  • In this study, a part of high school science instructional materials is evaluated by Instructional Quality Profile(IQP) based on the Merrill's Component Display Theory(CDT). The CDT is based on the Gagne assumption of different conditions of learning for different outcomes. The IQP enables the user to check both the consistency and adequacy of existing cognitive instruction. The IQP can be used to predict student performance, and also to design and develop new insturctional materials. The instructional components are classified according to 5 task levels; An Use-Generalities on Newly Encountered Examples(UGeg), A Remember-Paraphrased -Generalities (RpG), A Remember-Verbatim-Generalities (RvG), A Remember-Paraphrased -Examples (Rpeg), A Remember-Verbatim-Examples(Rveg). And the instructional presentations are classified according to 4 levels: Explain Generalities(EG), Explain examples(Eeg), Inquiry Generalities(IG), Inquiry examples(Ieg). The instructional presentations are determined by instructional components of a related test item, and indexes of the presentation adequacy are calculated by the instructional presentations. The indexes of this study(0.17 - 0.44) were very low and it indicates that the instructional presentations were not adequate to the instructional components of the related text item.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate current practices in blended instruction. In particular, the study explored (1) the types of instructional delivery methods, technologies, and instructional components, (2) the reasons why faculty apply blend instruction, and (3) the advantages and challenges in delivering blended instruction. This study focused on the practices in the Universities that have the extensive doctoral research programs classified by the Carnegie Foundations. The survey was performed with the sample of faculty from 30 universities and the survey data included 133 faculties out of the total 1,000 randomly selected faculty members. Of the 133 responses, 111 (77.7%) participants had certain degree of experience, while 17 faculty (or instructors) (13.3%) did not have any practice with blended instruction. The most common instructional delivery format in the participating universities was blended instruction that added supplementary online instructional components in the class. Online Course Management Systems (CMS) and multimedia presentation tools were common technology for course delivery, and "discussion" was the most general instructional activity for the class. The participating faculty often preferred the blended format since it provides students and faculty with convenience, flexibility, active engagement, efficiency in using resource materials, and a feeling of connection between/among students and instructor. Benefits to the class were availability of more authentic experience and diverse curricular materials, and the instructional format that meets the needs of remediation and enhancement of students. This study addressed not only advantages and challenges of blended instruction, but also suggestions based on the comments by the participating faculty.

  • Recently, since the importance of the information communication ethics education for primary and secondary schools has being highlighted, researches and new instructional materials have been published actively. On the other hand, with the advance of e-learning, the various kinds of educational methods which consider the characteristics and the requirement of students are being developed. The educational method for Information Communication Ethics education is no exception. If the practical method for Information Communication Ethics education which considers students' requirements is developed, then a better educational effect can be acquired. In this paper, we decompose instructional design features into 4 components such as goal, model, contents, and media in order to design a better instruction for Information Communication Ethics education. And then, we analyze the relative importance of the instructional design components by using Conjoint method based on our questionnaire result. Finally, we propose an instructional design method for Information Communication Ethics as well as examine the differences among the instructional design components.

  • This study aimed to establish an observation protocol for mathematical modeling as an alternative way to examine instructional alignment to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The instructional alignment observation protocol (IAOP) for mathematical modeling was established through careful reviews on the fidelity of implementation (FOI) framework and prior studies on mathematical modeling. I shared the initial version of the IAOP including 15 items across the structural and instructional critical components as the FOI framework suggested. Thus, the IAOP covers what teachers should do and know for practices of mathematical modeling in classrooms and what teachers and students are expected to do. Based on the findings in this study, validity and reliability of the IAOP should be evaluated in follow-up studies.

  • Purpose: The 'learning cycle' proposed by Guilbert in 1981 has been accredited as an effective and useful model for curriculum design. Three components of learning cycle, learning objective, instructional method, and assessment are connected organically and form basic structure of curriculum. In this study, we intend to analyze how the learning cycle and its three components are applied to present medical curriculum and examine the points at issue of the learning cycle in medical education. Also, we try to identify the educational significance of the leaning cycle in medical education. Results: First, concerning the learning objective, it was identified that impractical and abstract expressions are major controversial points. Also, there is a need to make learning objectives covering entire medical curriculum. Second, because of various structural problems, it is hard to practice new and various instructional methods. Third, even though there is a growing need for medical curriculum to develop and utilize more various and detailed assessment and evaluation, it was revealed that only are standardized and traditional assessments mainly used. Conclusion: Synthetically, we have some suggestions as follows. First, it is necessary to specify and actualize the learning objectives. Also, instructional methods and assessments should be diversified. And finally, there is a need to build organic and delicate medical curriculum by applying the learning cycle to medical education more actively.

  • At a time when the textbooks publishing system is changing from government-administered to certified, it is necessary to analyze textbooks published in both systems. This study analyzed one government textbook and three certified textbooks on quadrilaterals based on the instructional components that must be taught in the area of 2-D shapes. As a result of the analysis, it was found that concept exploration was implemented appropriately, but classification activities were not presented in some lessons. In Defining Concepts, the definition of the concept was presented appropriately, but there were differences depending on the textbooks. In addition, it was found that there was little activity in talking about the components of shapes or shapes. In applying concepts, more diverse activities were presented in certified textbooks than in government textbooks. Knowing relationships are rarely presented in textbooks due to its influence on the curriculum. Based on the results of this analysis of quadrilaterals, this study provides textbook writers with implications on what to further consider is dealing with quadrilaterals.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of CMC-based English learning. In this study, CMC components were found to provide circumstances of facilitating interactions between student-student and student-student-teacher, which enabled students to accomplish language learning tasks. Findings of this study are as follows: First, CMC based language learning experience helps students have positive attitudes toward their English language learning. Second, student-student-instructor interaction group outperformed other groups in academic achievement and class activity participation. Third, cooperative learning groups more actively participated in the class activity than the individual learning group resulting in better academic performances. These findings supported the fact that cooperative learning with CMC components are useful in bringing more class participation and positive attitude that were believed to foster language learning than other groups in traditional language learning environments. This study suggests that the instructor needs to use instructional design strategies helpful to facilitate active interactions between instructors and students in order to achieve better effectiveness of English learning in a CMC based learning environment.
