The average bit error rate (HER) performance of a Gray coded arbitrary rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (AR-QAM) signal with maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity in an arbitrarily correlated Nakagami-m fading channel is derived and analyzed. The derived two types of general solutions are a simple closed-form and an integral form, depending on the types of the values (integer and non-integer) of the fading parameter. Using the derived equations in this paper, we analyzed the HER performances numerically based on the practical base station antenna configuration. The results show that MRC reception is a very effective scheme so far even though the combined signals are not independent each other because of the correlation values. The antenna height and separation of the MRC system relate to the correlation coefficient value between antennas, and go a long way with the diversity advantage. In particular, it is needed to be determined the antenna height that is carefully do for the diversity advantage because the correlation coefficient and the antenna height gain are contrary to each other from the aspect of the system performance. The expressions presented here can offer a convenient way to evaluate the exact HER performance of an arbitrary rectangular QAM signal with MRC diversity reception for various cases of practical interest on a correlated Nakagami fading channel.

Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor-liquid system. In the present work, the absorption process of water vapor by an aqueous soluton of LiBr flowing inside of the vertical tube was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the heat and mass transfer rate. Particularly the effects of vapor flow conditions on the absorption process were investigated in terms of the vapor Reynolds number. As the vapor Reynolds number increased, the shear stress at the vapor-solution interface also increased. Consequently solution film became thinner at higher vapor flowrate under the co-currentflow condition. Thinner film was capable of higher heat transfer to the wall and leaded to higher absorption rate of the water vapor into the solution film.
Abstract. We propose a fast and robust finite difference method for Merton's jump diffusion model, which is a partial integro-differential equation. To speed up a computational time, we compute a matrix so that we can calculate the non-local integral term fast by a simple matrix-vector operation. Also, we use non-uniform grids to increase efficiency. We present numerical experiments such as evaluation of the option prices and Greeks to demonstrate a performance of the proposed numerical method. The computational results are in good agreements with the exact solutions of the jump-diffusion model.

The structural and leakage integrity of steam generator tubes should be sustained against all postulated loads even if a crack is present. During the past three decades, most of the efforts with respect to integrity evaluation of steam generator tubes have been focused on limit load solutions but, recently, the applicability of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics was examined cautiously due to its effectiveness. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a testing method to estimate fracture resistance characteristics of steam generator tubes with a through-wall crack. Due to limited thickness and diameter, inevitably, the steam generator tubes themselves were tested instead of standard specimen or alternative ones. Also, a series of three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses were carried out to derive closed-form estimation equations with respect to J-integral and crack extension for direct current potential drop method. Since the effectiveness of $J_{IC}$ as well as J-R curves was proven through comparison with those of standard specimens taken from pipes, it is believed that the proposed scheme can be utilized as an efficient tool for integrity evaluation of cracked steam generator tubes.

The very large container ships have been built recently and those ships have very small structural rigidity compared with the other conventional ships. As a result, the destruction of ship hull is occurred by the springing including to warping phenomena due to encounter waves. In this study, the solutions of hydrodynamic coefficients are obtained by solving the three dimensional source distribution method and the forward speed Green function representing a translating and pulsating source potential for infinite water depth is used to calculating the integral equation. The vessel is longitudinally divided into various sections and the added mass, wave damping and wave exciting forces of each section is calculated by integrating the dynamic pressures over the mean wetted section surface. The equations for six degree freedom of motions is obtained for each section in the frequency domain and stiffness matrix is calculated by Euler beam theory. The computations are carried out for very large ship and effects of bending and torsional ridigity on the wave frequency and angle are investigated.
The present study addresses a computational result of unsteady gas flow through a critical nozzle. The axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method that makes use of the second order upwind scheme for spatial derivatives and the multi-stage Runge-Kutta integral scheme for time derivatives. The steady solutions of the governing equation system are validated with the previous experimental data to ensure that the present computational method is valid to predict the critical nozzle flows. In order to simulate the effects of back pressure fluctuations on the critical nozzle flows, an excited pressure oscillation with an amplitude and frequency is assumed downstream of the exit of the critical nozzle. The results obtained show that for low Reynolds numbers, the unsteady effects of the pressure fluctuations can propagate upstream of the throat of critical nozzle, and thus giving rise to the applicable fluctuations in mass flow rate through the critical nozzle, while for high Reynolds numbers, the pressure signals occurring at the exit of the critical nozzle do not propagate upstream beyond the nozzle throat. For very low Reynolds number, it is found that the sonic line near the throat of the critical nozzle remarkably fluctuateswith time, providing an important mechanism for pressure signals to propagate upstream of the nozzle throat, even in choked flow conditions. The present study is the first investigation to clarify the unsteady effects on the critical nozzle flows.

This paper provides an reference stress based J estimation equation fur cylinders with finite internal axial surface cracks under internal pressure. In part 1, the J estimation equation based on deformation plasticity using Ramberg-Osgood (R-0) materials is proposed. In this paper, the developed CE/EPRI -type solutions ale then re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. Such a re-formulation provides a simpler equation for J. estimation are then further extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed reference stress based J estimation equation is compared with elastic-plastic 3-D FE results using actual stress-strain data for a Type 304 stainless steel. Good agreement between the FE results and the proposed reference stress based J estimations provides confidence in the use of the proposed method to elastic -plastic fracture mechanics of pressurised piping.

An efficient boundary-based technique is developed for addressing shape design sensitivity analysis in supercavitating flow problem. An analytical sensitivity formula in the form of a boundary integral is derived based on the continuum formulation for a general functional defined in potential flow problems. The formula, which is expressed in terms of the boundary solutions and shape variation vectors, can be conveniently used for gradient computation in a variety of shape design in potential flow problems. While the sensitivity can be calculated independent of the analysis means, such as the finite element method (FEM) or the boundary element method (BEM), the FEM is used for the analysis in this study because of its popularity and easy-to-use features. The advantage of using a boundary-based method is that the shape variation vectors are needed only on the boundary, not over the whole domain. The boundary shape variation vectors are conveniently computed by using finite perturbations of the shape geometry instead of complex analytical differentiation of the geometry functions. The supercavitating flow problem is chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology. Implementation issues for the sensitivity analysis and optimization procedure are also addressed in this flow problem.

Uncoupled, quasi-static and linear thermoviscoelastic problems are analyzed in time domain by the finite element approximation which is developed using the principle of virtual work and viscoelasticity matrices instead of shear and bulk relaxation functions as in usual formulations. The material is assumed to be isotropic, homegeneous and thermorheologically simple, which means that the temperature-time equivalence postulate is effective. The stress-strain laws are expressed by relaxation-type hereditary integrals. In spatial and time discritizations, isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral finite elements and linear time variations are adopted. For explicit derivations, the viscoelastic material is assumed to behave standard linear solid in shear and elastically in dilatation. Two-dimensional examples are solved under general temperature distributions T = T(x, t), and compared with other opproximate solutions to show the versatility of the presented analysis.

A novel higher shear deformation theory (HSDT) is proposed for the bending, buckling and free vibration investigations of isotropic and functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates. It contains only four variables, which is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the conventional HSDTs. The model accounts for a parabolic variation of transverse shear stress, respects the traction free boundary conditions and contrary to the conventional HSDTs, the present one presents a novel displacement field which incorporates undetermined integral terms. Equations of motion determined in this work are applied for three types of FG structures: FG plates, sandwich plates with FG core and sandwich plates with FG faces. Analytical solutions are given to predict the transverse displacements, stresses, critical buckling forces and natural frequencies of simply supported plates and a comparison study is carried out to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed model.
