The hydrodynamic stability of the Karman boundary-layer flow due to a rotating disk has been numerically investigated for moving disturbance waves. The disturbed flow over a rotating disk can lead to transition at much lower Re than that of the well-known Type I instability mode. This early transition is due to the excitation of the Type II instability mode of moving disturbances. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning the two instability modes by solving new linear stability equations reformulated not only by considering whole convective terms but by correcting some errors in the previous stability equations. The reformulated stability equations are slightly different with the previous ones. However, the present neutral stability results are considerably different with the previously known ones. It is found that the flow is always stable for a disturbance whose dimensionless wave number k is greater than 0.75.

Experimental study on the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of a curved tube bundle in single phase downward cross flow is investigated for the design qualification and analysis input preparation of helical coiled steam generator tubing. A 6×9 normal square curved tube array with equal and different vertical/horizontal pitch-to-diameter ratio was under-tested up to 6 m/s in term of gap flow velocity to measure the critical velocity for FEI. The critical velocity for FEI was measured at the turning point from the vibration amplitude plot along the gap flow velocity. Our test results were compared with straight tube results and published data in the design guideline. The applicability of the current design guidelines to a curved tube bundle is also assessed. We found that introducing frequency difference in a curved tube array increases the critical velocity for fluidelastic instability.

This paper presents a theoretical approach of the instability criterion from stratified to nonstratified flow in horizontal pipe at cocurrent flow conditions. The new theoretical instability criterion for the stratified and nonstratified flow transition in horizontal pipe has been developed by hyperbolic equations in two-phase flow, Critical flow condition criterion and onset of slugging at cocurrent flow condition correspond to zero and imaginary characteristics which occur when the hyperbolicity of a stratified two-phase flow is broken, respectively. Through comparison between results predicted by the present theory and the Kukita et al.[1] experimental data of pipes, it is shown that they are in good agreement with data.
A new kind of differential flow induced chemical wave is introduced by theoretical calculation. A differential flow between the counter acting species of a dynamical activator-inhibitor system may destabilize its homogeneous reference state and cause the medium to self-organize into a pattern of travelling waves through the differential flow instability (DIFI). In a chemical system, also, the differential bulk flow may change the dynamics of the system, thus it has been refered to as the differential flow induced chemical instability (DIFICI). For DlFICI experiments, one directional flow has been commonly employed, resulting in periodic wave patterns generally. In this study, we considered two directional flow for the DIFICI wave by exchanging artificially the flow direction at some period.
Experiments are conducted to study bubble flow behavior during the instability of subcooled boiling under uniform and non-uniform transverse heating. The non-uniform heat distribution introduces nonuniform bubble generation and condensation rates on the heated surface, which is different from the uniform heating. These bubble generation and condensation characteristics introduce a non-uniform local pressure distribution in the transverse direction, which creates an extra non-uniform pressure on the flowing bubbles. Therefore, different bubble flow behavior can be observed between uniform and non-uniform heating conditions. In the uniform heating, bubble velocity fluctuations are low, and the bubbles travel straight along the axial direction. In the non-uniform heating, more fluctuation in the bubble velocity occurs at low mass flow rate and high subcooled inlet temperatures, and reverse flow is observed. Additionally, the bubbles show a zigzag trajectory when they pass through the channel, which indicates the existence of cross flow in the transverse direction.

Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effect of blood flow restriction exercise on ankle muscle strength and balance ability to achieve maximum efficiency with the same exercise intensity and time. Methods : Twenty-six adults are randomly assigned to experimental group (n=13) and comparison group (n=13). The experimental group performed ankle joint strength exercises with blood flow restriction applied while the comparison group performed ankle joint strength exercises without blood flow restriction applied three times a week for four weeks. The digital muscle measurement, Y-balance test, and Cumberland ankle instability tool were used to evaluate the subject's muscle strength, dynamic balance, and ankle instability index before and after the intervention. Results : In within-group comparison muscle strength, all the two groups showed significant improvements post intervention (p<.05). In between-group comparison, there was significant difference in the change of dorsiflexion, eversion strength pre and post intervention (p<.05). but plantarflexion was no significant difference between pre and post intervention in the group comparison (p>.05). In within-group comparison dynamic balance, all the two groups showed significant improvements post intervention (p<.05). In between-group comparison, there was no significant difference in the change of Y-balance score pre and post intervention (p>.05). In within-group comparison ankle instability index, all the two groups showed significant improvements post intervention (p<.05). In between-group comparison, there was no significant difference in the change of CAIT score pre and post intervention (p>.05). Conclusion : The results of this study show that ankle joint strength exercise improved the strength and balance ability of those complaining of chronic ankle instability, and ankle joint strength exercise applied with blood flow restriction was more effective in dorsiflexion and eversion strength exercise than ankle joint strength exercise without blood flow restriction.
Mode interactions at Unstable fluid interfaces induced by a shock wave (Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability) are studied both analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is based on a potential flow model with source singularities in incompressible fluids of infinite density ratio. The potential flow model shows that a single bubble has a decaying growth rates at late time and an asymptotic constant radius. Bubble interactions, bubbles of different radii propagates with different velocities and the leading bubbles grow in size at the expense of their neighboring bubbles, are predicted by the potential flow model. This phenomenon is validated by full numerical simulations of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in compressible fluids for initial multi-frequency perturbations on the unstable interface.

The transition from steady laminar to chaotic convection in a glass melting furnace specified by upper surface temperature distribution has been studied by the direct numerical analysis of the two and three-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal instability of convection roll may take place when modified Rayleigh number($Ra_m$) is larger than $9.71{\times}10^4$. It is shown that the basic flows in a glass melting furnace are steady laminar, unsteady periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic flow. The dimensionless time scale of unsteady period is about the viscous diffusion time, ${\tau}_d=H^2/{\nu}_0$. Through primary and secondary instability analyses the fundamental unsteady feature in a glass melting furnace is well defined as the unsteady periodic or weak chaotic flow.

Flow instability in the rocket turbo pump systems can be caused by various elements such as valve, orifice and venturi and etc. The formation of cavitation specially in the propellant feeding system can trigger the mass flow and pressure oscillation due to cyclic formation and depletion of cavitations. If the cryogenic propellant are used, which is very sensitive to temperature variation, the change of propellant properties due to thermodynamic effect should be accounted for in the flow analysis. This study focuses on the formation of cryogenic cavitation adopting MUSHY IDM model suggested by Shyy and coworkers. Also, the flow instability is investigated with developed numerical code in the downstream of orifice flow. To this end, three different orifices are selected and investigated by the numerical calculation.

In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.
