AKARI OBSERVATIONS OF THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM

  • AKARI has 4 imaging bands in the far-infrared (FIR) and 9 imaging bands that cover the near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared (MIR) contiguously. The FIR bands probe the thermal emission from sub-micron dust grains, while the MIR bands observe emission from stochastically-heated very small grains and the unidentified infrared (UIR) band emissions from carbonaceous materials that contain aromatic and aliphatic bonds. The multi-band characteristics of the AKARI instruments are quite efficient to study the spectral energy distribution of the interstellar medium, which always shows multi-component nature, as well as its variations in the various environments. AKARI also has spectroscopic capabilities. In particular, one of the onboard instruments, Infrared Camera (IRC), can obtain a continuous spectrum from 2.5 to $13{\mu}m$ with the same slit. This allows us to make a comparative study of the UIR bands in the diffuse emission from the 3.3 to $11.3{\mu}m$ for the first time. The IRC explores high-sensitivity spectroscopy in the NIR, which enables the study of interstellar ices and the UIR band emission at $3.3-3.5{\mu}m$ in various objects. Particularly, the UIR bands in this spectral range contain unique information on the aromatic and aliphatic bonds in the band carriers. This presentation reviews the results of AKARI observations of the interstellar medium with an emphasis on the observations of the NIR spectroscopy.

  • Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is one of the representative non-destructive and eco-friendly analysis methods used for rapid analysis of various ingredients in the food industry. To develop analysis model with NIRS, Chemometrics are applied after pre-treatment of spectrum. Many studies have been reviewed on the analysis of general and functional components for agricultural and livestock products. In the case of livestock products, some studies have been conducted for on-line analysis. This study investigated results on various samples and component applying near-infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the results according to sample condition were compared. It was confirmed that NIRS is applied to various fields in the food industry.

A catalog of infrared supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud

  • We present a catalog of infrared supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have searched the Spitzer archival data for infrared counterparts to all 45 known SNRs in the LMC, and identified 21 which is 47% of the known SNRs. Seven of them are newly detected: SNR 0450-70.9, SNR in N4, N103B, DEM L241, DEM L249, DEM L316A, and DEM L316B. All newly discovered SNRs show emission at several IRAC 3.4, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron bands and/or MIPS 24 and 70 micron bands. Most SNRs show shell structures. We derive infrared fluxes of these newly detected SNRs. The catalog contains general information of each SNR such as location, age, and SN type together with AKARI and/or Spitzer fluxes. For the entire SNR sample, we examine their infrared colors and the possible correlation of the infrared fluxes with the fluxes at other wavelengths. For the newly detected SNRs except the SNR in N4, we also performed follow-up imaging observations of [Fe II] 1.644 micron line using IRIS2 mounted on the Anglo Australian Telescope. Three out of six SNRs show [Fe II] emission corresponding to their infrared shells. [Fe II] knots are also detected in N103B which show good spatial correlation to infrared emission seen at Spitzer images as well as knotty $H{\alpha}$ emission. We investigate the characteristics and origin of the infrared emission in individual SNRs, and discuss the environmental and evolutionary effects.

AKARI NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY FOR COMETARY VOLATILES

  • We performed a spectroscopic survey for cometary volatiles with the Infrared Camera onboard the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. The observations were carried out in the near-infrared wavelength range in the period from 2008 June to 2010 January. In this paper, we summarize the observations and results of the AKARI survey for the mixing ratios of major volatiles in comets. We derived the $2.5-5{\mu}m$ spectra of 18 comets including both Oort cloud comets and Jupiter-family comets. Prominent emission bands in the observed spectra are the fundamental vibrational bands of water ($H_2O$) at $2.7{\mu}m$ and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) at $4.3{\mu}m$. The fundamental vibrational band of carbon monoxide (CO) at $4.7{\mu}m$ and the broad emission feature probably related to C-H bearing molecules can also be recognized around the $3.4-3.5{\mu}m$ region in some comets. We detect $CO_2$ in 17 out of 18 comets, and derived gas production rate ratios of $CO_2$ with respect to $H_2O$ in 17 comets. We detect a reliable CO emission band only in three of the comets. Our data set provides the largest homogeneous database of $CO_2/H_2O$ ratios in comets obtained so far.

PROTO-MODEL OF AN INFRARED WIDE-FIELD OFF-AXIS TELESCOPE

  • We develop a proto-model of an off-axis reflective telescope for infrared wide-field observations based on the design of Schwarzschild-Chang type telescope. With only two mirrors, this design achieves an entrance pupil diameter of 50 mm and an effective focal length of 100 mm. We can apply this design to a mid-infrared telescope with a field of view of $8^{\circ}{\times}8^{\circ}$. In spite of the substantial advantages of off-axis telescopes in the infrared compared to refractive or on-axis reflective telescopes, it is known to be difficult to align the mirrors in off-axis systems because of their asymmetric structures. Off-axis mirrors of our telescope are manufactured at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI). We analyze the fabricated mirror surfaces by fitting polynomial functions to the measured data. We accomplish alignment of this two-mirror off-axis system using a ray tracing method. A simple imaging test is performed to compare a pinhole image with a simulated prediction.

  • This paper is a foundation work in developing a software for generating infrared images from a scene with various objects. The spectral radiance received by a remote sensor is consisted of the self-emitted, reflected and scattered components. In general, the self-emitted component is the most important part for generating Infrared signatures from the object. In this paper, the infrared image generation considering various surface temperature and optical surface property of a flat plate is demonstrated in MWIR($3{\sim}5{\mu}m$) and LWIR($8{\sim}12{\mu}m$) regions for different spatial resolutions of the images. Resulting spectral radiance values in the MWIR($3{\sim}5{\mu}m$) and LWIR($8{\sim}12{\mu}m$) regions arrived at the infrared sensor are compared numerically and graphically by recognizing that they are strongly dependent on the surface conditions such as the surface temperature and the surface emissivity. And these infrared images are also shown to be strongly dependent on the resolutions of the infrared imaging devices as well. This study reveals that the surface conditions are more dependent on the radiance level from the surface while the resolution of the imaging device is more responsible for identifying the shape of object.

ADVANTAGES OF THE AKARI FIR ALL-SKY MAPS

  • We present the AKARI far-infrared (FIR) all-sky maps and describe its characteristics, calibration accuracy and scientific capabilities. The AKARI FIR survey has covered 97% of the whole sky in four photometric bands, which cover continuously 50-180 micron with band central wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 microns. The data have been publicly released in 2014 (Doi et al., 2015) with improved data quality that have been achieved since the last internal data release (Doi et al., 2012). The accuracy of the absolute intensity is ${\leq}10%$ for the brighter regions. Quantitative analysis of the relative intensity accuracy and its dependence upon spatial scan numbers has been carried out. The data for the first time reveal the whole sky distribution of interstellar matter with arcminute-scale spatial resolutions at the peak of dust continuum emission, enabling us to investigate large-scale distribution of interstellar medium in great detail. The filamentary structure covering the whole sky is well traced by the all-sky maps. We describe advantages of the AKARI FIR all-sky maps for the study of interstellar matter comparing to other observational data.

SIZE AND ALBEDO PROPERTIES OF MAIN BELT ASTEROIDS BASED ON THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF INFRARED ASTEROID SURVEYS: IRAS, AKARI, AND WISE

  • Presently, the number of known asteroids is more than 710,000. Knowledge of size and albedo is essential in many aspects of asteroid research, such as the chemical composition and mineralogy, the size-frequency distribution of dynamical families, and the relationship between small bodies in the outer solar system or comets. Recently, based on the infrared all-sky survey data obtained by IRAS, AKARI, and WISE, the large asteroid catalogs containing size and albedo data have been constructed. In this paper, we discuss the compositional distribution in the main belt regions based on the compiled data on size, albedo, and separately obtained taxonomic type information.

DATA REDUCTION OF AKARI/IRC SPECTROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS

  • AKARI performed about 10,000 spectroscopic observations with the Infrared Camera (IRC) during its mission phase. These IRC observations provide unique spectroscopic data at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths for studies of the next few decades because of its high sensitivity and unique wavelength coverage. In this paper, we present the current status of the activity for improving the IRC spectroscopic data reduction process, including the toolkit and related data packages, and also discuss the goal of this project.
