Photopolymer-based Surface-normal Input/Output Volume Holographic Grating Coupler for 1550-nm Optical Wavelength

  • A surface-normal input/output volume holographic grating coupler (VHGC) operating at 1550nm wavelength region by using a $10{\mu}m$-thick DuPont photopolymer film is designed and fabricated. The angular and wavelength responses of the input/output VHGC are investigated in order to validate applicability of this device in integrated optics and optical communications. The effect of incident-beam position on the output reflectance to determine optimum condition for input coupling is also presented. The fabricated input/output VHGC exhibited an angular selectivity of ${\sim}0.027^{\circ}$, a wavelength selectivity of ~0.8 nm, and an output peak reflectance of 34.13%.

  • This paper describes the development of the sensor interface and driver program for a point of care (POC) device. The proposed pac device comprises an ARM9 embedded processor and eight-channel sensor input to measure various bio-signals. It features a user-friendly interface using a full-color TFT-LCD and touch-screen, and a bluetooth wireless communication module. The proposed device is based on the system on a programmable chip (SOPC). We use Altera's Excalibur device, which has an ARM9 and FPGA area on a chip, as a test bed for the development of interface hardware and driver software.

  • DVD(Digital Versatile Disk) is the data storage media devised to make high storage density and high data input/output possible. Therefore higher rotational speed and better accuracy in optical pick-up are required compared with the existing optical storage device. These operational functional requirements are concerned with abilities of optical storage device. Especially, High rotational speed is deeply concerned with the noise and vibration of optical storage device, is important problem in development of optical storage device so much. This paper propose a new concept ROM media of optical storage device named as Cylindrical ROM media, and evaluate this by means of Axiomatic approach and empirical data.

Sensitivity Enhancement of a Vertical-Type CMOS Hall Device for a Magnetic Sensor

  • This study presents a vertical-type CMOS Hall device with improved sensitivity to detect a 3D magnetic field in various types of sensors or communication devices. To improve sensitivity, trenches are implanted next to the current input terminal, so that the Hall current becomes maximum. The effect of the dimension and location of trenches on sensitivity is simulated in the COMSOL simulator. A vertical-type Hall device with a width of $16{\mu}m$ and a height of $2{\mu}m$ is optimized for maximum sensitivity. The simulation result shows that it has a 23% better result than a conventional vertical-type CMOS Hall device without a trench.

  • This paper presents the new linear notion device so called \"inch-werm\" which gets large displacement by incrementally summing small displacements of PZT actuators. Dynamic stiffness of inch-worm is generally low compared to its driving condition due to the requirement of inch-worm like small size and light weight. This low stiffness may degenerate the positional precision of inch-worm. An inch-worm is realized using three PZT actuators, a monolithic moving device and a guide way frame. Finite element method and experimental approach are used to analyse the static and dynamic motion of the designed inch-worm. Command reference input is shaped to reduce the residual vibration of inch-worm. The practical feasibility of inch-worm is also examined by running tests.ing tests.

Touchpad for Force and Location Sensing

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication model of a touchpad based on a contact-resistance-type force sensor. The touchpad works as a touch input device, which can sense contact location and contact force simultaneously. The touchpad is 40 mm wide and 40 mm long. The touchpad is fabricated by using a simple screen printing technique. The contact location is evaluated by the calibration setup, which has a load cell and three-axis stages. The location error is approximately 4 mm with respect to x-axis and y-axis directions. The force response of the fabricated touchpad is obtained at three points by loading and unloading of the probe. The touchpad can detect loads from 0 N to 2 N. The touchpad shows a hysteresis error rate of about 11% and uniformity error rate of about 3%.

  • This paper proposes a bi-directional current switch with snubber regeneration using Power MOSFETs and this paper proposes to use a loss-less snubber with switching device to perform soft-switching. It results in not only decreasing switching loss in the device drastically, but also improving input ac current waveform distortion. The computer simulation results show that the input current waveform and show the requirements necessary for the elimination of the 3rd harmonic component. We also show the procedure to design the parameters of the converter.

  • Skilled typists can type characters or wrds without looking at keyboard, relying on the finger´s relative position. If the relative positions of the fingers can be identified, a virtual keyboard may be accomplished by applying the concept of "DataGlove" or "FingerRing". The virtual keyboard may be efficient as a new mobile input device supporting QWERTY keyboard layout. For the purpose of investigating skilled typing pattern, in this paper the touch-positions of the fingers are measured with a touchscreen while four skilled typists type a long sentence. From these measurements it can be observed that the groups of touch-positions are classified into alphabet characters.   • A delivery ship is used to handle the cargo with the crane to/from the ships. The ship is inclined in the direction of a cargo which is hung on a crane. In this case, a arc shaped rail should be in the equilibrium state to get good anti-rolling performance. In this study, a device and control algorithm are developed to take accurate and quick equilibrium of the rail. The device is composed of a hinged immovable support, screw jack and damper. And the control system is based on I-PD control law to consider of control input saturation and overshoot. The controller is composed of integral controller of feedforward path and proportional-derivative controller of feedback path. The parameters of controller is designed to follow the reference signal and to remove overshoot. The simulation results show that the desirable control performance is achieved.
