  • The fluid-elastic instability analysis of the U-tube bundle inside the steam generator is very important not only for detailed design stage of the SG but also for the change of operating condition of the nuclear powerplant. However the calculation procedure for the fluid-elastic instability was so complicated that the consolidated computer program has not been developed until now. In this study, the numerical calculation procedure and the computer program to obtain the stability ratio were developed. The thermal-hydraulic data in the region of secondary side of steam generator was obtained from executing the ATHOS3 code. The distribution of the fluid density can be calculated by using the void fraction, enthalpy, and operating pressure. The effective mass distribution along the U-tube was required to calculate natural frequency and dynamic mode shape using the ANSYS ver. 5.6 code. Finally, stability ratios for selected tubes of the CE type steam generator were computed. We considered the YGN 3.4 nuclear powerplant as the model plant, and stability ratios were investigated at the flow exit region of the U-tube. From our results, stability ratios at the central and the outside region of the tube bundle are much higher than those of other region.

  • Hard turning replaces grinding for finishing process with expectations of higher productivity and demanded surface quality. Especially for the surface roughness as surface quality demanded in finishing process of hard turning, know-how of machining characteristics of hardened materials by cutting force analysis should be accumulated in company with achievement of precision of elements and high stiffness design technology in hard turning. Considering chip formation mechanism of hardened materials, adequate cutting conditions are selected for machining experiments and cutting forces are measured according to cutting conditions. Increase of cutting forces especially thrust force and increase of dynamic instability could occur in hard turning. Analysis of dynamic characteristics of the cutting forces is executed to investigate relation between dynamic instability and surface roughness in hard turning. Investigation on effects of relative motion of machining system generated by vibration due to dynamic instability shows that ultimate surface roughness could be predicted considering relative motion of machining system with geometrical surface roughness.

  • Fluid velocity analysis on the instability of pipes reinforced by silica nanoparticles ($SiO_2$) is presented in this paper. Mori-Tanaka model is used for obtaining the effective materials properties of the nanocomposite structure considering agglomeration effects. The well known Navier-Stokes equation is used for obtaining the applied force of fluid to pipe. Based on the Reddy higher-order shear deformation theory, the motion equations are derived based on energy method and Hamilton's principal. The frequency and critical fluid velocity of structure are calculated using differential quadrature method (DQM) so that the effects of different parameters such as volume fractions of SiO2 nanoparticles, SiO2 nanoparticles agglomeration, boundary conditions and geometrical parameters of pipes are considered on the nonlinear vibration and instability of the pipe. Results indicate that increasing the volume fractions of SiO2 nanoparticles, the frequency and critical fluid velocity of the structure are increased. Furthermore, considering SiO2 nanoparticles agglomeration, decreases the frequency and critical fluid velocity of the pipe.

  • A simple model to analyze non-linear density-wave instability in a sodium-cooled helically coiled steam generator is developed. The model is formulated with three regions with moving boundaries. The homogeneous equilibrium flow model is used for the two-phase region and the shell-side energy conservation is also considered for the heat flux variation in each region. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of two-phase instability in a JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) 50MWt No.2 steam generator. The steady state results show that the proposed model accurately predicts the six cases of operating temperatures on the primary and secondary sides. The sizes of three regions, the secondary side pressure drop according to the flow rate, and the temperature variation in the vertical direction are also predicted well. The temporal variations of the inlet flow rate according to the throttling coefficient, the boiling and superheating boundaries and the pressure drop in the two-phase and superheating regions are obtained from the unsteady analysis.

  • A numerical feasibility study was conducted to investigate the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a steam generator with corrugated plates for a small modular reactor. Accordingly, a one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic analysis code was developed based on the existing state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic models and correlations for corrugated plate heat exchangers. Subsequently, the pressure loss, heat transfer, and instability characteristics of the steam generator with corrugated plates were investigated according to the chevron angle and mass flux. Additionally, the characteristics of rectangular and disk-type corrugated plate steam generators with equivalent heat transfer areas were analyzed. The steam generator with disk-type corrugated plates exhibited better performance in terms of pressure loss and heat transfer rate than the rectangular type. In addition, when the mass flux decreased from the onset of boiling points, reverse gradients of the total pressure change were observed in both types. Thus, it was confirmed that Ledinegg instability could occur in the steam generator with corrugated plates. However, it was dependent on the chevron angle, and the optimal chevron angle to minimize instability was 45° under the conditions of the present analysis.

  • To help the industry, outsourcing was found to be the most efficient method. An extensive literature analysis was done to assess the macroeconomic factors associated with outsourcing to supplement the anxious parties' decision-making process with evidence-based comprehensive tools. As a theoretical framework for evaluating these issues, transaction cost economies and resource-based perspective theories are investigated. Outsourcing is proven to be a result of energy crises and political instability. The advantages of outsourcing assist major industries in the economy. To discover the key drivers behind outsourcing, we used the vector autoregressive (VAR model) and step-wise regression techniques for the period 1992 to 2016. This research adds to the literature in that it not only explains the energy issue but also discusses the dilemma of political instability in the country in the context of outsourcing. The findings indicate that labor cost and export tendency have a positive impact on outsourcing strategy, which confirms the study's third and fourth hypotheses. Customs tax, inflation, and the unemployment rate, on the other hand, have a negative impact on textile outsourcing in Pakistan, according to the study's fifth, sixth, and seventh hypotheses.

  • The breakup phenomena of a vertical laminar jet issuing from capillary tubes in a quiescent ambient air are investigated using a forced vibration analysis of the surface wave. Using a linear approach to the transient jet velocity, an approximate solution fur the longitudinal motion of a vertical liquid jet is theoretically derived, thus performing an instability analysis by a vibration method. The damping term of this equation is nonlinear as it depends on dimensionless parameters, a Weber number, and an Ohnesorge number. The instability condition is determined based on whether the coefficient of the damping term is less than zero or not. Uniform drop formation is dependent on the vibration frequency fur the forced vibration case.

  • The aerodynamic stability of orthotropic tensioned membrane structures with rectangular plane is theoretically studied under the uniform ideal potential flow. The aerodynamic force acting on the membrane surface is determined by the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics. Then, based on the large amplitude theory and the D'Alembert's principle, the interaction governing equation of wind-structure is established. Under the circumstances of single mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction equation into a system of second order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the stability of the system characteristic equation, the critical divergence instability wind velocity is determined. Finally, from different parametric analysis, we can conclude that it has positive significance to consider the characteristics of orthotropic and large amplitude for preventing the instability destruction of structures.

  • The onset of longitudinal vortices in horizontal Blasius flow isothermally heated from below is studied analytically. The assumption that at the onset of thermal instability the thermal disturbances are confined within the thermal boundary layer is employed for the limiting case of large Prandtl number. Polynomial representations for the basic quantities obtained by the integral method of the boundary layer analysis have been used. Then the system of differential equations and boundary conditions for disturbance quantities is reformulated in a convenient form so that the solutions may be constructed as rapidly convergent power series. The critical buoyancy parameter G $r_{x}$ $^{*}$ /R $e^{*1.5}$ falls between 2 and 6, which is about one order of magnitude lower than the existing experimental values. It is also shown that the positions of the onset of instability can be closely predicted by the present theory.y.y.

  • Acoustic characteristics in an industrial gas-turbine combustor are numerically investigated by a linear acoustic analysis. Spatially non-homogeneous temperature field in the combustor is considered in the numerical calculation and the characteristics are analyzed in view of acoustic instability. Acoustic analyses are conducted in the combustors without and with acoustic resonator, which is one of the acoustic-damping devices or combustion stabilization devices. It has been reported that severe pressure fluctuation frequently occurs in the adopted combustor, and the measured signal of pressure oscillation is compared with the acoustic-pressure response from the numerical calculation. The numerical results are in good agreement with the measurement data. In this regard. the phenomenon of pressure fluctuation in the combustor could be caused by acoustic instability. From the numerical results for the combustor with present acoustic resonators installed, the acoustic effects of the resonators are analyzed in the viewpoints of both the frequency tuning and the damping capacity. It is found that the resonators with present specifications are not optimized and thus, the improved specification or design is required.
