  • Thermal characterization of individual pixels in microbolometer infrared image sensors is needed for optimal design and improved performance. In this work, we used thermoreflectance microscopy on uncooled microbolometer image sensors to investigate the thermal characteristics of individual pixels. Two types of microbolometer image sensors with a shared-anchor structure were fabricated and thermally characterized at various biases and vacuum levels by measuring the temperature distribution on the surface of the microbolometers. The results show that thermoreflectance microscopy can be a useful thermal characterization tool for microbolometer image sensors.

  • A stable reference voltage generator is necessary to the infrared image signal readout circuit(ROIC) to improve noise characteristics in comparison with signals originated from infrared devices, that is, to gain good images. In this study, bandgap reference circuit operating at cryogenic temperature of 77K for Infrared image ROIC(readout integrated circuit) was propose. Most of bandgap reference circuits which are presented so far operate at room temperature, and they are not suitable for infrared image ROIC operating at liquid nitrogen temperature, 77K. To design bandgap reference circuit operating at cryogenic temperature, the parameter characteristics of used devices as temperature change are seen, and then bandgap reference circuit is proposed with considering such characteristics. It demonstrates practical use possibility through taking measurements and estimations.

  • For the economic management of photovoltaic power plants, it is necessary to regularly monitor the panels within the plants to detect malfunctions. Thermal infrared image cameras are generally used for monitoring, since malfunctioning panels emit higher temperatures compared to those that are functioning. Recently, technologies that observe photovoltaic arrays by mounting thermal infrared cameras on UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are being developed for the efficient monitoring of large-scale photovoltaic power plants. However, the technologies developed until now have had the shortcomings of having to analyze the images manually to detect malfunctioning panels, which is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose an automatic photovoltaic panel area extraction algorithm for thermal infrared images acquired via a UAV. In the thermal infrared images, panel boundaries are presented as obvious linear features, and the panels are regularly arranged. Therefore, we exaggerate the linear features with a vertical and horizontal filtering algorithm, and apply a modified hierarchical histogram clustering method to extract candidates of panel boundaries. Among the candidates, initial panel areas are extracted by exclusion editing with the results of the photovoltaic array area detection. In this step, thresholding and image morphological algorithms are applied. Finally, panel areas are refined with the geometry of the surrounding panels. The accuracy of the results is evaluated quantitatively by manually digitized data, and a mean completeness of 95.0%, a mean correctness of 96.9%, and mean quality of 92.1 percent are obtained with the proposed algorithm.

  • The rosette-scan seeker, mounted on the infrared guided missile, is a device that tracks the target It can acquire the 2D image of the target by scanning a space about target in rosette pattern with a single detector Since the detected image is changed according to the position of the object in the field of view and the number of the object is not fixed, the unsupervised methods are employed in clustering it The conventional ISODATA method clusters the objects by using the distance between the seed points and pixels So, the clustering result varies in accordance with the shape of the object or the values of the merging and splitting parameters In this paper, we propose an Array Linkage Clustering Algorithm (ALCA) as a new clustering algorithm improving the conventional method The ALCA has no need for the initial seed points and the merging and splitting parameters since it clusters the object using the connectivity of the array number of the memory stored the pixel Therefore, the ALCA can cluster the object regardless of its shape With the clustering results using the conventional method and the proposed one, we confirm that our method is better than the conventional one in terms of the clustering performance We simulate the rosette scanning infrared seeker (RSIS) using the proposed ALCA as an infrared counter countermeasure The simulation results show that the RSIS using our method is better than the conventional one in terms of the tracking performance.

  • In this paper, we realize the panoramic infrared warning system to detect the small threaten object and propose the infrared image enhancement method to improve the warning ability of this system. This system composes of the sense head unit, the signal processing unit, and so on. In the proposed system, the sense head unit acquires the panoramic IR image with 360 degree field of view(FOV) by rotating the thermal sensor. The signal processing unit divides panoramic image into four sub-images with 90 degree FOV and computes the adaptive plateau value by using statistical characteristics of each subimage. Then the histogram equalization is performed for each subimage by using the adaptive plateau value. We realize the signal Processing unit by using the DSP and FPGA to perform the proposed method in real time. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better discrimination and lower false alarm rate than the conventional methods in this warning system.

  • Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to monitor brain activation by measuring changes in the concentration of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin (Hb) by their different spectra in the near-infrared range. Because NIRS is a noninvasive, highly flexible and portable device, it is very suitable to study brain activation when a human repeatedly performs a manipulative task, and possibly provides useful information to construct human adaptive mechatronics (HAM). There is some evidence that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a major role in working memory and it is proposed that the use of working memory decreases as a human develops manipulative skills. In the present study, we investigated the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of the brain in Brodmann's areas 9 and 46 in drawing tasks to examine whether NIRS can measure the changes of DLPFC activation as a human develops manipulative skills. Subjects performed a mirror image drawing task and a square drawing task by ones' left hands. In the mirror image task the subject drew following a star shape based on a mirror image of it, but square drawing did not involve mirror image and was estimated to be simpler. The changes of the concentration of oxy-Hb was higher in the mirror image drawing than the square drawing in most subjects. The changes of oxy-Hb decreased as the subject repeated the drawing task in most subjects. In conclusion, The activation of DLPFC measured by NIRS can reflect the brain activity in the development of manipulative skills.

  • To solve the problem of poor noise suppression capability and frequent loss of edge contour and detailed information in current fusion methods, an infrared and visible light image fusion method based on variational multiscale decomposition is proposed. Firstly, the fused images are separately processed through variational multiscale decomposition to obtain texture components and structural components. The method of guided filter is used to carry out the fusion of the texture components of the fused image. In the structural component fusion, a method is proposed to measure the fused weights with phase consistency, sharpness, and brightness comprehensive information. Finally, the texture components of the two images are fused. The structure components are added to obtain the final fused image. The experimental results show that the proposed method displays very good noise robustness, and it also helps realize better fusion quality.
