  • A two-dimensional circular cylinder freely falling in a channel has been simulated by using immersed boundary - lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) in order to analyze the characteristics of motion originated by the interaction between the fluid flow and the cylinder. The wide range of the solid/fluid density ratio has been considered to identify the effect of the solid/fluid density ratio on the motion characteristics such as the falling time, the transverse force and the trajectory in the streamwise and transverse directions. In addition, the effect of the gap between the cylinder and the wall on the motion of a two-dimensional freely falling circular cylinder has been revealed by taking into account a various range of the gap size. As the cylinder is close to the wall at the initial dropping position, vortex shedding in the wake occurs early since the shear flow formed in the spacing between the cylinder and the wall drives flow instabilities from the initial stage of freely falling. In order to consider the characteristics of transverse motion of the cylinder in the initial stage of freely falling, quantitative information about the cylinder motion variables such as the transverse force, trajectory and settling time has been investigate.

  • Cables are the main load-bearing members of prestressed structure and other tensegrity structures. Based on the static equilibrium principle, a new cable force identification method considering cable flexural rigidity is proposed. Its computational formula is derived and the strategy to solve its implicit formula is introduced as well. In order to improve the reliability and practicality of this method, the influence of the cable flexural rigidity on cable force identification accuracy is also investigated. Through cable force identification experiments, the relationships among certain parameters including jacking force, jacking displacement, initial cable force, and sectional area (flexural rigidity) are studied. The results show that the cable force calculated by the proposed method considering flexural rigidity is in good agreement with the finite element results and experimental results. The proposed method with high computational accuracy and resolution efficiency can avoid the influences of the boundary condition and the length of the cable on calculation accuracy and is proven to be conveniently applied to cable force identification in practice.

  • This paper presents a new numerical method by using Singular Value Decomposition force method for form-finding of tensegrity structures with constraints. In order to maintain the tensegrity structures stable, state of self-equilibrium stress should be introduced. The existing force method has some advantages about form-finding of tensegrity structures. However, this method has complex formulation. In force density method, dummy members are required for form -finding of tensegrity structures with constraints. Therefore this study proposes new force method using Singular value decomposition. The proposed method is both having easy basic consept and simple computation than existing force method. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness in searching initial single integral feasible self-stress mode for tensegrity structures with constraints.

  • This paper describes an initial pole position estimation method of a magnetic pole sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) with an incremental encoder, The accurate initial pole position is estimated by using an efficient numerical method of Secant Method, which finds either of two zero torque/force positions and then the correct d-axis. It can be simply applicable to both rotary and linear PMSM because it only requires the tuned current controller and the relative position information. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed method with respect to highly accurate pole position estimation under the moderate moving distance and convergence time.

  • In this study, we present the optimization of a head slider using kriging method in order to reduce lift-off force during unloading process with satisfying reliable flying attitude in steady state. To perform an optimization process efficiently, a simplified lift-off force model, which is a function of air bearing suction force and flying attitudes, is created by kriging method. The EMDIOS, which is the process integration and design optimization software developed by iDOT, is used to automatically wrap the analysis with the optimization and efficiently implements the repetitive works between analyzer and optimizer. An optimization problem is formulated to reduce the lift-off force during unloading process while satisfying the flying attitude in reliable range over the entire recording band and reducing the probability of contact between slider and disk. The simulation result shows that the amplitude of lift-off force of optimized L/UL slider is reduced about 62%, compared with that of initial slider model. It is demonstrated by the dynamics L/UL simulation that the optimum slider incorporated with the suspension is not only smoothly loaded onto disk but also properly unloaded onto the ramp.

  • In order to determine the One-Drop One-Pulse(ODOP) condition of the pulsed gas metal arc(GMA) welding, the drop detaching phenomenon during the peak time is investigated using the force-displacement model. The drop detaching criterion is established based on the displacement of the pendant drop, and the forces exerted on the drop are calculated using the Modified Force Balance Model(MFBM). The effects of wire melting on the drop size and force are included in the force-displacement model. While the peak current has most significant effects on the drop detaching time, the initial drop mass prior to the peak time also influences drop transfer. The calculated results show good agreements with the experimental data, which implies that the ODOP condition can be predicted using the force-displacement method.

  • This paper presents simple schemes used to estimate the initial rotor position and the d- and q-axis inductances for effective Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) operation in a wind-power system using an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine). An IPMSM essentially requires an exact coordinate transformation and accurate inductance values to use a reluctance torque caused by the saliency characteristic. In the proposed high-frequency voltage testing method, there is no voltage drop caused by the resistance and the electromotive force. The initial rotor position and the inductance can be measured through an analysis of the stator current without turning the rotor. The experimental results are presented in order to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • The number of fabrication shop for spherical type LNG tank is proportional to that of the tank radius to be constructed. Due to limitation of facility investment including building sites, it is practically difficult to fabricate various size tanks with perfectly spherical shape in the yards. The efficient method to be capable of increasing cargo tank volume is to extend vertically the conventional spherical type LNG tank by inserting a cylindrical shell structure. The main purpose of this study is to derive related equations on forces generated on spherical type LNG tank with central cylindrical part under various static loadings in order to establish the simplified analysis method for the initial estimate. In this study, equations on circumferential and meridional force have been derived and verified by relations with the reaction forces per unit length of equator.

  • The machine locking system is an important device for the safety of persons using the machine. In this study, a locking system using electromagnetic fields is proposed to decrease the defects and the cost for repairing and maintenance of the existing locking system using structural mechanism. We analyze the electromagnetic locking system and calculate the generated force considering direction by the finite element method. Also, we set up two design domains for the topology optimization; first domain is optimized to reduce the volume and the other is optimized to maximize the generated force keeping the volume, especially. The optimal design is obtained by integration of the two optimized results. An improved design is obtained by the optimal topology and it is confirmed by comparison with the initial locking system.

  • This paper deals with the estimation method on the initial pole position of a z-axis permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) without magnetic pole sensors such as Hall sensors. The proposed method takes account of the z-axis conditions such as the gravitational force and also the load conditions. The algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is to estimate the initial q-axis approximately by monitoring the movements at predefined different test q-axes. The second step is to estimate the real q-axis as accurately as possible based on the results at three different test q-axes. Experimental results on the z-axis PMLSM show good estimation characteristics of the proposed method.
