Mould level control system for continuous casting process involves stick-slip friction in the sliding gate , time-delay, non-linearity, and certain uncertainties such as friction force variations between molten steel and the inner wall of mould. In this paper, sliding mode control technique was used to solve these complex control problem. The controller is then designed and implemented onto the continuous casting process. Testing result shows that sliding mode controller can decrease the fluctuating magnitude of the mould level and is superior to the existing PID controller.
In the study, the inner flow characteristics were analyzed by modifying the inner design parameter of the vane-type vacuum pump. The effect of pressure generated by the inner flow of pump on the rotor and vane was analyzed. The design parameter was analyzed using the angle variation of tilting and rotation of the vane. MRF was used for the analysis conducted using a virtual condition where the rotor and vane are rotated. The pressure gained from the load of the rotor and vane in the flow analysis is used for the structure analysis. Based on the results, the effect of variable vane design was revealed in structural strength. The effect of centrifugal and friction force generated during pump operation on structural strength was also analyzed.
An experimental investigation was made to study the performance characteristics of evaporator having different fin configurations and tube inner grooves. Three different types of fin such as super slitted fin, slitted fin, plain fin, and two types of tube such as inner grooved tube, and bare tube, are tested varying the air velocity, evaporation temperature and superheat of refrigerant. Results show that in the range of air side Reynolds number $3{\times}10^3\;-\;1.5{\times}10^4$ evaporator with super slitted fin and inner grooved tube shows best performance. It is 80% higher in overall heat transfer coefficient and 2.6 times higher in pressure loss compared to that with plain fin inner grooved tube. Friction factor is found to be almost independent of evaporating temperature and degree of superheat, while Colburn j factor varies with evaporating temperature.
The main objective of this study is to examine the sensitivity of calibration curves of FEA of ring compression test to frictional shear factor. Ring compression test has been investigated by measuring dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen and they include the changes in internal diameter at the middle and top section of the specimen, outer diameter at the middle and top section, surface expansion at the top surface, respectively. Initial ring geometries employed in analysis maintain a fixed ratio of 6 : 3 : 2, i.e. outer diameter : inner diameter : thickness of the ring specimen, which is generally known as 'standard' specimen. A rigid plastic material for different work-hardening characteristics has been modeled for simulations using rigid-plastic finite element code. Analyses have been performed within a definite range of friction as well as over whole range of friction to show different sensitivities to the interfacial friction for different ranges of friction. The results of investigation in this study have been summarized in terms of a dimensionless gradient. It has been known from the results that the dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen show different linearity and sensitivity to the frictional condition on the contact surface.
A friction hinge system which moves without power was designed and developed using the principle of friction force, which is caused by interference between the inner diameter of a silicon cap and the outer diameter of a cylindrical roller bearing with one-way rotation in a counterclockwise direction. The system was applied to the lid of buffet ware, which moved up by external force and moved down by gravitational force. However, design conditions which included a rotation angle of the hinge of more than 80 degrees and a closing time of more than 20 seconds were required when the lid of the buffet ware closed due to gravitational force. The design safety of the friction hinge body connected to the lid of the buffet ware from the hinge system was checked on the basis of structural, fatigue and thermal analyses. The material of the shaft, cap and flange among the hinge elements was changed to polyethylene from steel to reduce the weight of the friction hinge system. An injection molding simulation was performed and injection molds of the shaft, cap and flange were created. The weight of the hinge system was decreased from 805g to 219g.
Frictional heat greatly influences the friction behaviors during clutch engagement. Therefore, the engagement of a wet or dry clutch is frequently not under control by the frictional heat. In a wet clutch, the frictional temperature also specially needs to be controlled, and in many cases, the clutch material is selected to prevent a temperature rise from the friction between friction pad and separator. However, only the selection of the clutch material cannot ensure sufficient control of the temperature rise by the friction. The groove pattern on a friction pad is designed for more flow rates of transmission fluid between the contact gap of clutch pad and separator for the cooling effect. In this work, grove patterns are designed for more flow rates out of the contact gap between friction pad and separator plate. Selected groove design shows the improvement flow rates of transmission fluid through both inner and outer radius, where most of the transmission fluid flows through the outer radius when the clutch is engaged due to the centrifugal force in conventional wet clutch groove. Several comparisons of the amounts of frictional heat generated on clutch pads are made in order to verify the decrease of the temperature rise according to the flow rates along the groove patterns.
This work studies the flow behaviors in the gap between the friction pad and separator in wet-clutch systems. The fluid volume of the lubricant is modeled using the entire system of wet-clutch pack of a dual clutch transmission that has larger outer radius of odd gear shifts and smaller inner radius of even gear shifts. Flow behaviors in the gap of the clutch pad are computed using the gear shift modes that consider the real relative velocities between the friction pad and separator. Flow behaviors in the gap of the disengaged clutch pad are mainly investigated for the wet-clutch system, whereas the engaged clutch pad is modeled with no fluid rate through the contacting surfaces. The developed hydrodynamic fluid pressures and velocity fields in the clutch pad gap are computed to obtain the relevant information for managing flow rates in wet-clutch packs under dual operating conditions during gear shifts. These hydrodynamic pressures and velocity fields are compared on the basis of each gear level and gap location, which is necessary to determine the effects of groove patterns on the friction pad. Shear stresses in the gap locations are also computed on the basis of the gear level for the inner and outer clutch pads. The computed results are compared and used for the design of cooling capacity against frictional heat generation in wet-clutch pack systems.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the surface composition, roughness, and relative friction of metal clips from various ceramic self-ligating brackets. Methods: Six kinds of brackets were examined. The control group (mC) consisted of interactive metal self-ligating brackets while the experimental group (CC, EC, MA, QK, and WA) consisted of interactive ceramic self-ligating brackets. Atomic force microscopy-lateral force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to analyze the surface of each bracket clip. Results: All the clips in the experimental groups were coated with rhodium except for the QK clip. The results showed that the QK clip had the lowest average roughness on the outer surface, followed by the MA, EC, WA, and CC clips. However, the CC clip had the lowest average roughness on the inner surface, followed by the QK, WA, MA, and EC clips. The QK clip also had the lowest relative friction on the outer surface, followed by the MA, EC, CC, and WA clips. Likewise, the CC clip had the lowest relative friction on the inner surface, followed by the QK, WA, MA, and EC clips. Conclusions: The surface roughness and relative friction of the rhodium-coated clips were generally higher than those of the uncoated clips.
Magneto-rheological elastomer (MR elastomer) is a smart material, because it has mechanical properties that change under a magnetic field. An MR elastomer changes its stiffness characteristics when the inner particles (iron particles) align along the direction of a magnetic field. There has been much research to make use of this characteristic to control vibration issues in various mechanical systems, such as for mounting systems in the automotive field, home appliances, etc. Furthermore, the friction and wear properties of MR elastomer have been studied, as these relate to the durability of the material needed to meet engineering requirements. Rolling friction (or rolling resistance) is one of these friction properties, but has not yet been studied in the context of MR elastomers. In this study, an MR elastomer is fabricated in the shape of a hollow cylinder to evaluate the rolling friction characteristic under a magnetic field. The test apparatus is setup and a strain gauge is used to calculate the rolling resistance under test conditions. Permanent magnets are used to supply the magnetic field during tests. The load and rolling speed conditions are also considered for the tests. The test results show that rolling friction characteristic has a different trend under different magnetic field, load, and rolling speed conditions. It is assumed that the stiffness change of an MR elastomer under a magnetic field has an effect on the rolling friction characteristic of the MR elastomer. For the future work, the rolling friction characteristics of MR elastomers will be controlled by adjusting the strength of the magnetic field using electromagnets.
