  • The system that covers gathering, integrating, exchanging, presenting and analyzing of information within ships and shores for the safety and security in Marine Environment is known as e-Navigation Policy. Northern Europe has been conducting research and development. It came up into a concept that deals with ship's route information between vessels as well as vessels to shores which is better known as route exchange system. The research showed substantial advantages on navigational safety by exchanging the route information between vessels in vicinity and vessels to shores. Therefore, upon the adaptation of route exchange System as a major function in integrated navigational system, the existing procedures in VTS could be changed for betterment. In this study, it was verified the effectiveness of route exchange system by the adaptation of a recent collision accident occurred in Korean coast and suggested that route exchange system which would be carried out by the discretion of VTS center in VTS area. Finally, it proposed the new functions for outstanding services and procedures of integrating traffic organization services on coastal VTS for an effective route exchange system in Korean coastal area.

  • As maritime traffic increases and ships get bigger and faster, the risk of maritime accident increases. According to the recent reports on maritime accidents, more than 80% of the maritime accidents occur due to navigational mistakes and/or human errors. Even though many kinds of navigation systems based on new technology have been developed to reduce maritime accidents, we need to research the method for expressing and providing information. The efficient navigation system should be able to display information simply and intuitively to make decision quickly and accurately. In this paper, we proposed augmented reality based navigation system which can be utilized in bridge of the ships and described the services for navigational safety.

  • Human errors have known as a majority of maritime navigational accidents such as collision and grounding. A large number of relevant research applied indirect research methods such as survey and interview. The research methods are limited to collect objective data regarding human errors due to its nature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to improve the limitation of human error measurement of navigators by applying wearable sensors. Infrared sensors by using a 3-D printer to accommodate the special environment of a ship were developed for the study. As results, a significant reliance on the Integrated Navigation System including Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) and Radar. The results are expected to motivate further research to investigate human errors of ship navigators to reduce the maritime navigational accidents.

  • Integrated approach is presented by developing the technology and the ways of the practical use of the integrated digital map of and Electronical Navigational Chart (ENC) and Digital Terrain Map (DTM) for the effective and scientific based conservation, development and management of coastal area in this study. At first as preliminary studies to make eventual integrated maps, the necessity of the integrated map is described with the concept of coastal areas. Then, the characteristics of digital maps developed by Korean Geography Institute and National Marine Investigation Institute are carefully analyzed and integrated to a digital map as a test for edge matching in coastal line. Developed test coastal map was overlayed with a high-resolution satellite image (KVR-1000). The ground survey using Global Positioning System was conducted for the analysis of edge matching along the coastal line. Results from the edge matching analysis of coastal lines showed about 14 meters mean difference in artificial terrain and 4 meters mean difference in natural terrain. The problems, causes and solutions for the edge-matched differences are described. Furthermore, the value of utilization, the future use and various fields of application produced by the integrated digital map database are suggested as a basis for ICZM implementation in South Korea.

  • According to the development if the ships navigational equipment, a bridge system has been improved but a marine accidents by human error haven't been reduced Recently our interest is concentrated on a suitable ergonomic arrangement and design of the ships bridge equipment to reduce an error due to human factors. The bridge alarm system should be designed to recognize the alarm informations as soon as possible and to deliver it clearly. Internationally, the matter is being discussed on the BAMS(Bridge Alarm Management System) in a view if a ergonomic bridge design, but a practical design method is not getting result.. In this paper I would like to review an application approach of human engineering ergonomics to a bridge alarm system and propose a conceptual design if the Ergonomic Integrated Bridge Alarm Management System(EIBAMS)

  • A study on theergonomic design of the automated ship's bridge and console layout was carried out through this paper. The goal of this study is to find out the effective and ergonomic optimal design solutions of bridge layout hence to reduce the duty officier's workload and increase the safety of navigation. The conventional bridge layouts and modernized Integrated bridge layouts were compared using several factors. To use human factors, an ergonomic control panel layout system based on constraint satisfaction algorithm wa squoted. And the integrated ergonomic bridge layout was converged and applied to the redesign of the navigational console layout.

  • An unmanned ground vehicle can perform its mission automatically without human control in unknown environment. To move up to a destination in various surrounding situation, navigational information is indispensible. In order to be adopted for an unmanned vehicle, the navigation box is small, light weight and low power consumption. This paper suggests navigation system using a low grade MEMS IMU for supplying position, velocity, and attitude of an unmanned ground vehicle. This system consists of low cost and light weight MEMS sensors and a GPS receiver to meet unmanned vehicle requirements. The sensors are basically integrated by loosely coupled method using Kalman filter and internal algorithms are divided into initial alignment, sensor error compensation, and complex navigation algorithm. The performance of the designed navigation system has been analyzed by real time field test and compared to commercial tactical grade GPS/INS system.

  • The process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in Busan northern harbor was analyzed and evaluated by using an integrated VTS(vessel traffic service) system installed in the ship training center of Pukyong National University, Busan, Korea. The integrated VTS system used in this study was consisted of ARPA radar, ECDIS(electronic chart display and information system), backup(recording) system, CCTV(closed-circuit television) camera system, gyro-compass, differential GPS receiver, anemometer, AIS(automatic identification system), VHF(very high frequency) communication system, etc. The network of these systems was designed to communicate with each other automatically and to exchange the critical information about the course, speed, position and intended routes of other traffic vessels in the navigational channel and Busan northern harbor. To evaluate quantitatively the overall dynamic situation such as maneuvering motions for target vessel and its tugboats while in transit to and from the berth structure inside a harbor, all traffic information in Busan northern harbor was automatically acquired, displayed, evaluated and recorded. The results obtained in this study suggest that the real-time tracking information of traffic vessels acquired by using an integrated VTS system can be used as a useful reference data in evaluating and analyzing exactly the dynamic situation such as the collision between ship and berth structure, in the process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in the confined waters and harbor.

  • This paper presents an integrated underwater navigational algorithm for unmanned underwater vehicles, using additional two-range transducers. This paper proposes a measurement model, using two range measurements, to improve the performance of an IMU-DVL (inertial measurement unit - Doppler velocity log) navigation system for long-time operation of underwater vehicles, excluding DVL measurement. Extended Kalman filter was adopted to propagate the error covariance, to update the measurement errors, and to correct the state equation when the external measurements are available. Simulation was conducted with the 6-d.o.f nonlinear numerical model of an AUV in lawn-mowing survey mode, at current flaw, where the velocity information is unavailable. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the integrated navigation system, assisted by the additional range measurements without DVL sensing.
