This study analyzes the effects of caring for grandchildren on Korean grandparents' health, using the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from 2006 to 2012. We investigate how caregiving is provided and analyze the effects of caregiving on grandparents' physical health, mental health, and health-related behaviors. As elderly people's health is generally frail, it is unclear whether the provision of childcare affects their health negatively. We control for the endogeneity of caregiving by an individual fixed effect (FE) model and instrumental variable-fixed effect (FE-IV) models. Using these models, we determine the endogeneity of caregiving and show that the significant effects of caregiving on health disappear as we control for endogeneity in the FE and FE-IV models. Even after controlling for endogeneity, we find that caregiving increases the probability of feeling pain as well as the number of different types of pain. Furthermore, caregiving increases the probability of restrictions on daily activities because of pain. On the other hand, caregiving reduces the symptoms of depression. In relation to health-related behaviors, caregiving reduces the probability of physical exercise and regular meals. Our results imply that although caregiving has a positive effect on mental health, the increase in physical pain and in non-healthy behaviors may lead to a deterioration of the caregiver's long-term health, which in turn may increase the medical costs of the elderly. Potential policy alternatives are discussed in the paper.
This study estimates the fiscal multiplier using Input-Output table panel data from year of 2010 to 2018. Considering the endogeneity of the government expenditure, this study uses the share of government expenditure by sector in the initial period as an instrument variable. The estimation from the panel fixed effect instrumental variables model shows that the estimate for the current period of government expenditure is 1.15~1.22 and the estimate for the cumulative multiplier is 1.23~1.32 depending on the method of controlling time trend. Since the general equilibrium effect absorbed by the time-fixed effect in the estimation equation, the estimated multiplier in this study may be different from the multiplier of the economy as a whole. The general equilibrium effect depends on the response of monetary policy, changes in tax policy, and interaction between sectors.

This study investigated country-of-origin effects by comparatively analyzing consumer attitude toward country-of-origin of imported apparel according to apparel product attributes. Fishbein attitude model was used. The effects of consumer characteristics such as attitude of consumers toward general imported apparel and demorgraphic variables on consumer attitude toward country-of-origin were also identified. Italy, U.S.A, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea were used as country of origin. Data were obtained from male and female subjects(total 570) aged mostly 20's. Statistical analysis showed: 1) Apparel product attributes were classified into 3 factors, expressive, instrumental and brand, which are the order of importance for purchasing. 2) Consumer indicated more favorable attitude toward 'made in 'Italy' nd made in 'Korea' in each attribute factor. 'Made in Korea' roducts were evaluated highest in expressive attribute factor but less favored than 'made in Italy' n brand attribute factor. 'Made in U.S.A and made in Japan' were evaluated favorable in instrumental factor, whereas 'made in Hong Kong' had the least favorable attitude in every attribute factor. 3) The uniqueness and good quality of imported apparel appeared to be the most strong variable in predicting consumer attitude toward each country-of-origin. 4) The attitude toward country of origin was different according to sex and age.
This study tries to understand how the physical impairment develops to practical disabilities among adults with cerebral palsy through path analysis, based on the concept of disability by WHO that the physical impairment and "activities of daily living"(ADL) are affected by the combination of interrelated concept of personal health and environment. Pain and instrumental support are conceptualized as mediating variables for ADL among the adults with cerebral palsy, which are used in the analysis. As a result of surveying of 381 participants, paralyzed region is the only variable directly influencing ADL; other variables such as gender, age, and types of cerebral palsy do not have direct effect on ADL. However, it turns out that age, types of cerebral palsy, and paralyzed region influence on pain problems and also on ADL indirectly, when pain is introduced as a mediating variable. The study also shows that the extent of instrumental support works directly and indirectly toward pain and ADL. It means that individual impairment does not necessarily have influence on the limitations of ADL, but on the result of interrelatedness of individual factors and social factors. Finally, this study implies that the social work practice should be intervened with a new approach of the consideration of the effects of mediating variables.
Expending on a life course perspective, this study explores the long-term and short-term reciprocity in parent-child relationships in Korean context. Since the reasons for providing filial support are believed to differ by gender, we focused on how a child's gender affects both types of reciprocity. Data were collected from middle-aged sons (N=726) and daughters (N=883) with at least one surviving parent. Logistic regression was then conducted in order to examine the relations between the support a child currently provides to parents and the current or previous support received from the parents. Dependent variables are financial and instrumental support that middle-aged child currently provide to the parents. The financial and instrumental support a child received from the parents within a year are included in the model as an independent variable to assess short-term reciprocity. The level of financial support a child has received during the transition to adulthood process is included in the model as a independent variable to explore long-term reciprocity. Result supports the existence of gender differences in the long-term reciprocity. Daughters provided instrumental support in response to the financial support that they had received from parents during the transition to adulthood process. However, for sons, this tendency was not found. When it comes to financial support, long-term reciprocity was observed neither for the sons nor for the daughters. Both sons and daughters are prone to provide financial support to the aged parents regardless of the level of financial support they had received during the transition to adulthood process. Short-term reciprocity was found both in sons and daughters. when they have been receiving a financial or an instrumental support from the aged parents within a year, they tend to provided instrumental support to the parents. This study shows that the aged parents still fulfill the reciprocal relationship to a certain degree. Secondly, we can conclude that the norm of reciprocity interplays with the norm of filial responsibility in contemporary Korea.
Objectives: Family members are often cancer patients' primary source of social and emotional support and make a major contribution to how well patients manage their illness. We compared the prevalence of depression in the family members of cancer patients and the general population. Methods: This study used the data from the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The variable of interest was the presence of a cohabitating cancer patient in the family and the dependent variable was the presence of diagnosed depression. Results: The odds of having medically diagnosed depression in those with a cohabitating cancer patient in the family were significantly higher than among those who did not have cancer patients in their families (odds ratio [OR], 1.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12 to 2.17; p=0.009). The OR for females was 1.59, and this increase was statistically significant (95% CI, 1.09 to 2.31; p=0.02). Conclusions: We need to invest more effort into diagnosing and managing depression in the family members of cancer patients. This will have an impact both on their quality of life and on the well-being of patients, as supporters and caregivers play an instrumental role in helping patients manage their illness.

In this study, a semi-active isolator was constructed from applying a MR damper that used the MR fluid to an isolator. The parameter identification was also performed to determine the characteristics of this semi-active isolator during which the least squares method and the auxiliary variable method were applied to produce a value closest to the true value. In addition, the MR damper's nonlinear damping force was closely analyzed to greatly reduce the range of error. Based on this analysis, it was discovered that the parameter tended to increase with more electric current. Such analysis of the dynamic properties of semi-active isolator proved that constructing an isolator that provides a more stable operation could be achieved.
This study examines the demand system of shrimp imported from top four countries and domestically produced by using AIDS (Almost Ideal Demand System) model. Top four import countries are Vietnam, Ecuador, China, and Malaysia based on the value of imports in 2021. As results of the analysis, the demand system of shrimp turn out to be below. First, the relationship of domestic shrimp and imported shrimp (Ecuadorian and Vietnamese) is identified as complements or substitutes depending on whether the income effect is considered. This result implies that imported shrimp supplements domestic supply against excess demand while homogeneous shrimp products competes with domestic shrimp in fish market. Second, the relationship among imported shrimps turned out to be both substitutes and complements. Especially, the Vietnamese shrimp is complementary with Chinese and Malaysian shrimp, but substitutes of Ecuadorian. It is assumed that adjoining Asian countries shares similar shrimp species and processing system which differentiates from Ecuadorian. Finally, the study included quarter as dummy variable and GDP as instrumental variable of expenditure in the model. The result confirmed that domestic shrimp is highly on demand during the main production season while imported shrimp is mainly demanded during the rest of the season.
This report proposes a novel method of identification of continuous time-delay systems from sampled input-output data. By the aid of a digital pre-filter, an approximated discrete-time estimation model is first derived, in which the system parameters remain in their original form and the time delay need not be an integral multiple of th sampling period. Then an identification method combining the common linear least squares(LS) method or the instrumental variable(IV) method with the genetic algorithm(GA) is proposed. That is, the time-delay is selected by the GA, and the system parameters are estimated by the LS or IV method. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended to the case of multi-input multi-output systems where the time-delays in the individual input channels may differ each other. Simulation resutls show that our method yields consistent estimates even in the presence of high measurement noises.
The purpose of this study were to find the general trends of middle-aged couples' caregiving burden, to investigate correlation between husbands and wives, to estimate the differences according to related variables and analyze the effects of significant variables influencing on caregiving burden. The data were obtained from 172 middle-aged couples living in Seoul and Kwangju. The major findings were as follows; 1. Scores of couples' caregiving burden were lower than medium. Especially, husbands' score were higher than wives' in a sense of guilt and haubands' caregiving burden correlated significantly with the wives'. 2. Couples' caregiving burden showed significant differences according to birth order of husband and family life satisfaction was the most differencial in family relationship variables. Social support and family value orientations were also significant variables. 3. The most influencial variable on husbands' caregiving burden was emotional support, and instrumental support on wives'. And life and communication satisfaction were very important variables. So family relationship must be enhanced and social support system's reinforcements are necessary.
