  • Day ahead forecast is necessary for the electricity market to stabilize the electricity penetration. Numerical weather prediction is usually employed to produce the solar irradiance as well as electric power forecast for longer than 12 hours forecast horizon. Korea Meteorological Administration operates the UM-LDAPS model to produce the 36 hours forecast of hourly total irradiance 4 times a day. This study interpolates the hourly total irradiance into 15 minute instantaneous irradiance and then compare them with observed solar irradiance at four ground stations at 1 minute resolution. Numerical weather prediction model employed here was produced at 00 UTC or 18 UTC from January to December, 2018. To compare the statistical model for the forecast horizon less than 3 hours, smart persistent model is used as a reference model. Relative root mean square error of 15 minute instantaneous irradiance are averaged over all ground stations as being 18.4% and 19.6% initialized at 18 and 00 UTC, respectively. Numerical weather prediction is better than smart persistent model at 1 hour after simulation began.

  • Energy harvesting technique is an energy charging technique for communication device in energy-constrained environment. Recently, energy harvesting technique that harvests energy from wireless radio frequency signal is proposed. Representatively, there are time switching technique and power splitting technique. This paper proposes an optimal harvesting time allocation scheme in a wireless cognitive relay network when secondary user relay uses energy harvesting technique to transmit information. Secondary user relay receives information and energy simultaneously from the secondary user source's signal via time switching technique. We aim to maximize the instantaneous throughput by optimizing harvesting time of the secondary user relay. Simulation results show that using optimized harvesting time gets larger instantaneous throughput compared to using constant harvesting time.

  • Conical vortices on roof corners of a prismatic low-rise building have been investigated by using the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and model height was $5.3{\times}10^3$. Mean and instantaneous vector fields for velocity, vorticity, and turbulent kinetic energy were measured at two vertical planes and for two different flow angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. The measurements provided a clear view of the complex flow structures on roof corners such as a pair of counter rotating conical vortices, secondary vortices, and tertiary vortices. They also enabled accurate and easy measurement of the size of vortices. Additionally, we could easily locate the centers of the vortices from the ensemble averaged velocity fields. It was observed that the flow angle of a $30^{\circ}$ produces a higher level of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy in one of the pair of vortices than does the $45^{\circ}$ flow angle.

  • A stiffness in a dynamical system is numerically studied to investigate a sensitivity of a reactor to the delayed neutron spectra with the Doppler feedback. To test numerical procedure, we adopted a case of a reactivity accident in a point reactor model. We found that the stiffness is sensitive to a reactivity insertion rate and the delayed neutron spectra in the Doppler feedback phase. Our numerical results show that global reactor characteristics are not very sensitive to the delayed neutron spectra even though their instantaneous ones are sensitive. We present the time evolution of each precursor group explicitly.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of a fluidized bed latent heat storage system using encapsulated PCM was investigated. The cylindrical test section has the dimension of 50 mm I.D. and 40 cm in height. The phase change material(PCM) was the sodium acetate and was encapsulated by the multiple layers of PMMA and paraffin wax. The size of encapsulated PCM was $2{\sim}3mm$ and melting point was $58^{\circ}C$. The instantaneous heat storage and heat release rates were determined and the instantaneous heat transfer coefficient based on the fluidized bed volume was also determined. The effect of inlet temperature and velocity of heat transfer fluid on the heat transfer coefficient was also investigated.

  • This study was conducted to assess the hazards of gasoline in relevance to the changes in octane numbers, and gasoline's spontaneous ignition temperature and instantaneous ignition temperature were measured. Spontaneous ignition temperature of regular gasoline was $301^{\circ}C$ for sample quantity of $100{\sim}125{\mu}{\ell}$. Spontaneous ignition temperature of middle gasoline was $380^{\circ}C$ for sample quantity of $125{\mu}{\ell}$ and that of premium gasoline was $400^{\circ}C$. As gasoline's octane numbers increased, their spontaneous ignition temperatures increased, and their instantaneous ignition temperature were almost identically $499^{\circ}C$ for sample quantity of $125{\mu}{\ell}$. In addition, activation energies of regular gasoline, middle gasoline, and premium gasoline were 10.48 Kcal/mol, 16.89 Kcal/mol, and 24.55 Kcal/mol respectively.

  • Line-interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are good candidates for providing energy storage within a microgrid. In this paper, a control scheme for a line-interactive UPS system applied in a low-voltage microgrid is presented. It is based on the Q-w and P-E droop control to achieve a seamless transition between grid-connected and stand-alone operation modes. Moreover, a new model for designing the controllers is built in the dq-frame based on the instantaneous power definition. The new-built model takes into account the dynamic performance of the output impedance of the inverter in the dq-frame and can be evaluated in the time domain. Compared to the traditional model based on the instantaneous power definition, the new-built model is more accurate to describe the dynamic performance of the system. Simulation and experimental results obtained with a microgrid consisting of two 40-kW line-interactive UPS systems are given to validate the control strategy of the line-active UPS system and the accuracy of the new-built model.

  • Piston friction is one of the important but complicated sources of energy loss of a hydraulic axial piston machine. In this paper, two formulas are derived for estimating instantaneous piston friction force and average piston friction moment loss. The derived formula can be applicable for piston guides with or without bushing as well as for axial piston machines of motoring and pumping operations. Through the formula derivation, a typical curve shape of friction force found from several experimental measurements during one revolution of a machine is clearly explained in this paper that it is mainly due to the equivalent friction coefficient dependent on its angular position. Stribeck curve effect can easily be incorporated into the formula by replacing outer and inner friction coefficients at both edges of a piston with the coefficient given by Manring (1999) considering mixed/boundary lubrication effects. Novel feature of the derived formula is that it is represented only by physical dimensions of a machine, hence it allows to estimate the piston friction force and loss moment of a machine without hardworking experimental test.

  • This paper proposes a digital power control of the LLC resonant half-bridge inverter for high power microwave oven application. Conventional half-bridge inverter for driving a microwave oven uses a hardware-based power control method which varies the frequency according to the AC source voltage. In this case, it is difficult to control the output power according to the variation of the load status of magnetron. The proposed power control consists of an instantaneous current generator and a current controller. Instantaneous current generator makes an instantaneous current reference from power command using input voltage information. Current controller controls input current which has an information of status of magnetron. The proposed power control does not require any compensation algorithm for the change of the load status of the magnetron and change of input voltage. The validity of the proposed method for the control of the change of input voltage and frequency is verified by both simulation and experiment.

  • A Multi-Sectional 3D-PTV algorithm was developed to reduce the calculation time of the conventional GA-3D-PTV. The hardware system of the constructed 3D-PTV system consists of two high-speed cameras ($1,024\times1,018$ pixels, 60 fps), a metal halogen lamp (400W) and a host computer. The sphere(D=30mm) is suspended in a circulating water channel $(300mm\times300mm\times1,200m)$ and Reynolds number is 1,130. About 5,000 instantaneous three-dimensional velocity vectors have been obtained by the constructed 3D-PTV system. Turbulent properties such as turbulent intensity, Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy were obtained. An eigenvalue analysis was carried out using the obtained instantaneous 3D velocity vectors to get the topological relations of the asymptotically stable critical point. Two structured shells, inner shell and outer shell, were found in the sphere wake and their motions were clarified by the measured data.
