  • This study measured various types of joint book reading behaviors of parents of preschool children using two different text genres. Participants were the parents of 35 preschool children 4 years of age. Parent-child dyads were videotaped during periods of joint book reading using two different types of text(informational and narrative). Results indicated differences in maternal behavior between the two types of texts. The informational book elicited a higher amount of print concept behaviors and more content behavior while reading the narrative book. Among content-related behaviors parents used more labeling during the informational genre. On the other hand, parents' use of description and judgment were significantly higher in the narrative genre compared with the informational genre.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a writing program and the type of picture book used on the early stages of writing and creative writing in young children. The different stages of writing amongst young children was divided into an early stage of writing for pre-schoolers and creative writing for spontaneous expression and problem solving. The subjects comprised 36 children aged 5 from a child daycare center in Seoul. Among the KISE-BAAT and Creative tests, the writing test and creative writing test were used. The early stage of writing and creative writing were both analyzed by means of both ANCOVA and T-test. Firstly, in the subscale of the early stage of writing(ability to mark, use vocabulary, create sentences and text construction), the early stage writing of the experiment group scored higher than that of the comparison group. Secondly, in terms of the type of picture books, the group using informational picture books had greater effects on the early stage of writing than the group using narrative picture books. Thirdly, the writing program itself had a positive effect on creative writing. In the subscale of creative writing (fluency, flexibility, novelty), the group using informational picture books made greater progress in fluency and novelty than the group using narrative picture books.

The results showed that 'discourse among children through books' follows steps in a process. The steps include: Deciding a topic that children should search for, choosing an appropriate book to resolve children's curiosities, spending some time for discoursing among children by using pictures in the book, and sharing what they had understood. Through this process, a pre-school teacher met with children who were full of abilities, ideas and motivation to explore with a little assistance. The pre-school teacher was able to overcome preconceived ideas that informational books could be difficult for children, and experienced various lessons, while the children led their own learning. It represents that the activity, 'discourse among children through books' can be a children centered inquiry learning teaching strategy, because the informational books ensure that the children gain knowledge and are actively in cogitation.

  • This study aims to explore the characteristics of translated picture books in South Korea and their cultural meanings over a five-decade period. This time can broadly be divided into three periods, being the Settlement Period (pre-1990), the Flourishing Years (1991-2000) and Globalization (post-2001). During the Settlement Period, picture books in South Korea were derived mainly from Japan and America and tended to be informational in nature or based on folk tales. These were translated into Korean to meet the public's curiosity for foreign cultures or for scientific information. The Flourishing Years were characterised by the availability of picture books on a wide variety on themes and forms from all over the world. In this period, the translation of books into Korean focused on a literal rendition of the meanings and sounds of names from the original text. There was also a proliferation of audiotapes, videos and TV programs based on famous picture books. In the current period of Globalization, Korean publishers, who have built confidence through studying foreign picture books over time, have increased efforts to produce their own picture books and export them abroad.
