taeda stand and 345.3mm(11.1%) at Pinus densiflorra stand. 5. Net rainfall was 2,659.8mm(85.6%) at Pinus taeda stand and 2,762.3mm(88.9%) at Pinus densiflora stand. 6. The rates of throughfall and stemflow increased with increasing the gross rainfall. However, the amounts of throughfall and the stemflow were constant above 30mm at Pinus taeda stand and 50mm at Pinus densiflora stand. The rates of interception loss decreased with increasing the gross rainfall. However, the amount of interception loss was constant above 50mm at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand.

  • Recently actual rainfall pattern is decreasing rainy days and increasing in rainfall intensity and the frequency of flood occurrence is also increased. To consider recent situation, Engineers use deterministic methods like a PMP(Probable Maximum Precipitation). If design storm wouldn't occur, increasing of design criteria is extravagant. In addition, the biggest structure cause trouble with residents and environmental problem. And then it is necessary to study considering probability of rainfall parameter in each sub-basin for design of water structure. In this study, stochastic rainfall patterns are generated by using log-ratio method, Johnson system and multivariate Monte Carlo simulation. Using the stochastic rainfall patterns, hydrological analysis, hydraulic analysis and 2nd flooding analysis were performed based on GIS for their applicability. The results of simulations are similar to the actual damage area so the methodology of this study should be used about making a flood risk map or regidental shunting rout map against the region.

  • In geostationary satellite communications, which are widely used for broadcasting and communication, there is a path loss where the signal power on the path is largely reduced. It is important to consider rain attenuation when calculating link budget because the Ka band frequency is vulnerable to rain attenuation. In this study, rainfall trends were analyzed by using rainfall data from the year 2000 in four regions of Korea (Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Jeju) and the rainfall attenuation was calculated. This was used to analyse the satellite link budget and receiving performance for the down-link of the korea satellite COMS. In this study, the calculated G/T for the rainfall intensity of 0.5% per year using the rainfall data for 18 years increased by approximately $8.5dBK^{-1}$ compared to the ITU's zone-K rain model, and decreased by approximately $1dBK^{-1}$ compared to the precipitation data for 13 years from the TTA(Korea Telecommunications Technology Association). The results of this study can be used for the design of G/T in domestic-installed satellite ground station.
