In the present study, a finite element analysis of conjugate heat transfer problem inside a cavity with a heat-generating conducting body, where constant heat flux is generated, is conducted. A conduction heat transfer problem inside the solid body is automatically coupled with natural convection inside the cavity by using a finite element formulation. A finite element formulation based on SIMPLE type algorithm is adopted for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation. The proposed algorithm is verified by solving the benchmark problem of conjugate heat transfer inside a cavity having a centered body. Then a conjugate natural heat transfer problem inside a cavity having a heat-generating conducting body with constant heat flux is solved and the effect of the Rayleigh number on the heat transfer characteristics inside a cavity is investigated.
In this study the numerical analyses on cavity flow in supersonic flow field are conducted. According to the length-to-depth ratio of cavity, the shear layer is changed, consequently influencing on vortex structure inside the cavity. Especially in case the fluid flow outside cavity impinges inside the cavity, the oscillation of the cavity flow is identified. Another result is that though the cavity flow shows the unsteadiness, characteristics of cavity flow can be represented by pressure coefficients converged.
In the present study a numerical simulation is performed on a natural convection inside a square cavity with a vibrating wall. The study has been conducted varying the heat transfer rate, wall excitation frequency and also the orientation of the cavity. The temperature and velocities inside the cavity was observed and also, the heat transfer coefficients on the heating wall was seen. From the results, it can be seen that the temperature inside the cavity decreases when excited with the proper frequency and the heat transfer coefficient increased with cavity inclination angle, ${\theta}$. It is also found from the results that flow resonance is occurred near the inclination angle ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.

Numerical simulations were conducted in a rectangular scramjet combustor with a cavity and/or a step in order to investigate their performances for flame-holding. Flow structures and OH radical profiles in the cavity and the step were calculated. The calculated results showed that the cavity generated a larger recirculation zone than the step that had the same depth. Additionally, the combustor with a cavity could make a large low-velocity area than the combustor with a step. The cavity performance was determined by its depth and length. The cavities with too large or too short length did not work effectively, and a certain aspect ratio showed high performance for flame-holding. There was a minimal depth under which the cavity did not work as flame-holder. The fuel injections upstream the cavity and inside the cavity were also tested to investigate the effects on the cavity performance. The result showed that the fuel injection inside the cavity reduced reaction areas and residence time. Therefore, the upstream injection was preferable to the inside injection.

A computational analysis has been conducted to investigate the detailed flow structure inside a supersonic cavity. The free stream Mach number and Reynolds number are 1.83 and $6.02\times10^5$ respectively. In the present study, the depth and width of the cavity are changed to investigate the effect of the cavity dimensions. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the three-dimensional, steady, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. The present computation provides reasonable predictions of the cavity flow, compared with experimental results. The obtained results show that a shock wave is generated in front of the downstream edge of the cavity and the dominant frequencies of the pressure oscillations inside the cavity were obtained.
The penetration of an electro-magnetic wave through an aperture in a cylindrical structure with a center dielectric-rod is investgated. By using a standard mode matching procedure, the electrical and magnetic fields in a cavity are determined as a function of position inside the cavity and frequency of the incident field. For the given parameters, computed data are obtained and the results exhibited in form of amplitude curves of the nor malized field and energy densities of functions of position and frequency. Depending on the increase of the relative dielectric constant of center dielectric-rod, the resonance frequecies of the cavity vary as the cavity size decrease. The stored electro-magnetic energy varies very rapidly as a function of position inside the cavity and of the source frequency. Its peak value can be two orders of magnitude greater than the incident energy density. The frequencies where the peaks occur can be identified approximately as the resonance frequencies of the cavity.
This letter presents a measurement methodology of the complex permittivity of liquid using a partially open cavity in narrow band. The partially open cavity (POC) can measure dielectric small changes caused by the temperature variation of the liquid inside the cavity as well. Using the resonance frequency and unloaded quality factor of the proposed POC, the complex permittivity is evaluated. The apertures on the walls of the cavity are designed to circulate the liquid inside to outside of the POC and located at the corner area of the cavity to minimize the disturbance of field distribution at the dominant mode. The results measured by the proposed POC were compared with those by the conventional open-ended probe and Cole-Cole equation. The POC showed better performance in measuring small dielectric constant changes than the open-ended probe.
Pressure pulsation Inside the discharge and suction cavity of rotary and scroll compressor are often a major source of objectionable noise and vibration. The key factor of these noise and vibration is due to the cavity resonance. It is not only necessary to understanding the characteristics of pulsation in order to reduce the excitation force of gas to the cavity but also to verifying the phenomena of cavity resonance. For the purpose of these understandings, measurement and simulation of cavity resonance can lead to a better understandings how they occur and be very important to identify the ways to reduce the noise efficiently. In this paper, modeling of the cavity(internal acoustics inside the shell) is discussed and simulated using FEM. Results from the simulation are compared with those measurement in experiments. In describing of cavity mode by experiments, it is very important to specify the exact conditions under which they are measured. Finally, this paper shows the one example of reduced cavity resonance in the compressor.

When fluid at high speed flows over an open cavity, large acoustic pressure fields inside the cavity are produced by fluid/structure interactions at the downstream end of the cavity. The inter-coach spacing is one of the most important sources of the aero-acoustic noise of a high-speed train. This noise can usually be heard as low frequency structure-borne noise inside the train. In this study experiments were performed in order to investigate the effects of mud-flap length on the aeroacoustic noise generation inside high-speed trains. Results of the measurement confirmed that the characteristics of the noise generated from the inter-coach spacing are strongly dependent on the size of the gap. Also investigated are the characteristics of the turbulent flow after the inter-coach spacing and consequent generation of the aeroacoustic noise inside the cabin.

Vibrations transmitted through rolling tire are major sources of road noise in vehicle interior on the range of $0{\sim}500Hz$. Among various road noises, tire cavity noise makes many problems recently. Vehicle NVH performance has improved better and road surfaces are made well. But tires are changed to high inches and low series. So tire cavity noise becomes more serious. In this paper, a designed material for reducing tire cavity noise is proposed. On the surface inside tire, this material is attached at one position using double-tape. This material disperses the pressure variations inside the tire. So a spindle forces at wheel center are reduced. And tire cavity noise at vehicle interior is also reduced. Durability is verified by tire only test and vehicle test. Noise performance also compared with peak levels after attaching this material.
