This paper presents numerical investigation of multi-phase flow in solid rocket motor nozzle and effect of multi-phases on the performance prediction of the Solid Rocket Motor. Aluminized propellants are frequently used in solid rocket motors to increase specific impulse. An Eulerian-Lagrangian description has been used to analyze the motion of the micrometer sized and discrete phase that consist of the larger particulates present in the Solid Rocket Motor. Uniform particles diameters and Rosin-Rammler diameter distribution method has been used for the simulation of different burning of aluminum droplets generating aluminum oxide smokes. Roe-FDS scheme has been used to simulate the effects of the multi-phase flow. The results obtained show the sensitivity of this distribution to the nozzle flow dynamics, primarily at the nozzle inlet and exit. The analysis also provides effect of two phases on performance prediction of Solid Rocket Motor.

Evaporative humidification using a humidifying element is widely used for humidification of a building or a data center. The performance of a humidifying element is commonly expressed as humidification efficiency, which is used independent of air temperature, humidity and water temperature. In this study, a series of tests were conducted at two air conditions (data center and commercial building) using two different humidifying elements (cellulose/PET and Glasdek) changing the frontal air velocity and water temperature. Results showed that the measured humidification efficiency was dependent on the air condition and water temperature. In fact, even dehumidification occurred at the inlet of the humidifying element at the air condition of commercial building. The reason was due to the inlet water temperature, which was lower than the dew point air temperature. As the difference between the inlet water and the dew point air temperature increased, the humidification efficiency decreased. This suggest that proper thermal model should account for the inlet region, where the amount of moisture transfer may be different from the other part of the humidification element. A simple analysis on the thermal performance of the cellulose/PET humidification element showed that the Sherwood number was adequately predicted, whereas the friction factor was ovepredicted, probably due to the simplification of the channel geometry and the neglection of the water film on the element surface.

This study reports a numerical analysis of the internal flow characteristics of the integrated urea-SCR muffler system with the various geometries of the multi-perforated tube which is set up between the muffler inlet and in front of SCR catalysts. The multi-perforated tube is generally used to disperse uniformly the urea-water solution spray and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, resulting in the increased $NO_x$ reduction and decreased ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the velocity distributions in front of the SCR catalyst, which is ultimately quantified as the uniformity index, were investigated for the optimal muffler system design. The steady flow model was applied by using a general-purpose commercial software package. The air at the room temperature was used as a working fluid, instead of the exhaust gas and urea-water solution spray mixture. From the analysis results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected to the formation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst.

The effect of an increase in the temperature of inlet air on the performance of a membrane humidifier for a PEMFC (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) vehicle was investigated both experimentally and numerically. A shell-and-tube type gas-to-gas humidifier with Nafion membrane was tested. The experimental result showed that water transfer varies nonlinearly with the temperature elevation. Numerical analysis based on detailed modeling was also conducted in simplified geometry of a single tube to explain this nonlinear behavior. The simulation revealed that the local water flux varies nonlinearly and dramatically along the tube. The analysis was based on the inverse relationship between the increase in temperature and decrease in relative humidity, both of which seriously affect the water conductivity of the membrane.
In order to quantify the flow distribution characteristics of APR+ reactor, a test was performed on a test facility, ACOP ($\underline{A}$PR+ $\underline{C}$ore Flow & $\underline{P}$ressure Test Facility), having a length scale of 1/5 referring to the prototype plant. The major parameters are core inlet flow and outlet pressure distribution and sectional pressure drops along the major flow path inside reactor vessel. To preserve the flow characteristics of prototype plant, the test facility was designed based on a preservation of major flow path geometry. An Euler number is considered as primary dimensionless parameter, which is conserved with a 1/40.9 of Reynolds number scaling ratio. ACOP simplifies each fuel assembly into a hydraulic simulator having the same axial flow resistance and lateral cross flow characteristics. In order to supply boundary condition to estimate thermal margins of the reactor, the distribution of inlet core flow and core exit pressure were measured in each of 257 fuel assembly simulators. In total, 584 points of static pressure and differential pressures were measured with a limited number of differential pressure transmitters by developing a sequential operation system of valves. In the current study, reactor flow characteristics under the balanced four-cold leg flow conditions at each of the cold legs were quantified, which is a part of the test matrix composing the APR+ flow distribution test program. The final identification of the reactor flow distribution was obtained by ensemble averaging 15 independent test data. The details of the design of the test facility, experiment, and data analysis are included in the current paper.

A series of 1/5 scale-down reactor flow distribution tests had been conducted to determine the hydraulic characteristics of an APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus), which were used as the input data for an open core thermal margin analysis code. In this study, to examine the applicability of computational fluid dynamics with the porous model to the analysis of APR+ internal flow, simulations were conducted using the commercial multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX V.14. It was concluded that the porous domain approach for some reactor internal structures could adequately predict the flow characteristics inside a reactor in a qualitative manner. If sufficient computational resources are available, the predicted core inlet flow distribution is expected to be more accurate by considering the real geometry of the internal structures, especially upstream of the core inlet.

Effects of chamfered perforated plate on pressure loss characteristics were studied with CFD analysis. Both inlet chamfer angle and outlet chamfer angle were considered. Perforated patterns were compared by pressure loss coefficient in certain porosity and Reynolds number. Reynolds number effects were studied for several chamfer angles and plate thickness. As the inlet chamfer angle was increased, the pressure loss coefficient was decreased until the certain angle and reversed to increase. In the outlet chamfered shape cases, the pressure loss coefficient was increased with chamfer angle. Effects of pattern shapes and Reynolds number on pressure loss characteristics were negligible with different chamfer angles and thickness studied in this paper.

Experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade to investigate local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud and the effect of inlet Reynolds number on the tip and shroud heat transfer. Detailed mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip and the shroud were obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$of the blade chord. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ to investigate the effect of Reynolds number. Flow reattachment after the recirculation near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Shroud surface has very intricate heat/mass transfer distributions due to complex flow patterns such as acceleration, relaminarization, transition to turbulent flow and tip leakage vortex. Heat/mass transfer coefficient on the blade tip is about 1.7 times as high as that on the shroud or blade surface. Overall averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.65}\;and\;Re_{c}^{0.71},$ respectively.

In this study, the effect of hole geometry of the cooling system on the flow and temperature field was numerically calculated. The finite volume method was employed to discretize the governing equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used and also the predicted results were compared with the experimental data to validate numerical modeling. The predicted results showed good agreement in all cases. To analyze the effect of the discharge coefficient for slots of different length to width, the inlet chamfering and radiusing holes were considered. The discharge coefficient was increased with increment of the chamfering ratio, radiusing ratio and slot length to width and also the effect of radiusing showed better result than chamfering in all cases. In order to analyze the difference between the predicted results with plenum region and without plenum region, the velocity profiles of jet exit region for a various flow conditions were calculated. The normal velocity components of jet exit showed big difference for the low slot length to width and high blowing rate cases. To analyze the flow phenomena injected from a row of inclined holes in a real turbine blade, three dimensional flow and temperature distribution of the region including plenum, hole and cross stream with flow conditions were numerically calculated. The results have shown three-dimensional flow characteristics, such as the development of counter rotating vortices, jetting effect and low momentum region within the hole in addition to counter rotating vortex structure in the cross stream.
