  • Nowadays, railroads are considered the most efficient form of mass transportation. Furthermore, it is necessary that railroads be paired with state-of-the-art safety equipment. Unfortunately, it is impossible to prevent 100% of accidents that may be caused by system or human errors. In order to prevent future accidents, RAMS activity and Functional Safety Certification are required for new systems that are under development. In this paper we evaluate the necessity of the application of RAMS and the performance of RAMS in the system development process. We also explore the Safety Evaluation Procedure required for RAMS certification.

  • The structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) is evaluated in this study. For given material properties and transient histories such as temperature and pressure, the stress distribution is found and stress intensity factors are obtained for a wide range of crack sizes. The stress intensity factors are compared with the fracture toughness to check if cracking is expected to occur during the transient. A round robin problem of the PTS during a small break loss of coolant transient has been analyzed as a part of the international comparative assessment study, and the evaluation results are discussed. The maximum allowable nil-ductility transition temperatures are determined for various crack sizes.

  • Estimation of the CANDU pressure tube deflection is important since the deflection may cause significant structural failure due to hydrogen diffusion and blister. However, there is no appropriate engineering model to estimate it exactly. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new analysis method and program to resolve this issue. For development of proper analysis method, a series of finite element analyses has been carried under elastic-creep condition. In addition, for effective estimation of the creep deflection, an analysis program named PC-DAS was developed based on the proposed method. Comparison of simple case study results with corresponding reference ones showed good agreement. Therefore, the proposed method and program can be utilized as one of valuable toolkit for integrity assessment of CANDU pressure tube.

  • This paper presents an efficient models for reinforeced concrete structures using CART-ANFIS(classification and regression tree-adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system). a fuzzy decision tree parttitions the input space of a data set into mutually exclusive regions, each of which is assigned a label, a value, or an action to characterize its data points. Fuzzy decision trees used for classification problems are often called fuzzy classification trees, and each terminal node contains a label that indicates the predicted class of a given feature vector. In the same vein, decision trees used for regression problems are often called fuzzy regression trees, and the terminal node labels may be constants or equations that specify the Predicted output value of a given input vector. Note that CART can select relevant inputs and do tree partitioning of the input space, while ANFIS refines the regression and makes it everywhere continuous and smooth. Thus it can be seen that CART and ANFIS are complementary and their combination constitutes a solid approach to fuzzy modeling.

  • Benthic macroinvertebrates are widely used as biological indicators for assessing the integrity of aquatic ecosystem. However, sampling has usually been done with fixed sample size due to time consuming and costly process. This study was conducted to find out the influence of sample size on the biological indices (H' DI, R1, J, EPT, ESB and BMI) of benthic macroinvertebrates. The 15 replicate samples were quantitatively collected from each 3 different site of two mountain streams in May, 2011. With the replicate data, we combined the abundance of each species with all the possible combinations of the sample size. Along with the increase of sample size, the number of species increased continuously and did not converge. BMI showed little difference whereas other biological indices increased or decreased.

  • The concept of improved performance indicators (PIs) for use in the KINS Safety Performance Indicator (SPI) program for reactor safety area is proposed in this paper. To achieve this, the recently developed PIs from the USNRC that use risk information were investigated, and a feasibility study for the application of these PIs in Korean NPPs was performed. The investigated PIs are Baseline Risk Index for Initiating Events (BRIIE), Unplanned Scrams with Complications (USwC), and Mitigating System Performance Index (MSPI). Moreover, the thresholds of the existing safety performance indicators of KINS were evaluated in consideration of the risk and regulatory response to different levels of licensee performance in the graded inspection program.

  • Given the importance of quickly recovering livelihoods and economic activity after an earthquake, the seismic performance of the pile foundation is becoming more critical than before. In order to promote seismic retrofit of the pile foundations, it is necessary to develop a method for evaluating the seismic performance of the pile foundation based on the experimental data. In this paper, we focus on the building that was suffered severe damage to the pile foundation, conduct simulation analyses of the building, and report the results of evaluating the dynamic characteristics when piles are damaged using a system identification method. As a result, an analysis model that can accurately simulate the behavior of the damaged building during an earthquake was constructed, and it was shown that the system identification method could extract dynamic characteristics that may damage piles.

  • A piping system stress analysis need to be re-performed for structural integrity assessment after reinforcement of a pipe with significant wall thinning. For efficient stress analysis, a one-dimensional beam element for the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement needs to be developed. To develop the beam element, this work presents analytical equations for elastic stiffness of the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement are analytically derived for axial tension, bending and torsion. Comparison with finite element (FE) analysis results using detailed three-dimensional solid models for wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement shows good agreement. Implementation of the proposed solutions into commercial FE programs is explained.

  • The thickness of pipe can be locally reduced during operation due to wall thinning. Due to its significance on structural integrity, many non-destructive detecting techniques and assessment methods are available. In this study, the elastic bending compliance of local wall-thinned pipe is presented in terms of the wall thinning geometry: wall thinning depth, circumferential angle and longitudinal length. Elastic finite element (FE) analysis further shows that the presented equation can be used for any wall thinning shape. The proposed solution differs from FE results by less than 6% for all cases analyzed. The bending compliance increases linearly with increasing longitudinal thinning length and non-linearly with increasing thinning angle and depth.

  • This paper presents approximate in-depth residual stress and plastic strain profiles for laser-peened alloy 600 surface via FE analysis. In approximations, effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots are quantified. Based on FE analysis results, residual stress profiles are quantified by two variables; the maximum difference in stress before and after LSP, and the depth up to which the compressive residual stress exists. Plastic strain profiles are quantified by one variable, the maximum equivalent plastic strain at the surface. The proposed profiles are validated by comparing with published LSP experimental results for welded plates. Effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots on these variables are discussed. The proposed profile can be directly applied to predict the mitigation effect of LSP on PWSCC and to efficiently perform structural integrity assessment of laser peened nuclear components.
