In this study, we analyzed the intensity attenuation for M 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 earthquakes using the broadband strong ground motion simulation platform based on the physical seismic modeling developed by the US Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). The location of the earthquake was assumed to be near the epicenter of the 2016 M 5.8 Gyeongju earthquake, but two of the representative US regional models provided by the SCEC strong ground motion simulation platform were used for the propagation model. One is the Central and Eastern United States (CEUS) model representing the intraplate region, and the other is the LA Basin model representing the interplate region. Five modeling methodologies are presented in the version 16.5 of the simulation platform, and Song and Exsim models were used in this study. In the analysis, we found that different intensity attenuation patterns can be observed with the same magnitude of earthquakes, especially depending on the region (CEUS vs LA Basin). Given the same magnitude and distance, the instrumental intensity in the CEUS region (intraplate) could be larger by a unit of 2 than that in the LA Basin region (interplate). Given the difference of intensity attenuation patterns observed in the study, it is important to know the regional intensity attenuation characteristics to understand the accurate level of seismic hazard imposed in the Korean Peninsula. This study also shows the level of the uncertainty of intensity attenuation if region specific attenuation characteristics are not considered.

In general, the accelerogram of earthquake ground motion or the accelerogram obtained from dynamic tests contain various errors. In these errors of the accelerograms, there are instrumental errors(magnitude and phase distortion) due to the response characteristics of accelerometer and the digitizing error concentrated in low and high frequency components and random errors. Then, these errors may be detrimental to the results of data processing and dynamic analysis. An efficient method which can correct the errors of the accelerogram is proposed in this study. The correction of errors can be accomplished through four steps as followes ; 1) using an interpolation method a data form appropriate to the error correction is prepared, 2) low and high frequency errors of the accelerogram are removed by band-pass filter between prescribed frequency limits, 3) instrumental errors are corrected using dynamic equilibrium equation of the accelerometer, 4) velocity and displacement are obtained by integrating corrected accelerogram. Presently, infinite impulse response(IIR) filter and finite impulse response (FIR) filter are generally used as band-pass filter. In the proposed error correction procedure, the deficiencies of FIR filter and IIR filter are reduced and, using the properties of the differentiation and the integration of Fourier transform, the accuracy of instrument correction and integration is improved.

In this study, a tsunami hazard curve was determined for a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) of a tsunami event at a Nuclear Power Plant site. A Tsunami catalogue was developed by using the historical tsunami record prior to 1900 and the instrumental tsunami record after 1900. For the evaluation of the return period of the tsunami run-up height, power-law, upper-truncated power law and exponential function were considered for the assessment of regression curves and each result was compared. Although there were in total only 9 tsunami records on the east coast of Korea during the time period of the tsunami catalogue, there is no research like this about tsunami hazard curve evaluation, so this research lays a foundation for probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment (PTHA)

The generation of artificial accelerograms considering the characteristic of earthquakes in the Korean peninsula for a time history analysis of structures is accomplised by the stochastic method. The engineering data such as a representative shape of envelope function and an effective duration are investigated from the instrumental records. The maximum ground acceleration value is based on seismic zoning map which are constructed for the Korean peninsula. The acceleration-time histories are generated for two different types of earthquake motions and two types of soil conditions. In the study, the maximum ground acceleration value of 0.2 g and effective durations of 24 seconds are used. The validity of the artificial accelerograms is obtained by the comparison with the required envelope functions and the design response spectrum.

The Mw=7.7 (Pazarcık-Kahramanmaraş) and Mw=7.6 (Elbistan-Kahramanmaraş) earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye on 06.02.2023 with 9 hours' intervals, caused great losses of life and property as the biggest catastrophe in the instrumental period. The earthquakes affecting an area of 14% of the country were enormous and caused a great deal of loss of life and damage. Numerous buildings have collapsed or damaged at different levels, both in the city centers and in rural areas. Within the scope of this study, masonry structure damage built from different types of materials in the earthquake region was taken into consideration. In this study, the damage and causes of such masonry structures that do not generally receive engineering services were examined and explained in detail. Insufficient interlocking between wall-wall and wall-roof, inadequate masonry, lack of horizontal and vertical bond beams, usage of low-strength materials, poor workmanship, and heavy earthen roof are commonly caused to structural damages. Separation at the corner point and out-of-plane mechanism in structural walls, and heavy earthen roof damages are common types of damage in masonry structures.
The site effects relating to the amplification of ground motion under earthquake loading are strongly influenced by both the subsurface soil condition and geologic structure. In this study, the site effects at the Hongseong area in Korea were examined by both the site investigation including borehole drilling and in-situ seismic tests and the site visit for acquiring geologic information of ground surface. Subsurface of Hongseong area with a major instrumental earthquake event in 1978 is composed of weathered layers of a maximum of 45 m thickness overlying bedrock. A geotechnical information system based on GIS framework was implemented to effectively find out spatial geologic structure of study area and it indicated Hongseong is a shallow and wide shaped basin. Two-dimensional finite element (FE) analyses for a representative cross-section of the Hongseong area were performed to evaluate seismic site responses. From the results of seismic responses, it was observed that the ground motions were amplified during the propagation of shear waves through the soil layer overlying the bedrock and the duration of shaking near the basin edges was prolonged due to the surface waves generated by interactions of shear waves with basin geometry. Furthermore, one-dimensional FE seismic response analyses were additionally conducted for soil sites selected in the basin, and it gives similar results to the two-dimensional seismic responses at most locations in the basin with the exception of the locations near the basin edges, because the basin in this study is very shallow and wide.

The objective of this study is to present and verify a method for evaluating the fundamental period of a rockfill dam using artificially generated vibration from a blasting event. In this study, the artificial blasting vibration tests were carried out at the site adjacent to the existing Seongdeok Dam for the first time in Korea. The artificial vibrations were induced by 4 different types of blasting with the various depths of blasting boreholes and the various explosive charge weight. During the tests, the accelerations time histories were recorded at the crest of the dam. In this acceleration history, only free vibration decay part following the main vibration event was extracted and it was analyzed by frequency domain analysis using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). From the results of FFT, the fundamental period of the target dam was evaluated. It is found that the effect of different blasting types on the fundamental period of the target dam is negligible and the fundamental period of the target dam can be consistently obtained by blasting vibration tests. Furthermore, it is found that the period of the target dam calculated by the method using blasting vibration test is similar to that obtained by the method of previous researchers using the real earthquake records. Therefore, in case that the earthquake record is not available, the fundamental period of a rockfill dam can be reasonably evaluated if blasting vibration test is allowed at the site adjacent to the dam.

Superconducting Gravimeter(SG) was installed and has been successfully operated at MunGyung, Kyungsang province in Korea in March 2005. It was registered as the 21st observatory of the Global Geodynamics Project. Since SG can precisely measure the gravity variations below the 1mHz frequency band, it has the outstanding capability to sense and resolve many different periodic gravity components from each other. From the raw data collected between 18 March 2005 and 21 February 2006 diurnal and semi-diurnal tidal band's residual gravity components were analyzed. During this process, the instrumental noises, air pressure, and ground water corrections were carried out. Values of $-3.18nm/s^2/hPa\;and\;17nm/s^2/m$ were used respectively in the air pressure and groundwater corrections. Hartmann-Wenzel and Whar-Dehant Earth tide models were adopted to compute the residual gravity for Q1, O1, P1, K1, M2, N2, S2, K2 tidal bands. For the ocean loading correction, SCW80, FES952, and FES02 models were used and compared. As a result, FES02 ocean loading model has shown the best match for the data processing at MunGyung SG MunGyung SG gravity was compared with GRACE satellite gravity. The correlation coefficient between the two gravity after groundwater correction was 0.628, which is higher than before ground water correction. To evaluate sensitivity at MunGyung SG gravity statition, the gravity data measured during 2005 Indodesian earthquake was compared with STS-2 broad band seismometer data. The result clearly revealed that the SG could recorded the same period of earthquake with seismometer event and a few after-shock events those were detected by seismometer.
To enhance capability on discerning local and regional seismic phases, such as, Pn, Pg, Sn, Rg, etc, within the crust, 2-D numerical forward modeling will be applied to the data obtained from local seismic stations by simulating almost all waves including not only body wave but also surface wave generated without having to explicitly include them under consideration of Q factor. In this study, after getting rid of instrumental response by deconvolution, pseudo-spectral method instead of relying on typical numerical methods, such as, FEM(Finite Element Method) and FDM(Finite Difference Method), will be implemented for 2-D numerical forward modeling by considering velocities of P-wave and S-wave, density, and Q factors. Ultimately, the Power of reaching the enhanced capability on discerning local and regional seismic phases will make it easier for us to identify the seismic source, whether it is originated from man-made explosion or pure earthquake.
Natural magnetic fields are attenuated by electrically conductive water. For that reason, marine magnetotelluric surveys have collected data at long periods (1000-100 000 s). The mantle structure has been the main target of seafloor magnetotelluric measurements. To ascertain crustal structure, however, electromagnetic data at shorter periods are important, e.g. in investigations of megathrust earthquake zones, or in natural resource surveys. To investigate of the former, for example, electromagnetic data for periods of less than 1000 s are necessary. Because no suitable ocean bottom electromagnetometer (OBEM) has been available, we have developed a small OBEM and ocean bottom electrometer (OBE) system with a high sample rate, which has an arm-folding mechanism to facilitate assembly and recovering operations. For magnetic observation, we used a fluxgate sensor. Field observations were undertaken to evaluate the field performance of our instruments. All instruments were recovered and their electromagnetic data were obtained. Results of the first experiment show that our system functioned well throughout operations and observations. Results of other field experiments off Tottori support the claim that the electromagnetic data obtained using the new OBEM and OBE system are of sufficient quality for the survey target. These results suggest that this device removes all instrumental obstacles to measurement of electromagnetic fields on the seafloor.
