To abate the problem of odor from restaurants, a hybrid adsorbent consisting of organic and inorganic materials was developed and evaluated using acetaldehyde as a model compound was deveioped and evaluated. Powders of activated carbon, bentonite, and calcium hydroxide were mixed and calcinated to form adsorbent structure. The surface area of the hybrid adsorbent was smaller than that of high-quality activated carbon, but its microscopic image showed that contours and pores were developed on its surface. To determine its adsorption capacity, both batch isotherm and continuous flow column experiments were performed, and these results were compared with those using commercially available activated carbon. The isotherm tests showed that the hybrid adsorbent had a capacity 40 times higher than that of the activated carbon. In addition, the column experiments revealed that breakthrough time of the hybrid adsorbent was 2.5 times longer than that of the activated carbon. These experimental results were fitted to numerical simulations by using a homogeneous surface diffusion model (HSDM); the model estimated that the hybrid adsorbent might be able to remove acetaldehyde at a concentration of 40 ppm for a 5-month period. Since various odor compounds are commonly emitted as a mixture when meat is barbecued, it is necessary to conduct a series of experiments and HSDM simulations under various conditions to obtain design parameters for a full-scale device using the hybrid adsorbent.
This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility and usefulness of a commercial synthetic adsorbent, Diaion HP 20, for the isolation of proanthocyanidins (PAs) from hot water extract (HWE) prepared from Pinus radiata bark. Most ultraviolet (UV) absorbing materials in HWE were adsorbed onto Diaion HP 20 and easily recovered by simple ethanol (EtOH) washing. More than 50% of the UV absorbing materials were adsorbed within 20 minutes, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 3 h. The recovered materials from Diaion HP 20 were mostly composed of PAs, but some monomeric flavonoids such as taxifolin and unidentified hydrophobic materials were also adsorbed. The impurities such as carbohydrates and inorganic materials contained in HWE were mostly removed by Diaion HP 20. The adsorption ability of the UV absorbing materials onto Diaion HP 20 was almost the same as the first cycle even after 14 times of repeating cycles of adsorption and desorption. The radical scavenging ability of the recovered materials from the adsorbent was slightly higher than that of the pure PAs prepared by Sephadex LH 20 from the same HWE.
This study focuses on mechanical property enhancement and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reduction characteristic of environmentally-friendly waterborne coatings. We synthesized a series of organic-inorganic hybrid waterborne polyurethanes by using poly(tetramethylene glycol) 2000, polycarbonate diol 2000, isophorone diisocyanate, dimethylolpropionic acid and titanium dioxide. The study on the effects of the R ratio([NCO]/[OH]) and inorganic contents on environmentally-friendly waterborne coatings showed that the R ratio with more than 1.5 is appropriate due to arrangement of hardsegments. The applied $TiO_2$ on films reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Ammonia, $NH_3$, is a key chemical widely used in chemical industries and a toxic pollutant that impacts human health. Thus, there is a need for the development of effective adsorbents with high uptake capacities to adsorb $NH_3$. An adsorbent with a high surface area and a small pore size is generally preferred in order to have a high capacity for the removal of $NH_3$. The use inorganic nanoporous materials as gas adsorbents has increased substantially and emerged as an alternative to zeolite and activated carbon. Herein, mesoporous alumina (MA) was prepared and used as an $NH_3$ adsorbent. MA showed good pore properties such as a uniform pore size and interlinked pore system, when compared to commercial adsorbents (activated carbon, zeolite, and silica powder). MA has free hydroxyl groups, serving as useful adsorption sites for $NH_3$. In an adsorption isotherm test, MA exhibited 4.7-6.5 times higher uptake capacities for $NH_3$ than commercial adsorbents. Although the larger surface areas of adsorbents are important features of ideal adsorbents, a regular and interlinked adsorbent pore system was found to be a more crucial factor to adsorb $NH_3$.
In this study, an effective method to prepare granular binderless ZSM-5 which is as efficient p-xylene separatory adsorbent was explored. Colloidal silica sol 30 wt% solution as an inorganic binder and microcrystalline cellulose as an organic additive were added to ZSM-5 powder ($SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ = 50). Adsorbent with enough strength (0.721 kgf), high crystallinity (94.6%) and high BET specific surface area ($379.2m^2$/g) was obtained by calcination, binderless treatment, ${NH_4}^+$ ion exchange, and activation after spherical granulation process. A batch type adsorption experiment was proceeded with solutions comprising 3 xylene isomers by 1 : 1 : 1 weight ratio to evaluate adsorption characteristics of prepared absorbent. As a result, the obtained binderless ZSM-5 granule showed a higher selective adsorption performance for para-xylene than that of commercial adsorbent.

Organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous materials were prepared by co-condensation of organosilanes with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) or 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE). Their removal capability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air was evaluated and compared with that of inorganic hydrophilic mesoporous material, SBA-15 that was prepared with TEOS only. It was found that the increased hydrophobicity of mesoporous materials due to the presence of organic group, could enhance the VOCs removal by adsorption in the air. An organic-inorganic hybrid material prepared by the co-condensation of BTSE/phenyl triethoxysilane (90/10 by weight) was a typical example of superior adsorbent. It was also observed that these organic-inorganic hybrid materials can be utilized as absorbents for the removal of oil dispersed in water.
This study was conducted the adsorption experiment way of organic wastewater (BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P) by changing the carbonization temperature and the size of adsorbent to examine the adsorption capacity of Korean traditional charcoal which has similar characteristics to activated carbon of organic pollutants. Also, it was performed the basic experiment for pH and inorganic materials. As a result of observing Korean traditional charcoal with has the greatest inorganic contents which are the important factor of chemical adsorption. As the carbonization temperature was better high temperature charcoal than law temperature charcoal to adsorption capacity of pollutant and as the particle was minute (D size : $3.35mm{\sim}2.0mm$), it was most effective. The result of adsorption experiment of organic wastewater show that the elimination ratio of pollutants by bamboo high temperature charcoal was found as BOD(82.1%), COD(91.7%), TOC(52.4%), T-N(66.6%), T-P(83.2%) and it has most excellent adsorption capacity of organic pollutants.

The present paper deals with gaseous carbon dioxide separation by a commercial adsorbent: X-type zeolite. Experimental work was carried out at an ambient condition focusing on how well meeting to the national guideline. A few types of reactor and material were examined, and practical capability was found in a granular bed type reactor with the flow of 2.5 CMM. An optimum design of reactor and adsorbent could provide the required concentration, less than 2500 ppm, for the continuous operation up to 10 hours. More work including automatic regeneration is now underworking.
This work is to compare the experiment results by a continuous fixed-bed adsorption of water vapor, acetone vapor, and toluene vapor on zeolite 13X (SAU) and silica-alumina (SAK). SAU and SAK have very different pore structure but similar composition as inorganic adsorbent. The relationship between the equilibrium adsorption capacity and specific pore size range were studied. Adsorption of water vapor was more suitable on SAU than SAK because SAU has relatively more developed pores around $5\;\AA$ than SAK in the pore range of $10\sim100\;\AA$. Adsorption of acetone vapor was more suitable on SAK than SAU because SAK has relatively more developed pores around $5\sim10\;\AA$ than SAK in the pore range of less than $10\;\AA$. Adsorption of toluene vapor was more suitable on SAK than SAU because SAK has relatively more developed pores in the pore range of $10\sim100\;\AA$ than SAK. Adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was closely related to the surface area generated in the specific pore size region. But it was difficult to distinguish the relationships between adsorption capacity and micro area, and the external surface area of adsorbent.

The ceramic paper, which could adsorb VOC's effectively, was made by paper-making method with zeolite and ceramic fiber as main constituents. By this experiment, the optimal composition of the slurry for the ceramic paper formation was established. SEM observation showed that zeolite powder was uniformly dispersed and adhered to the paper by applying inorganic binder. The two type zeolites content in the ceramic paper was 26 wt$\%$ and its BET surface area was 131 $m^{2}$/g. The thickness and the basis weight of the ceramic paper were 0.2 mm and 130 g/$m^{2}$ respectively, and it had sufficient tensile characteristics to withstand tensile stress without tearing during corrugation. The total inorganic content of the paper was 78 wt$ \% $ and organic content was 22 wt$\%$. The equilibrium loading amount of toluene at the toluene at the toluene partial pressure of 0.2 mmHg was 3.2 wt$\%$.
