  • In this paper, we propose an edge cloud platform architecture for implementing smart factory. The edge cloud platform is one of edge computing architecture which is mainly focusing on the efficient computing between IoT devices and central cloud. So far, edge computing has put emphasis on reducing latency, bandwidth and computing cost in areas like smart homes and self-driving cars. On the other hand, in this paper, we suggest not only common functional architecture of edge system but also light weight cloud based architecture to apply to the specialized requirements of smart factory. Cloud based edge architecture has many advantages in terms of scalability and reliability of resources and operation of various independent edge functions compare to typical edge system architecture. To make sure the availability of edge cloud platform in smart factory, we also analyze requirements of smart factory edge. We redefine requirements from a 4M1E(man, machine, material, method, element) perspective which are essentially needed to be digitalized and intelligent for physical operation of smart factory. Based on these requirements, we suggest layered(IoT Gateway, Edge Cloud, Central Cloud) application and data architecture. we also propose edge cloud platform architecture using lightweight container virtualization technology. Finally, we validate its implementation effects with case study. we apply proposed edge cloud architecture to the real manufacturing process and compare to existing equipment engineering system. As a result, we prove that the response performance of the proposed approach was improved by 84 to 92% better than existing method.

  • Emerging mobile edge computing (MEC) can be used in battery-constrained Internet of things (IoT). The execution latency of IoT applications can be improved by offloading computation-intensive tasks to an MEC server. Recently, the popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has increased rapidly, and UAV-based MEC systems are receiving considerable attention. In this paper, we propose a dynamic computation offloading paradigm for UAV-based MEC systems, in which a UAV flies over an urban environment and provides edge services to IoT devices on the ground. Since most IoT devices are energy-constrained, we formulate our problem as a Markov decision process considering the energy level of the battery of each IoT device. We also use model-free Q-learning for time-critical tasks to maximize the system utility. According to our performance study, the proposed scheme can achieve desirable convergence properties and make intelligent offloading decisions.

  • The requirements for powerful computing capability, high capacity, low latency and low energy consumption of emerging services, pose severe challenges to the fifth-generation (5G) network. As a promising paradigm, mobile edge networks can provide services in proximity to users by deploying computing components and cache at the edge, which can effectively decrease service delay. However, the coexistence of heterogeneous services and the sharing of limited resources lead to the competition between various services for multiple resources. This paper considers two typical heterogeneous services: computing services and content delivery services, in order to properly configure resources, it is crucial to develop an effective offloading and caching strategies. Considering the high energy consumption of 5G base stations, this paper considers the hybrid energy supply model of traditional power grid and green energy. Therefore, it is necessary to design a reasonable association mechanism which can allocate more service load to base stations rich in green energy to improve the utilization of green energy. This paper formed the joint optimization problem of computing offloading, caching and resource allocation for heterogeneous services with the objective of minimizing the on-grid power consumption under the constraints of limited resources and QoS guarantee. Since the joint optimization problem is a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem that is impossible to solve, this paper uses deep reinforcement learning method to learn the optimal strategy through a lot of training. Extensive simulation experiments show that compared with other schemes, the proposed scheme can allocate resources to heterogeneous service according to the green energy distribution which can effectively reduce the traditional energy consumption.

  • Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been intended to seamlessly collaborate for enabling intelligent networking in terms of massive service differentiation, prediction, and provides high-accuracy recommendation systems. Mobile edge computing (MEC) servers are located close to the edge networks to overcome the responsibility for massive requests from user devices and perform local service offloading. Moreover, there are required lightweight methods for handling real-time Internet of Things (IoT) communication perspectives, especially for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and optimal resource utilization. To overcome the abovementioned issues, this paper proposed an intelligent scheme for traffic steering based on the integration of MEC and lightweight ML, namely support vector machine (SVM) for effectively routing for lightweight and resource constraint networks. The scheme provides dynamic resource handling for the real-time IoT user systems based on the awareness of obvious network statues. The system evaluations were conducted by utillizing computer software simulations, and the proposed approach is remarkably outperformed the conventional schemes in terms of significant QoS metrics, including communication latency, reliability, and communication throughput.

  • Local intelligent services aim at controlling local services such as cooling or lightening services in a certain local area, using Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensor data in the area. As the IoT paradigm has evolved, local intelligent services have gained increasing attention. However, most of the local intelligent service mechanism proposed so far do not directly take the users' presence and service preference information into account for controlling local services. This study proposes an individual presence-and-preference-based local service system (IPP-LISS). We present a intelligent service control algorithm and implement a prototype system of IPP-LISS. Typically, the intelligence part of IPP-LISS including the prediction models, is generated on remote server in the cloud because of their compute-intense aspect. However, this can cause huge data traffic between IoT devices and servers in the cloud. The emerging mobile edge computing technology will be a promising solution of this challenge of IPP-LISS. In this paper, we implement IPP-LISS in the cloud, and then, based on the implementation result, we discuss applying the mobile edge computing technology to the IPP-LISS application.

  • In this paper, we design a lightweight embedded device that can support intelligent edge computing, and show that the device quickly detects an object in an image input from a camera device in real time. The proposed system can be applied to environments without pre-installed infrastructure, such as an intelligent video control system for industrial sites or military areas, or video security systems mounted on autonomous vehicles such as drones. The On-Device AI(Artificial intelligence) technology is increasingly required for the widespread application of intelligent vision recognition systems. Computing offloading from an image data acquisition device to a nearby edge device enables fast service with less network and system resources than AI services performed in the cloud. In addition, it is expected to be safely applied to various industries as it can reduce the attack surface vulnerable to various hacking attacks and minimize the disclosure of sensitive data.

  • In recent years, an IoT is dramatically developing according to the enhancement of AI, the increase of connected devices, and the high-performance cloud systems. Huge data produced by many devices and sensors is expanding the scope of services, such as an intelligent diagnostics, a recommendation service, as well as a smart monitoring service. The studies of edge computing are limited as a role of small server system with high quality HW resources. However, there are specialized requirements in a smart factory domain needed edge computing. The edges are needed to pre-process containing tiny filtering, pre-formatting, as well as merging of group contexts and manage the regional rules. So, in this paper, we extract the features and requirements in a scope of efficiency and robustness. Our edge offers to decrease a network resource consumption and update rules and learning models. Moreover, we propose architecture of edge computing based on learning factors sharing with a cloud system in a smart factory.

  • In vehicular edge computing (VEC) networks, the rapid expansion of intelligent transportation and the corresponding enormous numbers of tasks bring stringent requirements on timely task offloading. However, many tasks typically appear within a short period rather than arriving simultaneously, which makes it difficult to realize effective and efficient resource scheduling. In addition, some key information about tasks could be learned due to the regular data collection and uploading processes of sensors, which may contribute to developing effective offloading strategies. Thus, in this paper, we propose a model that considers the deterministic demand of multiple tasks. It is possible to generate effective resource reservations or early preparation decisions in offloading strategies if some feature information of the deterministic demand can be obtained in advance. We formulate our scenario as a 0-1 programming problem to minimize the average delay of tasks and transform it into a convex form. Finally, we proposed an efficient optimal offloading algorithm that uses the interior point method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has great advantages in optimizing offloading utility.

  • IoT(Internet of Things) can enable networking and computing using any devices is rapidly proliferated. In the existing IoT environment, bottlenecks and service delays can occur because it processes data and provides services to users using central processing based on Cloud. For this reason, Edge Computing processes data directly in IoT nodes and networks to provide the services to the users has attracted attention. Also, numerous researchers have been attracted to intelligent service efficiently based on Edge Computing. In this paper, expert system-based context awareness scheme for Edge Computing in IoT environment is proposed. The proposed scheme can provide customized services to the users using context awareness and process data in real-time using the expert system based on efficient cooperations of resource limited IoT nodes. The context awareness services can be modified by the users according to the usage purpose. The three service modes in the security system based on smart home are used to test the proposed scheme and the stability of the proposed scheme is proven by a comparison of the resource consumptions of the servers between the proposed scheme and the PC-based expert system.
