This article reports a bi-directional interlanguage study designed to investigate the initial state of L2 acquisition with regard to English and Korean wh-questions. Based on the UG system in line with the minimalist theory, it was hypothesized that the L2 initial state is characterized by the most economical form of syntax in which no overt wh-movement to Spec-CP is assumed. Results of the early interlanguage study showed that 1) L1 Korean learners of L2 English predominantly produced wh-questions with the fronted wh-word, but without productive wh-movement to the Spec-CP position; and 2) L1 English learners of L2 Korean overwhelmingly produced wh-questions with the wh-word remaining in-situ. These results were interpreted as supporting the minimalist account of the L2 initial grammar in that no overt syntactic wh-movement were adopted in early interlanguages of both English and Korean regardless of the learner's L1.

Adaptive behaviors are one of ubiquitous features in evolutionary dynamics of populations, and certain adaptive behaviors can be witnessed by individuals' movements which are generally affected by local environments. In this paper, by revisiting the previous work, we investigate the sensitivity of species coexistence in the system of cyclic competition where species movement can be affected by local environments. By measuring the extinction probability through Monte-Carlo simulations, we find the relativistic effect of weights of local fitness and exchange rate for adaptive movement on species biodiversity which promotes species coexistence as the relativistic effect is intensified. In addition, by means of basins of initial conditions, we also found that adaptive movement can also affect species biodiversity with respect to the choice of initial conditions. The strong adaptive movement can eventually lead the coexistence as a globally stable state in the spatially extended system regardless of mobility.
Tailor-welded blanks are used for forming of automobile structural skin components. The main objective of this study is to achieve weight and cost reduction in manufacturing of components. For successful application of tailor-welded blanks, design of initial welded blanks and prediction of the welding line movement are critical. The utilization of the backward tracing scheme of the finite element method shows to be desirable in design of initial welded blanks for net-shape production and in prediction of the welding line movement. First the design of the initial blank in forming of welded thick sheet with isotropy is tried, and it appears successful in obtaining a net-shape stamping product. Based on the first trial approach, the backward tracing scheme is applied to anisotropic tailored blanks. The welding line movement is also discussed.
Orthodontic tooth movement is closely related to the stress on the periodontal tissue. In this research the finite element method was used to observe the stress distribution and to find the best condition for effective tooth movement in the case of unilateral molar expansion. The author constructed the model of lower dental arch of average Korean adult and used $.032'\times.032'\times60mm$ TMA wire. The wire was deflected in the horizontal and vertical direction to give the 16 conditions. The following results were obtained ; 1. When the moment and force were controlled properly the movement of anchor tooth was minimized and the movement of moving tooth was maximized. 2. As the initial horizontal deflection increased the buccal displacement of both teeth was also increased. As the initial horizontal deflection increased the lingual movement of anchor tooth and the buccal movement of moving tooth increased. 3. When the initial horizontal and vertical deflection rate was 1.5 the effective movement of moving tooth was observed with minimal displacement of anchor tooth.

To reduce the effort in preprocessing of finite element analysis, we developed two types of three-dimensional finite element models based on the standard teeth model. Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element models by considering the measuring factors such as angulation, crown inclination, rotation and translations. The finite element analysis for the wire activation with a T-loop arch wire was carried out. Mechanical behavior on the movement and the initial stress for the malocclusion finite element model was shown to agree with the objectives of the actual treatment. Finite element models and procedures of analysis developed in this study would be suitably utilized for the design of initial shape of the wire and determination of activation displacements.
Traditional descriptions of water movement in soils and of calculations of infiltration rates neglect the air movement and its compressibility. The movement of two fluids in the bounded layered porous medium is treated analytically and computer simulations are conducted for given boundary conditions and initial saturation profiles. The movement of a given saturation across the interface between the different soil layers is theoretically developed by considering the conservation of mass. It is shown that the existence of the interface affects the infiltration rate when the average total velocity is greater than zero. The transition from one layer to another layer cause a change in the capillary drive and consequently influences the infiltration rate.

Experiments on the eye movement behavior were performed using Vidicon Eye Camera. Factorial design ( $3{\times}3$) was used to evaluate the validity of the eye movement as a performance measure in vigilance task. Eye movement data were recorded in video tapes, then the data were converted to digital signals, which were reduced to quantitative fixation and saccadic movement data by a microcomputer. To compare with existing vigilance performance measures, response time and the number of false alarms were also recorded. The results showed that the saccadic movement is a good measure of the performance in vigilance task : 1. Both the response time and the saccadic movement increased significantly during the initial two time blocks. 2. High correlations were shown between the response time and the saccadic movement. 3. The locational uncertainty affects the saccadic movement, the number of fixations, the response time but doesn't affect the duration of eye fixations.
This study compared the effects of the initial head position (i.e., a HHP versus a relaxed head position) of subjects with and without a FHP on the thickness of the deep and superficial neck flexor muscles during CCF. The study recruited 6 subjects with a FHP and 10 subjects without a FHP. The subjects performed CCF in two different head positions: a HHP, with the head aligned so that the forehead and chin formed a horizontal line, and a relaxed head position (RHP), with the head aligned in a self-selected comfortable position. During the CCF exercise, the thickness of the longus colli (LCo) and the thickness of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) were recorded using ultrasonography. The thickness of each muscle was measured by Image J software. The statistical analysis was performed with a two-way mixed-model analysis of variance. The thickness of the SCM differed significantly (p<.05) between the subjects with and without FHP. According to a post $h^{\circ}C$ independent t-test, the change in thickness of the SCM increased significantly during CCF in the subjects with FHP while adopting a HHP compared to that in the subjects without FHP. The change in thickness of the SCM was not significantly different between the two positions in subjects without FHP, and there was no significant change in thickness of the LCo muscle during the CCF exercise according to the initial position in both subjects with and without FHP. The results suggest that CCF should be performed in RHP to minimize contraction of the SCM in subjects with a FHP.
For the purpose of evaluating the response of the periodontal tissue in relation to the experimental tooth movement, orthodontic force was applied to 15 female rats. The animals were investigated histopathologically and histochemically by several staining methods. Findings were as follows: 1. The application of 60gm on the rat's molar caused mesial tipping movement and undermining resorption. 2. One day after the insertion of the appliance, the osteoblast was increased in activity but not in number. 3. The osteoclastic activity was decreased as soon as removing the appliance. 4. With the P.A.S. staining, osteoclasts Stained mildly in the initial stage and stained more intensely in the last stage. Osteoclasts revealed negative reaction in the initial stage and stained mildly in the last stage. 5. Slides stained with toluidine blue revealed no conclusive variations between osteoblasts and osteoclasts.
